Originally known as Helena D-68, one of the Helenas used by Paradeus remnants in Eastern Europe in 2074. Later renamed Melanie (梅兰妮) by the Commander.

Character Info

Melanie is essentially a more mature version of Helena O-43. She has the same psychic connection to ELIDs and other Helenas, but lacks her own protective equipment. She doesn't act on emotive impulse and talks normally compared to O-43's rudimentary grasp on language. Having been used as a cult icon by Paradeus, Melanie has a better understanding of the world than O-43 and stronger, albeit still naive, morals.

Story Involvement

D-68 was used by Paradeus in an isolated cultist village in the region between Odesa and Lviv. She was horrified by the experiments performed by Paradeus on the cultists, but was powerless to stop them. Statesec members infiltrated the community and managed to break her out of the labs hidden in the abandoned mining shafts, but were captured. D-68's psychic cries for help sent the artificial Boojum created by Paradeus into a frenzy, causing Mangi Security Service to be dispatched to contain it. They also reached Helena O-43 as she was being transported by drone to CHE-02,[1] and she immediately intervened and was absorbed by the Boojum. Impersonating O-43, D-68 guided the Commander into the lab to rescue her[2] but O-43's body was taken over by the “first Helena” and D-63 stole the Commander's gun in an attempt to kill her.[3] Thanks to Dandelion's precautions, the ex-Griffin Dolls of squads Monsoon and Zucchero intervened and secured both Helenas, broke through the Mangi forces and escaped to Zucchero's safehouse in CHE-02.[4] On the way back, D-68 warned the Commander not to let O-43 out of her box because she was too weak after having her body taken over.

In CHE-02, Springfield and Centaureissi took care of D-68, changed her hairdo and gave her some of Sharkry's clothes so she could be told apart from O-43. D-68 asked to leave, warning that the Commander was risking their life by protecting her, like the Statesec agents before them. The Commander and Colphne told her not to blame herself for murders done by Paradeus, and explained their motivations for doing so, both because of their duty to destroy Paradeus and their task to transport "Helena" to Lviv. D-68 explained the origins of Helenas and of the traitor “first Helena”, and Springfield suggested the Commander to give D-68 her own name and they chose “Melanie”.[1] After an informant of Zucchero warned them of incoming enemies, Springfield and Makiatto took charge of transporting O-43's box to Lviv, while the rest of the Dolls would bring back Melanie to the Elmo.[5]

Aboard the Elmo, Colphne watched over Melanie to continue her role as caregiver of Helena. Melanie was drawn to the mangled frame of Sextans?, causing the Boojum cells from her failed fusion experiment to repair her.[6]

Trivia

  • When giving Helena D-68 her new name, the Commander states that its meaning is “guardian of souls.” The name originates from Greek μέλας (mélas), meaning “black”, and the origins of the claimed meaning are unclear.[1]
