| “ | She said Dr. Meitner was the most calm and rational human she had ever met, always clear on what she needed and wanted to do, and capable of ruthlessly eliminating any obstacles. But she wasn't sure whether that was a good thing or a bad thing for a human being. | ” |

Professor Martha Meitner (玛莎•迈特纳), also known under the nickname Laplace (拉普拉斯) and target designation Capita (死罪, lit. “Capital Offense”), was an American Relic Technology scientist formerly affiliated with the Relics Agency, and later an important member of Paradeus. She was instrumental in the creation of Nytos.
Along with Persica, Samantha Shaw and Arthur Hume, Laplace is one of the “four great scientists” whose legacies are driving the second part of Girls' Frontline's story.[2] She's featured on the cover of the fourth set of Mankind Is No longer Solitary as a result.
Background
Meitner studied at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore along with Gray Blackwell.[3][4] A dedicated scientist, she lived and worked at the applied physics lab after her graduation, leading to the Relics Agency recruiting her.[5] Meitner became renowned for her research on Relics,[6] especially for the Holy Grail Project.[4] She also participated in the creation of the Dog Tag System and Daybreak Squad, and gave Aliana her name.[7] Both projects were inspired to her by a paper from Arthur Hume she bought from the black market for a trifle.[8][9] However, she was fired for conducting unethical experiments.[10][4] At some point, Meitner was married to a man named Shaun Rodriguez, and they lived in Washington D.C. with their daughter Sana.[Note 1] Martha and Shaun eventually divorced due to Martha's workaholic and unemotional personality. Two months after their divorce, Meitner left the United States for the Neo-Soviet Union with no warning, taking her six-years old daughter with her.[11]
In 2047, two years after the start of World War Three, Meitner and Sana arrived in the small town of Beslan. Meitner was apparently serving prison time and was on a three-months probation to teach introductory physics in the local high school, but her nationality made her a target for the patriotic people of Beslan, especially since she replaced a teacher who had enlisted and died in the war.[3] She survived Operation Eternal Flame, the massacre of Americans in the town by the Beslan Guard Regiment,[12] and made uneasy friends with Anna Tsoi,[13] who gave her the nickname Laplace, from Laplace's Demon.[14]
After Sana died during a terrorist attack in Beslan,[15] Meitner sent a letter from Beslan in 2050 and made a desperate plea for Blackwell's help to resurrect Sana and take revenge against the Relic Agency.[16] In 2051, in Moscow, Meitner pursued experiments to resurrect Sana by restarting the Holy Grail Project[17] under the name Hela Project,[5] but Blackwell deemed the project a failure the same year.[15] Blackwell also judged that the Hela Project was contradicting the Hippocratic Oath and stopped supporting Meitner.[5] In a letter, Blackwell accused Meitner of having sacrificed one of her students and that Meitner's goal was never for Sana's sake.[18] Ironically, it is Blackwell who introduced Meitner to Rudolf von Oberstein,[14] the secret leader of the organization Meitner would eventually join, Paradeus.[10] Despite her efforts, the progress of the Hela Project was very slow and clones of Sana never replicated the child as she envisioned.
In 2051, the United States conducted Operation Couatl and deployed Daybreak Squad to capture Meitner, who was known under the name Laplace and target designation "Capita". The mission was a failure and Meitner escaped.[19][20] Daybreak was unaware that they had been sent to kill their creator.[1] Meitner was eventually contacted by Lunasia von Oberstein, leader of the Evangel Axis cult in Germany, who promised Meitner unlimited resources for her experiments in exchange for turning her into a Relic key capable of destroying the world.[21] Meitner thus became a member of Project Valkyrie and Paradeus under the nickname “Laplace”, and her objective of performing a resurrection aligned with Lunasia's own objective after Lunasia's death during an experiment.[22] As the lead researcher on Project Valkyrie, Meitner should have used the codename William, but she disliked it and passed it to Rudolf's young son Ballard instead, only inheriting the codename's duties.[23] Rudolf allowed his son to act as Paradeus' leader instead of Meitner, recognizing that she had no interest in anything other than her research[22] and that it was safer to keep the organization within the Oberstein family.[24] Meitner continued to exchange letters with Blackwell in 2058, sharing the difficulties of the Hela Project and hoping to meet her in Bremen,[25] though Blackwell may already have been replaced by her Nyto clone. Meitner performed the Nytofication of Gray herself. William ran his own Project Cocoon in parallel to Laplace's experiments.[26] An early replica of Sana rejected by Laplace would become the central defense of Paradeus headquarters, and Nemhran would form a motherly bond with her in Meitner's place.[27]
Character Info
Meitner is a cold and ruthless woman who believes science shouldn't be slowed down by ethics,[10] demonstrated by the enormous amount of test subjects she discarded over the lifetime of the Hela Project. She talks bluntly and easily disregards social conventions, making her very unfriendly. Her absence of patriotism and distaste for authority landed her in hot waters in war-time Neo-Soviet Union.[3] According to herself, she only discovered she would make a bad mother after giving birth to Sana and neglected her,[14][28] though Sana did have some happy memories of walking through flower fields with her mother.[27] Paradoxically, Meitner went to extreme measures to resurrect Sana after her death.
Story Involvement
In 2064, Meitner resided at Avernus in the Dead Sea near Berlin. After Angelia's capture, she used her as a test subject and performed brain surgery on her.[29][30][31] She also made a T-Doll body for RPK-16, which was considered the most advanced body ever created, but RPK wasn't interested in using it and instead gave it to AK-12.[32] She successfully fled Avernus before it was destroyed at the conclusion of the Battle of the Dead Sea and reached Frankfurt to continue her experiments in Raunheim district.[33]
Since a key had already manifested in RPK-16, Laplace declared that she was close to performing her final experiment, Lunasia's resurrection,[34] but the loss of Avernus had placed a great strain on Paradeus' resources.[35] Laplace prepared multiple test subjects and confirmed that she was able to pull Lunasia's mind in them through Nirvana.[21] When a new 18th edition of Arthur Hume's Human Intelligence Research suddenly appeared, Laplace ordered to provide her the physical copy,[36] but it was eventually revealed to be a fake to distract Paradeus' attention.[33] As Laplace was transported to the White Zone of Frankfurt to perform the final surgery, the Commander's forces attacked,[37] and was funneled to a safe room in the Fasanerie palace with the help of Morridow, who colluded with the Commander to assassinate Laplace.[38] Her death was part of the deal made by William with Griffin Lyons to join the URNC,[39] planning to restart Laplace's experiments within a few months,[40] and would mark his full acquisition of the codename “William”.[23] The Commander's forces intercepted what they thought was Lunasia's vessel, but only found its cocoon.
Laplace was trapped in the safe room with Nele, a student of Gray who wanted to avenge her death and the use of her corpse as a Nyto. Though Nele held Laplace at gunpoint, she didn't plan to kill her, instead letting Amaris take revenge on her creator. Laplace argued that turning Gray into a Nyto was not a disrespect to her, but a boon, since she would be able to continue practicing medicine forever. Laplace expressed no remorse for the countless lives she had taken over the course of the Hela Project, saying it was the unavoidable cost of scientific progress and the logical continuation of natural selection. She however said that she didn't turn herself into a Nyto because only mortals should create immortals, or the immortals would eventually escape their role as tools.
Laplace contacted William to leave him with instructions on how to perform Lunasia's resurrection, considering him to fall short of the genius of Shaw, Persica, and herself. William confirmed that he had supported Laplace's assassination[41] to prove his own genius and resurrect Lunasia in a purer form,[42] but Laplace only cared that her project was seen through. Nele revealed that she had modified the Gray Nyto herself to lead the attack on Paradeus, and Laplace recognized Nele as her true successor rather than William. Laplace felt that Nele had enjoyed studying her work on Gray and shared her disregard for ethics, even if she denied it. When Laplace recited the password to the Hela project logs to pass her legacy to her, Nele shot her in panic and anger, but Laplace managed to recite the full password, while also pushing Nele on the same path as her since she had broken the Hippocratic Oath by shooting her. Amaris warned Nele that the fact that she insisted to meet with Laplace meant that she had hoped to find some redeeming quality in her, which would justify her past collaboration with Gray.[41]
| “ | What’s the difference between a med student and a serial killer? Little girl, the answer is—there’s no difference. The adrenaline and endorphins bring them the same joy. Knowledge is a curse. Talent is a curse. One day, you’ll admit… what you inherited from me is what you’ve been pursuing your whole life… — [43]

Access to Laplace's archives in Bee Sting was granted to Morridow by Nemhran shortly before her death.[44] After doubting her own motivations for a time, Nele renewed her dedication to saving lives instead of sacrificing them, intent on proving that Laplace was wrong about her.[39]
Alternate timelines
In an alternate timeline,[23] Angelia faced Meitner after she escaped the American troops during Couatl.[15] In 2061, she was attacked by Ramzan, her brother turned by Meitner into the cyborg Ganglati[45] (it's unclear if the two events happened in separate timelines or the same timeline).[23]
In another timeline mentioned by Lunasia, Laplace modified Amaris into the strongest T-Doll in existence, surpassing Shaw's AK-15, in order to eliminate Aliana.[23]

Trivia
- When RPK-16 temporarily became a Relic key and accessed Nirvana, she took the name Laplace's Demon to setup the coalescence of Lunasia in Tarot Paradise.[46]
- The boiler suit she wore in 2047 is identified as one of the suits used during the Holy Grail Project according to the event exclusive furniture “The Holy Grail”. Her chibi also appears on the furniture “Image of the Past” from the same event.
Notes
- ↑ Assuming Laplace arrived in Beslan the same year she left the US, and that A Life that has Yet to Bloom IV and A Life that has Yet to Bloom V occur the same year, Sana would have been born in 2041.
