Weapon Background

The QJY-88, also known as the Type 88 LMG (Chinese: 88式通用机枪, 1988 shì tōngyòng jīqiāng; English: 1988 model general purpose machine gun), is a gas-operated Chinese light machine gun designed in the late 1980s by China North Industries Corporation, otherwise known as Norinco. The QJY-88 was created to replace the obsolete Type 67 machine gun in service with the PLA at the time, although the exact time that the QJY-88 was entered into service is still unclear.

The QJY-88 was built to be lightweight, portable, and possess a high rate of fire. It was also among the first weapons designed to chamber China's proprietary 5.8×42mm cartridge, alongside the QBU-88 marksman's rifle. This cartridge was apparently selected to allow the gun to be lighter in weight while still possessing similar ballistics and power to something like the M249 SAW. The QJY-88 feeds these cartridges from a belt, loaded from the left side.
