Weapon Background[edit]

The AK-47 (also known as the Kalashnikov, or simply as the AK) is a selective-fire, gas-operated 7.62×39mm assault rifle. It was developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov, after whom the rifle is named. It is officially known in Soviet documentation as the 'Avtomat Kalashnikova' (Russian:Автомат Калашникова, or Automatic Kalashnikov). It is the originating firearm of the Kalashnikov rifle family.[1]

Design work on the AK-47 began in the final years of World War II. Mikhail Kalashnikov, then serving as part of the 24th Tank Regiment, 108th Tank Division, would be injured following the Battle of Bryansk in October 1941,and would be hospitalized until April of the following year. In the last few months of being in hospital, he overheard some fellow soldiers bemoaning their current rifles, which were plagued with reliability issues, such as jamming. As he continued to overhear the complaints that the Soviet soldiers had, as soon as he was discharged, he went to work on what would become the AK rifle.[2]

In 1946, the AK-47 was presented for official military trials, and in 1948, the fixed-stock version was introduced into active service with selected units of the Soviet Army. In 1949, the AK-47 was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces and used by the majority of the member states of the Warsaw Pact, replacing the Simonov-designed SKS rifle. The Kalashnikov platform continues to serve the Russian military to this day, with the more modern AK-12 variant serving as the standard infantry rifle of their armed forces.

The AK-47 was designed to be a simple and reliable automatic rifle that could be manufactured quickly and cheaply, using mass production methods that were state-of-the-art in the Soviet Union during the late 1940s. The AK platform utilizes a long-stroke gas piston system, with the gas piston being mechanically fixed to the bolt group. The long-stroke gas system is generally associated with great reliability in adverse conditions, which has contributed to the AK's reputation as being rugged and dependable.[3] Other weapons that use a long-stroke gas piston system include the FN FNC and the M1 Garand.

Even after almost seven decades, the AK platform and its variants remain the most popular and widely-used assault rifles in the world because of their substantial reliability under harsh conditions, low production costs compared to contemporary Western weapons, its availability in virtually every geographic region, and ease of use. The AK-47 has been manufactured in numerous countries, and has seen service with armed forces as well as irregular forces worldwide, and has seen use in armed conflicts since the days of the Cold War. The AK was the basis for developing many other types of individual and crew-served firearms, including the Finnish Rk-62 and the Israeli Galil. As of 2004, "Of the estimated 500 million firearms worldwide, approximately 100 million belong to the Kalashnikov family, three-quarters of which are AK-47s".[4]

Character Design

AK wears an outfit that calls to mind the guerilla groups from Cuba and South America in the 1980s, with a beret and camouflage gear worn along with a green bikini top and shorts. The tattoo on her right arm appears to be a classic communist hammer and sickle, however upon closer inspection, the hammer has been replaced by a large handgun. The ensemble makes AK-47 resemble a communist insurgent, but the outfit itself seems to be worn to draw attention as much as anything else, as AK-47 enjoys stirring up trouble.

In AK-47's 'Lord of War' costume, she dresses like a gangster, and the AK she wields has been gold-plated. Kalashnikovs are popular in the criminal underworld because they are widely smuggled and relatively cheap on the black market. Coincidentally, "Lord of War" is also the title of a Nicolas Cage movie about a famous weapons trafficker.[5].

Trivia

  • AK-47 was awarded to players as part of the 'First-7-Days' event.
  • Ironically, AK-47 does not use a "true" AK-47. In her default art, she has an AKM. In her 'Lord of War' costume, she has an AK-49 Type 3.
  • During the prologue, AK-47 was one of the T-Dolls who fought against Agent's forces to buy time for the Anti-Rain Team as they retreated from the area. Her ultimate fate is unknown, but it's assumed that she was destroyed along with the rest of the defenders.
  • The AK-47 has a reputation for being inaccurate compared to the modern rifles. This is usually due to its users utilizing a 'spray & pray' action with the weapon whether they're behind cover or in an open location, both making the gun harder to control and wearing down the barrel making accurate shots even more difficult.
    • With the barrel replaced and iron sights zeroed, the accuracy of the AK-47 is considered decent for an assault rifle. In tests, the rifle was shown to be able to hit targets ranging from 300 ~ 500 meters, although its accuracy is still inferior when compared to more modern assault rifles.
  • The bottle-shaped object tied to AK’s satchel is an RPG-43 Anti Tank Grenade.
  • When put into an echelon with AR AK-74MThumb button.pngAK-74M  whose skill is at any level, AK-47's damage and accuracy skill buff values will be swapped with each other.
