Cornelia Schaefer (高奈莉娅•舍夫尔), going by Nele (奈乐),[1] is a former Gray Institute of Biotechnology lab assistant. An admirer of Lady Gray, she joined the lab in order to work with her idol and find a cure to ELID, but became involved in the conspiracies of Paradeus after discovering how they had replaced Gray with an impersonator. During the Battle of Frankfurt, Nele's genius in biomechatronics was revealed, leading Laplace to designate her as her successor, though Nele rejected this title. Mia is her Doll bodyguard and friend.
Story Involvement
Nele is the granddaughter of the former Minister of Health of Germany, Herr Vogt, and comes from an influential family.[2] However, Nele's mother married a pauper against Vogt's orders, becoming a pariah in her own family.[3] Nele's mother had Nele promise to keep visiting her grandfather regardless, but their relationship became even more strained after the death of Nele's mother. Nele only remained friends with one member of her extended family, her cousin Meyer,[4] keeping in touch even after they attended different universities.[5]
Nele obtained the maximum score of 1.0 on her Abitur at the end of high school and was granted entry to the Heidelberg University without needing to make a donation, proving herself without the need for nepotism.[3] Nele joined the applied physics department, but she admired Professor Gray, a medical doctor, after reading her paper "A Discussion on the Medial Prefrontal Cortex and Its Impact on ASD". In her freshman year, she attended an open lecture by Gray titled “Functional Brain Networks in ASD”. Medical students in the packed amphitheater tried to make Nele leave, but Gray intervened, making a point to allow cross-curriculum attendance due to her connection with Martha Meitner, herself a successful doctor in both physics and medicine who helped the pauper Gray to break through in a field dominated by families of doctors. At the end of the lecture, Gray distributed badges shaped like medals as a reminder to the students that they'd need to think beyond the confines of societal rules to make scientific breakthroughs.[6]
At some point, Nele became friends with Constanze, and they ran experiments in labs they weren't authorized to use.[7]
Berlin events
After graduating, Nele submitted her resume many times before joining Gray's lab at Galatea Corporation in late 2063, working as a research assistant for the development of the Idunn serum, marketed as a cure for ELID.[8] However, Nele didn't get the opportunity to work closely with Gray, as she had started to take her distance from her own team due to being replaced by a Nyto clone.[9]
When the German government ordered to stop development of the serum in October 2064,[8] rioters attempted to storm the Galatea labs in Berlin, which had to be closed.[10] On impulse,[9] Nele broke in to gather her research materials and the Idunn prototypes, and was discovered by Stasi Agent J. J escorted her back to the building Nele claimed to live in and gave her his number, intending to use her as a Galatea insider.[1] As Mia drove Nele back to her actual apartment, they came across a group of refugees and Nele decided to use the Idunn prototype to save an ELID sufferer.[11] Soon after, the refugee was hospitalized and lost all cerebral activity,[12][13] a completely unknown side-effect. Nele was arrested and placed on house arrest. Acting without Stasi oversight, J briefly interrogated her and searched her background for any sign of collusion with Gray's terrorist activities.[8] The press leaked her identity and she became the target of death threats, forcing her to promise to assist J in his personal investigation in exchange for using a Stasi safe house.[9] J tasked Nele to investigate the routes of Galatea trucks used to transport Iaso's Boxes as well as the Neu-Tempelhof mansion found to be related to Paradeus.[14]
A few days later, Nele was able to return to her apartment safely and the Idunn team was briefly reassembled to announce its official disbandment, each member receiving a cushy severance package. Intending to prove Gray's innocence, Nele stole the badge of her superior, Professor Iverson, and copied files related to the person of interest Umruss and Gray's trips to Neu-Tempelhof. Her colleagues also revealed that the Idunn prototypes were produced after Gray abandoned the production of an ELID cure in May 2064[13] and had the entire staff replaced,[15] instead focusing on finding the most active antibodies during clinical trials on ELID-infected.[13] Nele continued her investigation effort against Mia's advice to understand why Gray had turned away from the ethics she previously defended[16] and to make amend for misusing the Idunn prototype.[17] Nele's intel helped the Stasi find Umruss[18] and the factories producing Iaso's Boxes.[17][15]

Sneaking out of her apartment to avoid Mia's watch, Nele returned to the lab again to copy more evidence from the computers, but ran into Gray who would be conducting exit interviews the next day. Nele bought time to finish the transfer by confronting Gray about her objectives. Gray claimed her previous views on ethics were merely PR, but Nele accused her of being an impostor[15] cloned using the Technical Theory of Biological Human Automation.[19] Gray had hired Nele expecting her not to question her work due to her empty resume, but prepared to kill her now that she was investigating.[15] Nele dropped the disk drive containing the evidence through a window into a bush bed and, noticing that a crowd had assembled outside after learning that Gray was in the building, pointed out that Gray wouldn't be able to hide the murder if she killed her on the spot. Gray relented and allowed Nele to leave.[19]
After falling into Paradeus' trap in the Iaso's Boxes factory, J realized that Nele was probably compromised too and drove to her apartment to find it in flames.[20] Regretting to have pushed Nele to endanger her life, on top of his recent failures, J started suffering from mental breakdown before Nele appeared, having been secured elsewhere by Mia because her apartment was previously hounded by reporters. After this incident, the Stasi officially placed Nele under witness protection.[19]
Frankfurt events
After the incident in Berlin, Nele had troubles finding work due to only having experience at Galatea, now an infamous name in her industry. Nele left Berlin and returned into her family in Frankfurt, but she was more concerned about getting revenge against Paradeus than her own future, to Mia's dismay.[4] Her goal was to clear Gray's name by revealing her impostor.[21] She tried to contact the Commander to obtain their support, unaware that they had been captured and reached Instructor Я instead. Following the advice of Lenny, who knew Mia and Nele, Я hid the Commander's absence from Nele, instead demanding that Nele support the Commander's troops during their operations in Frankfurt before they would consider her request. Я demanded that Nele obtain eight entry permits into the city and enter the White Zone to reconnoiter it, which would expose her to charges of treason.[4][2]
Nele visited her cousin Meyer, who had recently given birth and arranged for the permits, with Nele presenting the Dolls as her own bodyguards. Doing so, Nele felt that she was finally compromising with her decision to not rely on her family's influence. Meyer also insisted that Nele visits her grandfather for support to find a new job, and meet with her friend Hebe, a retired movie star who could be a matchmaker for Nele with postgrads from Heidelberg.[4] Hebe couldn't get Nele to talk much about her romantic inclinations, instead talking about her professional situation and bringing her to the White Zone. Hebe was in fact a Paradeus agent and had Nele's phone analyzed, but Nele had already scrubbed any data related to her connection with the Commander and the Stasi.[5]
When Nele visited her grandfather, he offered her a position as his representative for a pharmaceutical company in Munich, but Nele refused anything she would get through her family's status, saying that she only visited because her mother worried that Vogt would die without anyone wanting to see him without expecting something in return. After leaving, Nele ran into J, who was patrolling the White Zone, and had him show her around.[3] J offered to ask Shadowless to get Nele a job, but she didn't pay attention to their conversation, instead committing the area to memory. J eventually noticed what Nele was doing, but couldn't act on it before the Commander broke out of the house where Paradeus was keeping them prisoner. They knocked J out when he tried to apprehend them and Nele ran away in the Commander's vehicle,[22] helping them locate an evacuation point by blowing a hole through the Wiesbaden metro line.[23]
To allow Nele to get her revenge, the Commander provided her with the body of Gray recovered from the Battle of the Dead Sea, while Nele's friend Constanze got her a lab at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz,[7] though Nele didn't reveal what she would use it for.[21] J was kept prisoner at the apartment rented by Nele in Frankfurt, and he tried to dissuade her from her vengeance.[21][24] Combining Persica's integration of Hume's Human Intelligence Research with research from Shaw,[7] Lycoris, and the original Gray's work on the Evangel Axis,[25] and wearing the badge once given to her by Gray for reassurance about her choice, Nele started modifying the body of the Gray Nyto, with the help of Constanze who agreed to participate in the experiment. The operation started at 4:45 AM on 4 November 2064[6] and went on for about 48 uninterrupted hours.[26] The Commander dispatched SG Stevens M520Stevens M520Stevens M520 and Amaris to protect Nele during the operation and take custody of Gray after its completion, but they ended up acting as surgical assistants. When Amaris complained that she wasn't contributing to the fight against Paradeus in this position, Nele corrected that her operating room was in fact the current frontline of the Battle of Frankfurt.[25]

After the modified Gray attacked Paradeus as they were transferring Laplace from Raunheim to the White Zone, the Commander's troops funneled Laplace into a safe house at the Schloss Fasanerie palace, where Laplace became locked with Nele pointing a Makarov gun at her and interrogating her about her reasons for replacing Gray with a Nyto. Nele never intended to use the gun, planning to let Amaris kill Laplace once she had heard her explanations so she would get her own revenge. Laplace denied feeling any guilt about replacing Gray, arguing that even natural progress requires sacrifices and that she had in fact helped Gray's ideal to become a savior of all human life by making her into an immortal genius surgeon, while respecting her by only using DNA from the original Gray in the process without intermixing. When Nele revealed that she had modified the Gray Nyto, Laplace noticed the badge designed by Gray and herself and, claiming to recognize this moment as a karmic consequence, designated Nele as her true successor, since she considered William to be too incompetent. Though Nele claimed she was only motivated by hatred and disgust for Paradeus, Laplace insisted Nele had found great pleasure in operating on the Nyto and learning from her creation, and that being motivated by talent and passion for the craft made her less like William and Gray and more like Laplace herself.
Considering that she would also reach a form of immortality by passing her legacy onto Nele, Laplace started reciting the password to the files of the Hela Project, voicing it in full even as Nele shot her in rage and panic. By doing so, Laplace also caused Nele to hypocritically break the Hippocratic Oath she had accused Laplace of violating. Amaris didn't mind that she didn't get to kill Laplace herself in the end, but warned Nele that just like her idol Gray had admired Laplace, Nele had interrogated her because she was also trying to find something to admire in her.[27]
After Frankfurt
After Task Force DEFY became independent from Statesec, Nele created Voymastina's new combat exoskeleton.[28]
