Weapon Background[edit]

The OTs-14 'Groza' ("Thunderstorm") is a bullpup-configured, modular assault rifle system developed during the early 1990s by V. Telesh and Ju. Lebedev at the TsKIB SOO (Central Design Bureau for Sporting and Hunting Arms). Like its predecessor project the OTs-12 'Tiss', the design of the 'Groza' is based on the AKS-74U, and was an attempt to integrate all the best features from the various close quarter combat weapons in service into one singular unit. OTs-14 units have a great amount of interchangeable parts with the standard AK-74U.

As a modular firearm, the 'Groza' can cope with many different cartridge types such as the Soviet 7.62x39mm M43, 5.45x39mm M74, 5.56x45mm NATO and 9x39mm SP-5/6. The modular design allows the rifle to be quickly refitted to chamber different caliber munitions for any given mission types. It also allows for quick swapping of configurations in the field, filling roles from a short range carbine to a longer range DMR. The MVD (Ministry of Internal Affairs) at the time was only interested in the 9x39mm subsonic firing configuration known as the Groza-4, so during the ongoing conflicts in Chechnya, only the Groza-4 kits were produced. Though the 7.62x39mm firing Groza-1 kit was manufactured later on after finding procurement client(s).

The 'Groza' works on the same internal operational principle as the AKS-74U, but the gas-operated, rotating bolt mechanism is arranged in a bullpup configuration instead. The compact bullpup design gave the 'Groza' increased portability and improved balance, with some proposing that the rifle can be fired single-handily without issues. A number of features related to the layout of the weapon controls were retained from the AK-74U. The Groza-4 variant makes use of the 20-round magazines originally developed for the earlier 'Tiss' project, and the 'Groza' is able to be fired at a rate of 700 rounds per minute. Meanwhile, the Groza-1 is fed using AK-47/AKM 30-round magazines and is able to achieve a 750 rounds per minute rate of fire.

Like most modular assault rifles, the OTs-14 can be outfitted with many combat accessories on the provided rails. Scopes/optics such as the PSO can be mounted directly on the carrying handle. The standard issue 'Groza' kit comes with a number of specially-designed accessories such as suppressors, night optics, foregrips, and cleaning kits. On top of all that, the rifle also had a specially modified GP-25/30 under-barrel grenade launcher unit with a custom-made alternative pistol grip design, which could launch a grenade from the launcher and fire the gun with a single trigger pull.

Much like the AS Val, OTs-14 rifles are a rare sight to see within the Russian military. They are only issued to certain Spetsnaz units and combat engineers of the airborne troops. The 'Groza' saw minor action in the Chechnya counter-terrorism campaigns.[1][2]

Character Design

Groza appears to be a slim built T-Doll with an approximated 160-165cm body height. Long yellow hair with a pink-ish hue flows to well past her knees, paired with bright golden eyes. In the Official Girls Frontline Art Book, her artist, ASK, commented on the designing of Groza:[3]

"The name 'Groza' sounded real cool, so I drew a cool-looking Russian lady. (觉得闪电这名字特别酷就画了英俊的毛子小姐姐)"

"The hair style is a low end twin ponytail! The tie is a sailor's neckerchief square knot. (发型是低双马尾! 胸前是金鱼草结)"

"By the way, her pantsu are of the low-waist style (啊顺便,内裤,是低腰的)."

Being one of the most adaptive assault rifles in the world, this rifle comes with many spare parts. ASK commented on this as well in the art book: "The gun had many parts, so I gave her a box. (枪的部件比较多就给配了个箱子)". It is possible this is inspired by the standard issue aluminum box the Groza weapon kits come with.

In her default art, she is holding the 7.62x39mm M43 firing Groza-1 configuration. Her damaged art, however, shows a slightly different sized barrel in terms of width and length, similar to the 9x39mm SP-5/6 firing Groza-4.[4] Groza units can fire different caliber cartridges by changing certain components, one of which is the barrel, so 'hot swaps' can even be done on the battlefield. Or perhaps this was just a simple artist mistake.

Trivia

  • Groza means “Thunderstorm” in Russian.
  • Groza is the poster girl for Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium, and appears on the app icon for all versions of the game as well on official social media accounts.
  • Groza has unused animations for a grenade skill, similar to SMG IDWIDWIDW93. Groza likely wielded a grenadier skill that was changed some time along her development.
    • Interestingly, Groza regains grenade skills in Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium, as is showcased in the Gameplay Demo.[5]
