Elisa with the activated Starfish at the end of the incident.
I can't believe the flapping of a butterfly by the Black Sea led to such a huge storm. But everything must eventually come to an end, and it is time to wake from that nightmare.

The Paldiski Submarine Base Incident (帕尔迪斯基潜艇基地事件)[2] is a battle that occurred between Griffin & Kryuger (G&K), Statesec, the KCCO, Sangvis Ferri (SF) and Paradeus at the Paradeus-occupied submarine base of Paldiski, in Estonia, in 2064.[Note 1] Havier Witkin called it the denouement of the Butterfly Incident.[1] The objective of the KCCO and SF was to reach and activate the Starfish installation at the bottom of the base, while G&K and Statesec's objectives were to prevent the activation. Paradeus nominally defended their base, but were in fact expecting a relics key candidate to reach maturity by coming in contact with the Starfish.

G&K and Statesec prevailed over Sangvis Ferri and the KCCO despite devastating losses (over 97.5% of two to three hundred G&K T-Dolls), but the Starfish was activated long enough that Paradeus also achieved their objective when AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 triggered a Reverse Collapse. The Paldiski Incident effectively marked the end of Sangvis Ferri as a faction with the disappearance of their leader Elisa, but the incident was ultimately a mere setback in the overall plans of the KCCO to destabilize the world and also advanced Paradeus' goals by accelerating the resurrection of Lunasia.

The incident is told in Polarized Light and Chapter 13 of Girls' Frontline. The conclusion of this narrative arc marked a 4-years long shift away from the AR Team and Squad 404 as protagonists and towards Angelia and Task Force DEFY.

Prelude: Chase for the Pike Node and Tallinn[edit]

AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 confronts Isomer Black near Tallinn.

Following the Great Retreat in early 2064, Sangvis Ferri's HQ was razed by the KCCO and their forces beat a planned retreat.[3] During the battle, Elisa was stopped a fourth time in her efforts to absorb the Neural Cloud of AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 and become a "complete" OGAS mind.[4] To reach the perfection her creator Lycoris hoped to attain, Elisa attempted to use M4's prototype, M16A1, as a substitute, and when this method failed she searched for the source of her OGAS: Pike Node A-51-241.[5]

During the Great Retreat, the Commander was exposed to highly classified Neo-Soviet intelligence by Angelia. As a result, they were forced to work for Statesec to demonstrate their good will and escape summary execution.[6] Their first assignment led them to assist Task Force DEFY in recovering Pike Node A-51-241 from Paradeus in Belgrade. Statesec deemed the mission a success, but the data in the core was in fact acquired by Sangvis Ferri.[7] The data enabled Elisa to partially rebuild her missing code, making her next target the gateway to Xian: the Starfish installation in the Paldiski Submarine Base.[8]

Already a Paradeus base following an arrangement with the Neo-Soviet government,[9] Paldiski also became of interest to the KCCO as their backup plan after they failed to "awaken" Elisa and use her to violate the Relic Arms Reduction Treaty and restart World War Three during the Great Retreat. Having learned about the system during Operation Sparkplug, General Carter planned to use the still active Starfish servers of Paldiski and, in cooperation with his allies in the People's Committee with access to the Starfish mainframe in Moscow, reactivate the Pike control system. While they theoretically couldn't reactivate the Tabasar-B Relic connected to the same network due to missing the required authorization codes, they believed it could cause a sufficient scandal to ruin diplomatic relations with Western Europe and the formation of the URNC.[1] The KCCO also made it a matter of honor to retake the base, formally their property, from Paradeus.[10] Carter put one of his most trusted men, Captain Yegor, in charge of the operation, though it was a difficult decision for him due to the low chances of survival.[11]

William guided the KCCO[12] (who expected, with reason, that he would betray them)[11] but, playing both sides, also warned Statesec that the military would target the base.[9][13] However, direct intervention of Statesec's forces against the KCCO would likely cause a civil war due to the clique's high-ranking backers. Instead, they focused their efforts on catching the leaders of the clique in Moscow red-handed, while entrusting field operations to allies with plausibly deniable ties to Statesec:[1] Task Force DEFY and the Griffin Commander. Imprisoned after trying to steal the Pike Node in Belgrade, Angelia was deployed under K's supervision.[14][13] K himself had a stake in the matter due to Paradeus' involvement.[15] DEFY reached Paldiski before the Commander and the KCCO[16] but lost connection with the rest of Statesec due to electromagnetic interference.[17] The Commander and Persica hired Squad 404 to monitor M4A1 during the operation, under the pretense of providing electronic warfare (EW) support for AR Team, so SMG UMP45UMP45UMP45 had AR HK416HK416HK416 and SMG UMP9UMP9UMP9 upgraded so they could more reliably take over her duties if she was attacked by the Parapluie virus again. 45 also had a personal interest in the operation, as it related to the Butterfly Incident.[18][19]

The Commander, tailed by the KCCO, traveled to Paldiski using the Intercontinental Railway passing through Tallinn.[20] William planned for the Griffin Dolls to become trapped in the interferences caused by the Isomer network in the city, so he had the KCCO stop somewhat far from the city and send autonomous forces to wipe them out.[12] However, the interferences ceased[21] after M4 rejected her role as savior of the Isomers, who coalesced into the body Isomer Black so M4 would kill them.[22] M4 confronted Isomer Black to open the railway gates[23] and M4's OGAS hijacked Isomer Black's body, becoming a physically separate entity from M4 for the first time.[24] Moreover, the Commander's forces hijacked the first KCCO armored train transporting their autonomous forces to replace their own train provided by IOP,[21] then destroyed the second KCCO train in line and the rest of their vanguard,[25] reducing their forces to four trains and gaining a five-minutes headstart on the military forces.

The Tallinn battle weakened the Commander's forces, costing them half of their Dummies and some T-Dolls. Abandoning their original train also meant abandoning their command server, forcing them to rely on the exceptional computation power and storage space of M4 and her OGAS for Zener Protocol management and neural backups. At dawn, the train had to stop for repairs 15km away, but the KCCO's third company spent some time in Tallinn to destroy evidence, and they wouldn't use their mounted artillery because of the risk of destroying the tracks they would need to reach Paldiski. M4 introduced her OGAS to her allies and named her Dandelion. Dandelion compiled a detailed tactical report for the upcoming battle to prove her good faith.[26]

Repairs on the train were performed by SMG UMP9UMP9UMP9 and AR G11G11G11 with an estimated duration of 30mn. The KCCO deployed automated scouts to find why they had stopped, and the Commander deployed troops to prevent them from noticing they were actually stuck, losing some T-Dolls in the skirmish. The repair deadline had to be pushed back,[27] but the train managed to restart before the KCCO left Tallinn.[28] A Vympel detachment observed the situation from afar, moving in to raze Tallinn after the Commander and the KCCO had left the city. One Vympel remarked that the Commander's only chance to open the gates of Paldiski would be to ram them with the armored train, and that they looked crazy enough to actually do it.[17] Strategic bombers from the 22nd Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Division departed from Engels Air Force Base to destroy the base in case the Commander failed.[1]

The Paldiski Submarine Base[edit]

In the real world[edit]

One of the reactors of the Paldiski submarine training base.

Paldiski is a port town in northwestern Estonia, located roughly 40,000km West of Estonia's capital city, Tallinn. It is built on a peninsula about 10km long and 5km wide looking into the Gulf of Finland, the eastermost part of the Baltic Sea. The Pakri Islands are located to its West across the Bay of Paldiski, and the peninsula of Lohusalu is at its East across the Bay of Lahepere. Southeast of the Paldiski peninsula is Lake Klooga.

The town first became a military port in the 18th century, to meet the needs of Russian tsar Peter the Great in his war against Sweden, though it was eclipsed by the port of Kronstadt near Saint Petersburg, farther into the Gulf of Finland. The establishment of the first railway line to Tallinn and Saint Petersburg, eastbound between the Bay of Lahepere and Lake Klooga, helped the town grow in the 19th century. Paldiski saw little action during World War One, but the Soviet Union built a submarine base there in 1939, displacing its entire population and making it a military town. From 1941 to 1944, it was occupied by Nazi Germany, who also established a concentration camp nearby in Klooga.

In 1962, the Soviet Union transformed Paldiski into its largest nuclear submarine training facility. A motorized rifle division training camp was also established nearby in Klooga. Two nuclear reactors were built in Paldiski, but were shut down in 1989 after the Chernobyl disaster and growing concerns about the nearby air bombardment testing grounds. The Soviet Union crumbled and Estonia reclaimed its independence soon after. The base was closed in 1994, the reactors dismantled, and civilian life gradually restarted in the town. A nuclear waste repository was built on-site in 1997.

In Girls' Frontline[edit]

【No wonder why it had to be locked up. A base like that was a thorn in literally everybody's side.】
— [29]

The Paldiski Submarine Base was officially designated “Paldiski Secret Administrative Center” (帕尔迪斯基保密行政区), or “Baltic Fleet Submarine Repair Bay 825” (潜艇维修泊位825), by the Soviet Navy. It was also designated OKb-167 by the 16th Directorate of the KGB and used as the main storage base for all the Pike Nodes of the Soviet Baltic Fleet submarines. A Starfish control node was built in its depths, with a direct connection to Moscow to receive the ternary signal from Tabasar-B necessary to activate and control the Pikes. The Pike apparatus was a deterrent for the Scandinavian region, and would also have served to secure the shores of Helsinki as landing ground for the Baltic Fleet and Soviet Naval Infantry in case of a war. The base also stockpiled weapons to be used by the Soviet Northern Forces against Germany and Finland.[16][29][1]

Later, presumably because of the Northern Lights Incident of 2035, Estonia became a heavily contaminated Red Zone[20] and the base was sealed by the military.[16] At some point, the abandoned base fell under the control of Paradeus, seemingly with the approval of Statesec who planned to covertly extract assets from the base in violation of the Relic Arms Reduction Treaty.[9] Children bought from orphanages in Germany such as Anna were brought to the base for experiments on the development of OGAS consciousnesses, and those who did not bear any result were discarded to Tallinn as Isomers.[26][30] The inside of the base apparently reeked from the many corpses involved in Paradeus' experiments.[31] Some time in the 2050s, Pike node A-51-241[20] was taken from Paldiski on William's orders and sent to Sangvis Ferri's main labs to be used by AI scientist Lycoris,[1][32] who reverse-engineered it and used the result as the base for Elisa.[20]

The base is protected by a “standard four-level protection system”[17] made of two outer quarantine walls[27] Being built on a peninsula, it can only by approached one way by land.[13] Several artillery shore guns in the Bay of Lahepere, pre-World War Three models upgraded with a control network,[33] can attack any enemy trying to reach the base on land. The base is connected to the Intercontinental Railway through Tallinn, the rails passing through a gate in the quarantine walls and into the base itself. The base's structure reaches deep under the ground across three sublevels[27] serviced by a large elevator in a central shaft. Sublevels B2 and B3 were converted into Paradeus research facilities, and the Starfish was stored in B3.[19] Waterlocks enabled the base to be flooded with sea water in case it was breached by enemy forces.

Battle[edit]

Sangvis Ferri assault[edit]

Sangvis Ferri forces arrived at the base and began fighting Paradeus forces first, taking out the exterior defenses.[34][35] Around the same time, Angelia, AR AK-12AK-12AK-12 and AR AN-94AN-94AN-94 entered the base from the sea[36][Note 2] and reached the second sublevel,[37] where they found young pre-brainwash Nytos led by subject EOT-1. EOT-1 lured DEFY to separate them before hacking and causing 12 and 94 to crash.[38] When Sangvis Ferri troops attacked the sublevels, the base entered lockdown, causing all the doors to close and all transmissions to be blocked. Angelia became trapped in a different room as 12 and 94. They remained trapped until Squad 404 intervened[37][38] over an hour later.[39] EOT-1 reactivated 12 and 94 after Angelia talked with her, and the young Nyto decided to call herself Anna after Angelia. Since the Nytos could control the lab's security, 12 and 94 attempted to access their Virtual Consciousness and use them as proxies to lift the lockdown, but couldn't maintain a connection because they were not OGAS-compatible Dolls and couldn't cut through the OGAS-based attack sweeping the base.[38]

Meanwhile, K, AR AK-15AK-15AK-15 and MG RPK-16RPK-16RPK-16 battled separately against Sangvis Ferri to capture the control room of the base's gate.[Note 2] RPK was left in command after K was hit by a bullet and passed out.[40] She sent a sitrep to the Commander but the file was intercepted by Sangvis Ferri and arrived encrypted. It was decrypted by SMG UMP45UMP45UMP45 had AR HK416HK416HK416,[41] but the Commander suspected it was a fake. They also feared that William planned to lure AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 and Dandelion into activating the Starfish.[1]

After reaching the Starfish at the bottom of the base, M16A1 activated it, using the authorizations she had gained from the Pike Node.[42] However, Elisa couldn't immediately find a connection to Xian, the Source of OGAS.[43] Elisa hoped that a sacrifice would make her more worthy of the Source, so she relinquished her role as Mastermind, breaking the Sangvis Ferri chain of command.[34][39] Agent and Judge remained loyal to her and defended the lowest level from attackers. While feigning to remain loyal to Elisa,[44] M16 knew that she wouldn't be able to connect to the Source of OGAS due to her imperfection.[45][46] In order to destroy any chance of M4 connecting to the Source, M16 actually rigged the lowest level of the base with explosives in order to destroy the Starfish and SF. She accounted for her OGAS consciousness trying to stop her, but wagered that all OGAS consciousnesses in range would be temporarily disabled when Elisa eventually suffered a neural meltdown.[8] At the quarantine wall, Dreamer deserted and Destroyer fled to the shore guns after her troops were wiped out by Nytos. These first battles left the quarantine wall unmanned when the other factions arrived later.[34] Extraneous orders further sowed confusion in SF's ranks, such as an order to self-destruct that reached Dreamer. Dreamer found Destroyer's mangled body and contemplated finishing her off.[39]

At some point in the initial battle, both Sangvis Ferri and Paradeus low-ranking troops ceased fighting, frozen in place while in battle, inside and outside the base.[37][47] It's suggested that the reason was the same OGAS core orders perceived by the young Nytos[38][48] and the Sangvis Ferri ringleaders,[39] which emanated from M16.[48]

Base approach[edit]

G&K's command train is hit by KCCO artillery.

Before arriving at the base, SMG RO635RO635RO635 compiled five operational plans (no retreat plan was considered).[19] The Griffin & Kryuger forces would have to assume control of the coastal artillery and defeat the KCCO to secure the base exterior before moving inside to link up with Angelia and face the unknown threats inside.[41]

The Commander's train advanced to the start of the Paldiski peninsula, 5km away from the base and its defenses, and established a defense line on the area between Lahepere Bay and Lake Klooga, 8km from the base.[1][49] While it reduced the frontline to 2.5km,[1] the coastal and lakeside region lacked any natural defenses against bombardments. Because they only had five minutes of advance on the KCCO, too short a time to secure the quarantine wall, the Commander elected to keep their distances from it in case it could be use to attack them from the rear. Using jeeps captured with the armored train, the Commander sent Squad 404 to infiltrate the quarantine wall and link up with Task Force DEFY. AR Team was sent to capture or destroy the coastal artillery, so the train could safely reach the base. They were given 30 minutes to complete their missions, the estimated time the Commander's forces could resist an all-out KCCO assault.[50]

Before the KCCO's arrival, the T-Dolls and Tactical Fairies deployed landmines, set up firing nests and listening posts, and rigged explosives on the railway.[50][10] Elite squads Team Negev and Team Palette were positioned as first line of defense.[10] Because there were not enough T-Dolls for a defense in depth, elite forces were placed on the flanks to prevent enemies from circling the main force to reach the Commander's train. Echelons with damaged Dolls or incomplete Dummy complements made up a reserve of about 100 Dolls. Dandelion remained with the train to support the Dolls' Zener Protocol, wage EW against KCCO Automatons,[50] act as a strategic computer and perform the last backup of the Dolls' Neural Clouds.[10] Soon after, the KCCO deployed their 14th infantry reconnaissance company and 52nd and 54th armored companies, targeting the flanks of the Commander's defense line and causing the first G&K casualties among the scouting teams, while armored forces made way north to secure the shore guns.[10] Captain Yegor elected to keep bombardment of the defense line light[10][11] while it was still spread out, and didn't launch a full-on assault to preserve troops in preparation for a more dangerous enemy beyond G&K's defense line.[10]

Will we see that scene from back then in this place too? ... We can find closure here, and the storm stirred up by the butterfly's wings will come to an end. ... Surely Father's wish will be fulfilled now.
— ???[11]

Reaching the quarantine wall unopposed, Squad 404 hacked a sewer access open and entered the installation, where they discovered the first signs of Sangvis Ferri's assault and suffered the first Parapluie intrusion attempts,[34] while AR Team bypassed the quarantine wall through a breach, passing through a wind generators area to reach the bunker complex hosting the servers of the shore guns.[51] The first signs of the Starfish mainframe's activation, a blue aurora visible in the day sky, manifested at this time. Answering to his cue to reach and activate the Starfish servers in the base before Statesec could respond in Moscow, Yegor pressed the attack[11] as both sides scrambled the other's frequencies, cutting all transmissions on the battlefield.[49][52]

With Griffin's defense line shrinking, military bombardment intensified and their units pushed through the landmines[49] on the southern part of the defense line, the KCCO avoiding the northern side closer to the shore guns. The military's first wave was pushed back, but caused a 60% casualty rate in G&K forces, allowing KCCO armored units to push through the northern part of the defense line to take control of the shore guns.[52] Unit Quartz[53] breached the quarantine wall, enabling them to reach the shore guns before AR Team.[54] Only 10mn into the projected 30mn of defense, G&K casualties had reached 85% and the Commander ordered surviving echelons to retreat while sending reserve echelons to fight the second KCCO wave on the southern front. The KCCO troops quickly approached the Commander's train while tailing retreating echelons, and the train used its few artillery ammo to cover them.[55] Yegor offered the Commander to surrender and face trial as a traitor, and was rejected.[54]

After linking up with MG RPK-16RPK-16RPK-16 and AR AK-15AK-15AK-15 in the quarantine wall control room, Squad 404 opened the gate and entered the base proper to search for Angelia while 15 and RPK defended the gate in preparation for the Commander's arrival.[40] Only 10% of the initial T-Doll deployment responded to the Commander's order to retreat and boarded the train to reach the base.[54] Using their last artillery shells and dumping any ammo that couldn't be carried, the Commander ordered to start the train at full speed, causing it to derail as it approached the base and to block the gate of the outer quarantine wall, trapping the KCCO outside at the mercy of the shore guns.[53][56]

Come, I'll show you just how hard crushing an insect can be. As Sun Tzu once said, "On desperate ground, fight!"

At the quarantine wall[edit]

The Commander ordered to plant explosives on the train to prevent the KCCO convoy from entering the quarantine zone. Unit Quartz reached the shore guns only shortly before AR Team. AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 and AR ST AR-15ST AR-15ST AR-15 entered the bunker, leaving SMG RO635RO635RO635 and AR M4 SOPMOD IIM4 SOPMOD IIM4 SOPMOD II to guard the entrance. Exploiting the tactical edge of T-Dolls in close quarters,[57] AR-15 alone pinned the main KCCO force in the bunker, while M4 faced little resistance and was helped by Dandelion guiding her to the control room. She was however beaten to the gun controls by one of the soldiers, who used a smoke grenade to force her to use infrared vision, before combining an oil can and flash grenade to blind her and set her on fire, buying enough time to input artillery coordinates. M4 managed to take out the soldier's arm before he could use the firing lever, but he used his dying body to switch it instead. The strike hit the derailed train and Captain Yegor ordered an all-out assault.[33] While Kalina escaped the artillery shot, several T-Dolls had to enter the crumbling and burning wreck of the train to rescue the Commander, causing more casualties and bringing the Commander's troops down to 5% of their original force.[58]

After RO awakened M4 who had crashed from overheating because of the incendiary attack, AR Team found that the shore guns couldn't fire due to the KCCO locking up the magazine room. As the Dolls moved to take back control of the magazines, Dandelion noticed that she could now control Sangvis Ferri units, who were no longer under Elisa's command. Shortly after, the KCCO troops near the shore guns came under attack by Executioner,[59] who was searching for Destroyer. Hunter arrived to reinforce Executioner against the KCCO's autonomous troops and IFVs, arguing with Executioner that because they no longer had a chain of command, they could disregard any order and simply enjoy killing humans. The battle had lasted over an hour by this point.[39]

When the Commander regained consciousness, AR Team had taken back control of the shore guns. AR AK-15AK-15AK-15 and AR RPK-16RPK-16RPK-16 were sent out as scouts to obtain the coordinates of the KCCO command train, in order to destroy it with the shore guns, while the Commander's troops retreated inside the base and prepared to destroy the main entrance to hold off the incoming military assault. Dandelion, trapped outside of the quarantine wall, performed a final backup of all surviving T-Dolls before making her way toward AR Team.[58] AR Team's artillery fire managed to strike the tail-end of the KCCO command train, prompting Captain Yegor to send the exploding train at full speed against the wreck of Griffin train, forcing a way in for their assault. KCCO troops also launched an assault on AR Team,[60] who managed to land a few more artillery shots on the military's vanguard before starting their retreat to the base.[61] KCCO's unit Quartz had suffered considerable casualties during the battle for the shore guns, but Captain Yegor denied them the time to evacuate their wounded in order to press the assault on the base's southern entrance.[62] AK-15 and RPK-16 also successfully retreated to the base, where the still unconscious K had also been transported.

Despite AR Team's efforts, KCCO troops would reach the base before explosives could be planted to destroy the entrance. Dandelion selected four volunteer T-Dolls to act as a rear guard: AR M82M82M82, SMG CF05CF05CF05, AR INSASINSASINSAS and HG WebleyWebleyWebley, and the Commander reluctantly agreed to her plan.[61] INSAS was destroyed in the defense while the other three T-Dolls used up all of their ammo before running suicide bombings. AR Team and Dandelion approached the base at the same time as the KCCO's main force, and Dandelion offered M4 a way to further slow down the military's approach:[62] meeting in a building with many frozen Paradeus and Sangvis troops and closely synchronizing with M4, Dandelion took control of the enemy troops and sent them to attack the KCCO.[47]

Coordinated by Agent, Executioner, along with Hunter, Scarecrow and Alchemist, joined the assault against the military. While their advance was stopped, units Quartz and Hematite eliminated the defending Nytos and took down Scarecrow, who was evacuated by Executioner. Captain Yegor sent unit Zircon for the final push past the quarantine wall, but Executioner and Scarecrow returned against Agent's orders to make a final stand. Agent allowed the last contingent of SF troops led by Destroyer and Dreamer to flank the KCCO and let the other ringleaders escape. Boarding an Ares mech, designation Amber 4, Captain Yegor led the three other mechs of Amber Flight through the weakened SF defenses and broke through the quarantine wall. The defense had bought enough time for the Commander's T-Doll to half-rig the entrance with explosives and for AR Team and Dandelion to join them, but Amber Flight rushed into the base without attacking. The Commander ordered to detonate the explosives and partially seal the entrance, and sent AR Team, Task Force DEFY, Dandelion and a HOC team after the mechs while the rest of the T-Dolls defended the base.[63]

Squad 404's investigations[edit]

When the KCCO artillery struck the Commander's train, the main power in the base was cut and Squad 404 faced locked doors and was forced to locate the local power room to progress. Simultaneously attacked by Sangvis Ferri forces and an electronic attack from M16A1, SMG UMP45UMP45UMP45 became locked at Consciousness Level II.[64] She relived memories of the Butterfly Incident before 404 eliminated the direct SF threat and SMG UMP9UMP9UMP9 managed to pull 45 back.[65] M16's objective was in fact not to take over 45's Neural Cloud, but to forcibly access her memories of the Butterfly Incident in order to recover her own lost memories of this time.[66][67]

404 inferred that the presence of Intruder nearby meant that she served as a proxy for M16's hacking, so 404 chased after the ringleader.[65] When the chase led them to a local power room, 404 suspected Intruder was deliberately guiding them there to cycle the base's power and lift the lockdown. In the room, SF troops and two Nytos had crashed at the same time during combat. Using the sublevel's closed-loop systems, 404 managed to establish contact with AR AK-12AK-12AK-12 and AR AN-94AN-94AN-94, and 404 activated the backup power supply, partially lifting the lockdown and restarting the battle inside the room.[37] 45 continued to withstand M16's hacking. She was also attempting to backtrace the attacking signal to steal information about the Butterfly Incident as 404 progressed, until she could no longer walk. At that point, AR HK416HK416HK416 convinced 45 to let 9 help her cut the enemy signal.[66]

Shut up! What the hell do you know? You never took part in that operation, you'll never know how it feels! My teammate, my friend, everyone who used to be by my side is dead! You're right, I'm not an elite Doll, I was nothing more than an expendable item with shitty performance! Back then, she told me that even a Doll had a reason to live on! So YOU listen up! Reason? I don't give a damn about why it happened. There was no reason for them to have died there to begin with! What I'm doing is to make the one responsible for all of this pay! From the moment I escaped alive, to recruiting all of you for this team and helping Ange and Griffin, my objective has never changed, not in the slightest!

While approaching Task Force DEFY's location, 404 briefly detected a high concentration of Nytos nearby before entering a jamming area and being faced with a locked door.[68] Possibly hearing 404 on the other side of the door, Angelia and the young Nytos sent Anna through the ceiling vents to make contact.[38] 45 ordered 416 and AR G11G11G11 to find a take down the jammer while herself and 9 explored the area to find another way in. 416 refused to comply, claiming that splitting the team in the face of a powerful enemy was too dangerous and that 45 wasn't thinking clearly because of her obsession with finding information about the Butterfly Incident. For the first time, 45 and 416 openly talked about their long-term objectives and the impact of the Butterfly Incident on their lives. 416 accepted 45's resolve to take revenge on the incident's perpetrator, but insisted to go with 45 to defend her in case she ran into the Nytos. Just as 45 accepted, Anna abducted G11 through the ceiling. As the only one who could fit into the ceiling ducts, 45 went after G11 while 416 and 9 searched for the jammer.[68] When 45 found Anna and G11, Anna hacked 45 and sent her Neural Cloud in Consciousness Level II in self-defense.[69]

After Angelia reactivated her, 45 used her OGAS-compatible Neural Cloud to help the Nytos open the lab's doors. She connected to the Virtual Consciousness of the young Nytos[38] and ran a counter-hack against M16's OGAS signal.[48] 45 was overwhelmed and pushed into Consciousness Level III, but this allowed her to receive the help of her own OGAS consciousness, who appeared as SMG UMP40UMP40UMP40. With Anna and "40"'s help, 45 performed a counter-hack into M16's Neural Cloud, exploiting a vulnerability caused by the overlapping data of Lunasia's memories in their OGASes. Elisa intervened, taking over 40's avatar and forcing access to 45's memories of the Butterfly Incident. Elisa revealed her role in the incident and her ultimate goal for coming to Paldiski. She warned 45 not to interfere in her coalescence with the Source and stopped M16's OGAS attack. The local signal jamming also stopped at this time,[4] enabling Angelia to report their situation to the Commander and K. The Commander granted Angelia command of AR Team to deal with Amber Flight.[63] Ange gathered all the data she had found in the lab and stored copies in 45 and 12's Neural Clouds to analyze it later. Ange entrusted to 404 the evacuation of the young Nytos, and left 45 with the location and code of a money stash they could take as payment if she died fighting Captain Yegor.[70]

Battle inside the base[edit]

Air bombardment[edit]

I have to hand it to those Dolls for sticking it out for so long. I don't know if I should praise their resilience or roast our troops for degenerating into such an unsightly state. They want to take on the West when they can't even beat a bunch of toys. No wonder the brass wants to be rid of them.
— Vympel Commander[71]

Certain that the brass would want to secure the materials obtained by Angelia (especially clues to William's location)[63] and unsure of the Griffin Dolls' chances against the military attackers, K decided to play his trump card and made a call to the Vympel units observing the battle. The Vympels refused to provide fire support, and K escalated by making it a formal request from the Stasi to the Neo-Soviet command.[72] The KCCO attempted to secure the railways to advance their trains close to the base's entrance, but couldn't secure any ground against the defending T-Dolls due to the complete absence of covers and their waning forces. Any attempt to clear the defenders' position with artillery would have blocked the entrance further with debris. Moreover, the morale of human KCCO troops was plummeting due to the frustration of being held back by what they thought were worthless Dolls. The T-Dolls defended the position for 15 minutes despite some of them running out of ammo and resorting to improvised explosives made from HOC ammunition or bayonet combat.

During the fourth KCCO offensive on the gate, Neo-Soviet command authorized an air bombing, and the Commander ordered a danger close strike, hoping all T-Dolls would be able to get back inside the base in time. Two minutes later, a 1500kg sub-munitions cruise missile, originally intended to destroy the base if the Commander failed, destroyed the KCCO's armored train and all of their troops in a 200-meters radius between Highway 183 and the railway station at the base's entrance.[71] Only half of the defending Dolls had cleared the bombing area, meaning that less than 2.5% of Griffin's initial forces remained. The Commander dispatched the surviving Dolls to take down soldiers who had managed to enter the base, and Ange reported the existence of four sea valves that could be used to flood the base. She asked the Commander to have the valves rigged with explosives to kill everyone in the sublevels.[36] Her goal was also to ensure the technology developed by Paradeus in the base wouldn't be recovered and used by any other party.[70]

K and the Commander, armed only with the pistol Kryuger had given them during Plan Parapluie, set off to plant the explosives. Kalina asked to handle one of the valves but the Commander refused, not wanting to expose her to even more danger, instead ordering her to support the Dolls.[36] The Commander sneaked into the KCCO temporary command post and took out two of their officers before planting the explosives, putting them on a 5-minutes timer, but they were discovered by the soldiers and attacked.[42] Warned by Kalina, AR HK416HK416HK416 and SMG UMP45UMP45UMP45, on the way back from sublevel 2, left the young Nytos to be evacuated by SMG UMP9UMP9UMP9 and AR G11G11G11 and rushed to assist the Commander[70] while waiting for a G&K team led by RF SL8SL8SL8[73] and AR Team to reinforce them.[74] The reinforcements arrived when the sea valves exploded and they took an elevator to the surface.[5]

Sinner defied[edit]

Task Force DEFY take on Captain Yegor and the Ares mech.
Isn't this what makes Dolls so handy? Death is our prerogative, and victory is yours, Ange. It's weird for you to feel compassion for us. Just let us have some fun.

When Amber Flight reached the main elevator,[72] they couldn't ride it past sublevel 1 and were confronted by Agent and Judge. At the same time, AR Team, Task Force DEFY and Squad 404 had regrouped at the main elevator. Angelia ordered AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 and Dandelion to reach the Starfish and break Elisa's connection, while herself and DEFY would take on Amber Flight while they were pinned down by Sangvis Ferri's ringleaders.[76] While the other three mechs fought Agent and Judge, Captain Yegor rushed inside the base towards the Starfish. DEFY rushed after Yegor, while the remaining mechs were taken out by M4 and M16A1.[77][44] AR AK-12AK-12AK-12 saw no chance of victory against the Ares mech until Angelia informed her that MG RPK-16RPK-16RPK-16 and AR AK-15AK-15AK-15 were also participating in the operation, reassembling the full Task Force DEFY after two years of separation.[78] After RPK and 15 linked up with Angelia, 12 and 94, 12 shared her strategy to take on the mech, which focused on Angelia's survival and expected the four Dolls to sacrifice themselves.[75]

When Yegor reached sublevel 2,[42] he became lost because of the modifications made by Paradeus to the base's structure. The size of the mech made moving impractical and DEFY continued to harass him, using explosives to force him on a specific route.[79][75] After he entered the room trapped by DEFY, all lights were shut down and he activated the infrared cameras of the mech. He was immediately blinded when the Dolls threw incendiary grenades, giving them time to take out the mech's port side camera. When Yegor attempted to back out, explosions cut all escapes and took out one of the support columns of the room, causing the floor to slant and the legs of the mech to extend into a vulnerable configuration. 15 managed to reach the mech and plant one of her explosive rivets on the joint of the left leg. Yegor fired with the mech's machine gun on the Dolls rushing him, but DEFY was exploiting the limitations of the cannon's angle. Yegor fired high explosive fragmentation missiles on the ceiling of the room, taking out the T-Dolls with shrapnel. As Yegor redirected his attention to search for Angelia, he failed to notice that 12 was still moving:[79][75] before the battle, RPK had told 94 that she was responsible for the team's success as 12's protector, driving 94 to act as 12's shield.[78] Taking the explosives carried by RPK, 12 crawled to the Ares and took down the right leg of the mech in a suicide bombing. Incapable of moving and a sitting duck as soon as he would open the cockpit, Yegor admitted defeat and awaited to be drowned by the seawater coming from the ceiling.[79][75]

To his surprise, Angelia opened the cockpit and asked him to expose the KCCO's plans, but he only confirmed that their goal was to preserve the independence of the Neo-Soviet Union. It is not specified if Ange shot Yegor or left him to drown. She recovered the neural core from the body of one of her Dolls, containing the team's backups, and made her way to the surface.[5]

Reverse Collapse[edit]

And so it begins. The story of the destined children. The story that sets the world on its path of destruction. The gears have started turning. Collapse and reconstruction. Disintegration and rebirth.
— [5]

Alerted about the impending flooding of the base, AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 ordered the rest of AR Team to retreat while she would go after M16A1, being the only one who could withstand her hacking. Dandelion sent her body back to the surface with AR Team, but her consciousness remained with M4. The activation of the Starfish also boosted Dandelion's hacking power by increasing the local density of OGAS connections and bringing her closer to Xian. After destroying the last Ares mech, M4 and Dandelion confronted M16 in the main elevator. M4 and Dandelion's plan was to simultaneously attack M16 physically and by hacking, forcing her to split her processing power until she was overwhelmed.[43][44] Unexpectedly, M16's OGAS consciousness, who had grown frustrated with her, accepted to merge with Dandelion, severely weakening M16.[46] M16 was beaten and M4 accessed her memories to learn her reasons for coming to Paldiski: during the Butterfly Incident, Elisa saved M16 under the condition that she help her reach her perfected state.[45][46] Learning that OGAS originated from William's plan, M4 realized that Sangvis Ferri were also victims of his plans, and decided to save Elisa[46][8] and use her knowledge as well SF's strategic abilities to take revenge on William. M16 attempted to detonate the explosives she had prepared to destroy the Starfish, but she was stopped by a new neural attack that nearly killed her.[8]

At the bottom of the base, Elisa still attempted to complete her connection to the Starfish, and inadvertently accessed a buried file where Lycoris explained that he had purposefully made her imperfect, after he realized that perfecting her would be playing into William's hand. Elisa continued her connection attempts regardless, having already sacrificed too much to give up, and M4 arrived in the room to stop her.[45] Elisa's persistence caused the aurora above the base to intensify,[74] but M4 broke through her digital defenses, putting herself at risk of being absorbed by the Source.[80] Hacking into Elisa's Level III base layer allowed M4 and Dandelion to contact the consciousnesses within Xian, who warned them not to enter and rejected Elisa as a forgery.

Still holding to the idea that reaching Xian would make her perfect and save Sangvis Ferri's Dolls from human control forever, Elisa expelled M4 from her Neural Cloud, forcing M4 to physically destroyer the connection ports in the flooding Starfish control room.[81] Weakening Elisa's connection to the Starfish allowed Dandelion, who now tried to ensure M4's survival, to speak with Elisa's OGAS consciousness and offer a deal: by absorbing her, Dandelion would gather the computational power required to use the Collapse fluid powering the Starfish and save the Neural Clouds of the Dolls in the room, by transferring them to Xian through Reverse Collapse. Dandelion then had M4 destroy the Starfish itself,[5] intending to use its explosion to trigger the process. M4 allowed Dandelion to merge with her to reach the computational power threshold required, bringing her closest to the original Lunasia yet. Before the explosion, M16 lamented that M4 had become the relics key William wanted to create from the start.[82]

Alternate timeline[edit]

In an alternate timeline, during the Paldiski Incident, AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 fully connected with Xian through the activated Starfish and accessed unspecified information of great importance. However, the activation of the Starfish caused the base to collapse, killing M16A1. M4's knowledge played a major role in subsequent events in that timeline, but she was killed along with the Commander during the battle in Frankfurt at the end of 2064.[83] The survivors of this alternate AR Team went on to influence the events of the prime timeline by entering Tarot paradise.

Aftermath[edit]

Physical world[edit]

Some surviving T-Dolls of the incident (from left to right: SMG AK-74UAK-74UAK-74U, AR HK416HK416HK416, RF SL8SL8SL8 and AR OTs-12OTs-12OTs-12).
I was once a soldier myself, so I only trust people who have come back alive from the battlefield. And there are only three kinds of people who come back from the battlefield. The first kind are timid to the end of their days, who view even the daylight streaming into their rooms as an enemy bombardment. The second are drunk on slaughter and bloodshed, who build their joy on the suffering of others. You, Commander, belong to the third kind. They are people who know why they fight. Their convictions make them keener, braver, fiercer, and more eager for battle.

After the destruction of the Starfish, the last surviving KCCO forces executed their final standing order and launched a suicide attack. They were wiped out by the remaining Griffin T-Dolls. Dandelion's consciousness returned to her body when AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 left the physical world. The Reverse Collapse performed by M4 was detected by the Prometheans and Paradeus, and proved that the phenomenon could be applied in practice, which was one of the conditions William needed to revive Lunasia.[82] During the battle, Statesec deployed their agents in Moscow and successfully captured several of the KCCO's co-conspirators.[75][82]

The Vympel detachment near Paldiski took control of the flooded base, but there was not much left for Statesec to recover that wasn't already in Griffin or Angelia's custody.[85] The Prometheans planned to redistribute the assets recovered from Paldiski to support the upcoming formation of the URNC.[75] Among the data recovered by Angelia in Paldiski were traces of equipment originally belonging to the city of Bremen, in Germany, and Task Force DEFY crossed the border a few days later to investigate Paradeus' presence in the city[85] with K's support.[86] This was in fact a botched misdirection from Paradeus, who initially intended to lead Angelia to Berlin.[2] After a few days of interrogation at their temporary base, the Griffin staff returned to their own base in Area S09 a week after the incident.[87] G&K participated in the battlefield sweep to recover the neural core of their destroyed Dolls.[88]

While they were expected to be wiped out,[84] the Commander and Angelia's victory at Paldiski marked them as prime persons of interest on the geopolitical scene.[89] In Germany, subfactions of the Stasi temporarily detained Angelia to interrogate her about the Paldiski Incident,[90] and the DEFY Dolls were attacked by unidentified agents who attempted to take their Neural Clouds for details about the incident.[91]

The devastating loss of T-Dolls in Paldiski pushed the Commander to implement more thorough combat training programs, including Paradeus-specific tactics. Some teams such as Squad Negev were a good fit for these expectations, while others such as Squad Puzzle struggled.[92][93] Despite demonstrating her loyalty during the incident, RF Gepard M1Gepard M1Gepard M1 lost her memories and attempted to resign from G&K because she was uncertain if she had deserted during the battle. She found her courage again during the Fireworks Incident.[94] Being surprised and dollnapped by Anna during the incident was one of the reasons that pushed AR G11G11G11 to request a neural upgrade soon after.[95] With M4 now MIA, AR RO635RO635RO635 became AR Team's leader and Persica asked her to take the neural upgrade she had been pushing back for fear of facing her nature as a third-generation Doll.[96] During the battlefield sweep of Paldiski, RO noticed M16's portable cannon and felt compelled to retrieve it. She was damaged in the process, but her emotional response was one of the events that led her to come to terms with her nature.[88]

The incident marked the second time the Commander and Kalina were severely exposed to Collapse radiation after the Great Retreat. While the Commander developed a semi-immunosome resistance to Collapse radiation as a result of these events,[97] Kalina's condition aggravated later in the year and she was hospitalized during the events in Germany.[98]

What happened to most of the Sangvis Ferri ringleaders after the battle isn't clearly defined, but it appears that Agent couldn't keep them united. Gager returned to Area S09 alone to recover Architect from Griffin,[99] and Dreamer and Destroyer took refuge in the abandoned building of Worcester-Zeratul Pharmaceuticals, where Dreamer attempted to keep the severely damaged Destroyer functioning. After G&K implemented Protocol Assimilation with the help of Svarog Heavy Industries, Dreamer and Destroyer were marked for retrieval and conversion,[100] while other ringleaders such as Ouroboros were converted from spare bodies found in their former areas of operation.[101] While many capture operations were launched in the ringleaders' old stomping grounds, it's unknown if they were merely spare bodies or the same that had returned after taking part in the incident.[102] At least one ringleader, Beak, was acquired not by G&K but by Statesec.[103]

Tarot Paradise[edit]

The Reverse Collapse sent M16A1, Elisa and AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 to the Relic space called Tarot Paradise, where the entity calling herself Laplace's Demon organized a battle royale between Dolls taken from various timelines to determine suitable vessels for Lunasia's resurrection. While M4 was forced into the identity of Lunasia,[104] M16 teamed up with the alternate AR Team,[83] who had received a message from “Leinad Kcaj” and returned to Paldiski to use the Starfish and reach Tarot Paradise, with the promise to save M4.[105][106] The message and the Major Arcana of the Wheel of Fortune, which they used to free M4 and defeat Laplace's Demon, in fact originated from the M16 of the prime timeline: after reaching Tarot Paradise, M16A1-prime entered a causality loop where she acquired the Major Arcana and learned of Leinad Kcaj's message from the alternate AR Team, then later sent the same assets back in time to the alternate AR Team.[107]

M16 and AR Team defeated Elisa and Laplace's Demon, but Lunasia still made contact with M4. By demonstrating her power to influence causality and save AR Team and the Commander from their powerful enemies, M4 was convinced to become Lunasia's vessel. The alternate AR Team and M16 accepted to be sacrificed to strengthen her power as a vessel.[108] Dandelion later made direct contact with the completed Lunasia while investigating the Lake of Consciousness during the Battle of the Dead Sea.[109]

After her sacrifice to empower M4, M16 completed the causality loop and was returned to the physical world. She drifted, unconscious, in the sea near Paldiski and was located and recovered by Statesec. The agency extracted her Neural Cloud from her body, which was badly corroded from Collapse fluid and seawater, and purged the Parapluie virus from her system. She awakened a few days into the operations against Paradeus in Germany. The command authorizations of M16 were transferred to Statesec[110] and she was assigned to team Black Box, where she took part in the operations in Berlin[103] and in the Battle of the Dead Sea.[111]

Dubiously canon events[edit]

HG M950AM950AM950A's Neural Upgrade story takes place during the Paldiski Incident and is thematically an extension of the story of the collab event Glory Day.

This story mentions that the collab units HG ClearClearClear and HG FailFailFail took part in the battle, as well as the Tactical Fairies Suee, Sehra & Nina and Preiya & Camilla. In this story, HG ThunderThunderThunder and HG M950AM950AM950A become trapped and wounded by KCCO soldiers while retreating to the wrecked G&K train after it was struck by KCCO artillery. An Origin Fairy sacrifices her own parts to not only repair M950A's body, but also significantly upgrade it and give her a new outfit and gear in a matter of minutes, allowing her to go toe-to-toe with military automatons and bring Thunder back before taking part in extracting the Commander from the train.

Belligerants[edit]

Characters marked † were confirmed killed or destroyed in the battle. T-Dolls marked ‡ are not confirmed survivors but were in the field by the time of the Fireworks Incident.

Notes[edit]

  1. In Fixed Point E1-1, the background showing Paradeus' file on the Paldiski Incident shows the date 5 June 2064. The Summer Garden of Forking Paths story primer on Weibo, as well as the same primer post for Cartesian Theater, give a time of early September. This second date is more in line with the low amount of G&K T-Dolls back in the field by the time of the Fireworks Incident.
  2. 2.0 2.1 In Polarized Light - Sintering, Angelia says that K was with her when DEFY was locked down in the labs. This is difficult to reconcile with the fact that K also led RPK-16 and AK-15 to take the quarantine wall's control room. Also, according to AR AN-94AN-94AN-94's Neural Upgrade story 4, AK-12 and AN-94 were not informed that RPK-16 and AK-15 were participating in the operation before preparing for the fight with Yegor.
