Weapon Background[edit]
The P22 is a semi-automatic handgun introduced in 2002. It is manufactured by Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen, and is chambered for the .22LR rimfire cartridge.
The exterior styling of the P22 bears a striking resemblance to the Walther P99, albeit being smaller in size (about 75% the size of the P99) and being chambered for a smaller caliber round. The most noticeable exterior differences are the P22's slide-mounted, thumb-operated, ambidextrous safety and its external hammer. The P22 can be purchased with a 3.4-inch short barrel or with a 5-inch barrel, the latter of which includes a barrel-mounted weight compensator matching the profile of the slide. The P22 was originally designed in such a way that the two different barrel assemblies could be easily interchanged, and "combo" packages including both barrels were offered for sale.
