The Varjagers (瓦良格帮) are an organization of bandits active in the contamination zones of Eastern Europe since 2066.[1] Wearing similar uniforms (gas masks, helmets and heavy protective suits) and well-armed, including assault mechs starting 2070, they specialize in cruel looting raids, but the URNC hasn't taken action against them since they rarely target purified regions.[2] They mostly attack Yellow Zone settlements and convoys,[3] and sometimes the Intercontinental Railway.[4]

The Varjagers were originally a multitude of bandit groups who became organized under a single leader, though their structure remains loose.[3] The overall leader of the Varjagers is unknown, known leaders include Berserl (deceased), Ravn (deceased) and Glasir.[5] They are prime targets for bounty hunters[6] and are known to both cooperate with and attack Underground Brokers.[7] It seems the only settlements they won't attack are the contamination sects.[8] In 2074, a notable change took place in the organization of Varjagers: their movements became more coordinated and their looting strategies more complex, like using underground information network to identify profitable targets and sending covert spies to scout out settlements.[9]

Their name is derived from the Varangians, a medieval Viking group, and the names of their units are often derived from Norwegian words or words from other North Germanic languages (in the English translation only).
