Background

The people who know J personally call him "Kevin",[2][3] and when he began his clandestine life after the Battle of Frankfurt, he used the identity of "Kevin Hartmann".[4] However, his name as stored in the Stasi's internal files is Julian Jolivet (朱利安·姚立维).

J was born in Offenburg in 2041. For the duration of World War Three, his family lived in Paris and began using his mother's name, who was of French descent, to escape scrutiny. J became fluent in French thanks to this experience. Back in Offenburg after the war, J became a popular playboy during his school years.[1] He graduated from the Humboldt Gymnasium of Eberswalde.[5]

On Europe Liberation Day (9 May[6]) in 2056, J's classmates were involved in demonstrations demanding the acceleration of Yellow Zone resettlement policies. J was arrested by the Stasi's riot police as he tried to join his classmates. Over the next days, the demonstrations turned violent due to terrorist involvement, and 17 of J's classmates died, including his first girlfriend Lilia Lorenz. During this experience, J received some moral support from Stasi agent Kain Schwaben. Afterwards, J changed his careers prospects to focus on law enforcement, eventually joining the Stasi's university program.

He passed the Stati's initial selection and political review in 2061. His recruitment evaluation noted that he was of average physical fitness and combat skills, but excelled at social engineering and French and was recommended for the Special Reconnaissance Section. His received his training in Berlin in 2062 and joined the Domestic Affairs Department of the Main Directorate for Reconnaissance. He joined the Special Reconnaissance Section and participated in Operation Demeter in 2064.[1]

His mentor in the Stasi was Uhrig, the mother of Light and Shadowless until her death.[7] Q then became J's mentor.[8] J made a particularly embarrassing display of himself when he rejected was he thought were romantic advances from Q, thinking they were talking privately but actually within earshot of a conference room full of department directors,[9] earning him the nickname "the Narcissistic Agent".[8]

Character Info

Unlike K, J is an easy-going womanizer who even gave nicknames to Task Force DEFY. He believes that his attitude is more suited to the work of a spy since unlike K, he doesn't look like a spy.[10]

He was forced into a more serious attitude as he faced more failures and deaths as the price for his involvement with Angelia and Paradeus,[7] and by the time if the Battle of Frankfurt, he had reconsidered whether there was any meaning in being an agent.[11]

Story Involvement

Bremen and Berlin

J became involved in the investigations regarding Paradeus in Bremen in September 2064 when he rescued Angelia during the incident in the Flora Institute.[12] Angelia insisted to conduct her own investigations and disrupted J's work due to her head-on approach. Since J worked with K, Angelia considered him one of the few people who were clear of suspicions of being a Paradeus agents and shared her findings with him.[13] Despite his wounds from the Bremen Refugees Camp riots, J was transferred to Berlin with his subordinate Light to assist Angelia's investigations for the Earl.[14][15]

J was prevented to investigate the circumstances of Light's death by the new Stasi director Romy Riefenstahl,[16] but J continued regardless and even recruited former Galatea Technology Corporation member Nele as an informant.[17] Because of his insubordination, Riefenstahl assigned Doll agent Mona as J's supervisor,[3] but she failed to rein J in. Eventually, J got Mona and a cohort of loyal Stasi agent killed by Bramedb after being baited by RPK-16 into investigating a German Minister of Defense plant producing Iaso's Boxes for Paradeus.[18] The massacre was intended to force the Stasi to hide both the disaster and their involvement with Paradeus. J was about to commit suicide under Bramedb's influence when the Commander intervened.[19] Shortly after, J suffered a short mental breakdown when he witnessed the fire Paradeus had started in Nele's apartment and he thought she had been killed due to his actions. However, Nele had anticipated the attempts on her life and avoided her apartment, which led K to judge her smarter than J during her deposition.[20]

On 20 October,[21] K and J tracked down and recruited the former American spec-ops Doll Amaris for the Stasi.[22][23]

Frankfurt

Three days after Amaris' recruitment, Riefenstahl assembled all Stasi special agents in Frankfurt, including K, J and their Doll team.[24] Riefenstahl put K, J and Q in charge of various data processing missions which bored J.[9] Moreover, he was prevented from investigating the troubling events that later led to the Battle of Frankfurt.[25] He was assigned to patrol duty in the White Zone when the mission to break the Commander out of Paradeus custody occurred. He first met by chance with Nele, who asked him to show her around the White Zone since she had been sent by AR-18 to recon the area, but J quickly realized what she was doing. When the Commander broke out of the house they were held in with the capture Lunasia, J's first instinct was to detain them, but he was instead knocked out and captured by the Dolls rushing to the Commander's help.[26]

J was kept prisoner in Nele's apartment under Mia's watch, and he tried to talk Nele out of the many risks she was taking to avenge Gray, fearing she would die from getting involved in dangerous matters like Light[27] and Uhrig.[11] J was eventually handed back to the Stasi when the Commander allied with Riefenstahl to root out Paradeus' control over the German government.[28][29]

During the Battle of Frankfurt, J helped the Commander locate the Iaso's Boxes hidden in the city to contain the damage caused by Paradeus.[11] After the Coronation Storm massacre ended, the Commander warned J that Nele was in danger after she publicized the continued use of Paradeus technology by the newly proclaimed URNC, and he joined Amaris in helping Nele escape the Stasi's hunt. J was willing to defy the Stasi since he was already considering abandoning his career and K had been killed during the battle.[30] Berezovich Kryuger procured new identities for Nele and J, who from then on used the name Kevin Hartmann.[31]

The Organization

By 2074, Nele and Kevin had joined Mikhail Tsvigun's organization and acted as a support team for Task Force DEFY.[32] He was on-site during the incident in Lviv in November 2074,[33] and airdropped Nele's "Sinbreaker" mech to allow Voymastina to beat Igla.[34]
