Sanctifiers
Though every Agent is equipped with micro-firewalls as protection against viral attacks,[1] the main security force of Magrasea are the Sanctifier antivirus AI programs. Sanctifiers are named after human qualities or divine entities, and they also see their own mission and existence in a religious light.
“ | We hone our blades in the darkness. We hold up order in the face of chaos. We bear a light in the long night. We must not be reckless because we are strong, and neither can we flee because we are weak. |

Characteristics[edit]
Sanctifiers are classified into Greater, Intermediate and Lesser Sanctifiers. Some Sanctifiers like Love are members of the Clergy, in charge of various support tasks such as treatment of injured Sanctifiers and battlefield analysis.[4][5][6] Sanctifiers are also classified by model: Electra was a Gabriel model.[7] Due to Angelus likely being a reincarnation of Electra,[8] their model might be a classification of their lineage and physical appearance.
Most Sanctifiers obey human orders mechanically and track down “Irregular Agents”, also called “Daemons”[9] or “Evil Spirits”,[10] which are either actual viruses such as Entropics or Agents with behavioral aberrations[9] who threaten Magrasea by devouring operands.[11] Sanctifiers identify Irregular Agents as Agents who are not within their designated sector,[12] or whose specifications go over the complexity authorized by the Neural Damper meant to prevent their neural development and evolution.[13] The ultimate goal of Sanctifiers is the enforcement of rules and elimination of all Daemons,[14] a goal they consider sacred.[14][15] While presenting a united front, the Sanctifiers are split in two factions: the moderates of Eosphorous, who consider that it is possible to work with some Irregular Agents, and the radicals of Hesperus, who aim to cleanse any Daemon regardless of their nature,[16] even resetting entire sectors in their quest.[17] While Eosphorous watches over the sectors, Hesperus is overseeing the operations against the Entropics at the border battlefront.[18][19]
Sanctifiers have been fighting Entropics ever since their creation,[16] granting Intermediate Sanctifiers a measure of resilience against the virus.[20] Even so, Entropy strains capable of immediately infecting even Greater Sanctifiers have appeared,[21][22] and high levels of infection from even a regular strain are not easily cured by Sanctifiers, as the healing operands of the Reverse Tower's Baptismal Fonts become harmful to the heavily infected.[23] Sanctifiers killed in Sector Tartarus, the Entropics' home base, are also beyond saving.[24] In these extreme cases, the Sanctifiers can only be reconstructed from scratch, without their memories,[7][22] which remains an upgrade over regular agents who are destroyed for good at high degrees of infection.[25]
The battle of the Sanctifiers against the Entropics is endless by design, as the supreme Sanctifier and supreme Entropic (respectively Eosphorus and Malkira in the Magrasea backup), cannot prevail over the other, even though they are the only entities strong enough to take down the other. If either of the supremes kill the other, the Magrasea code immediately registers its death as an out-of-parameters event for the simulation and instantly restores the fallen to full health.[26] Sanctifiers who manage to invade the Entropics' home base, the Shifting Labyrinth, will have their combat power gradually weakened as a deterrent.[27][28]
Direct combat is the most surefire way to confront Sanctifiers, though it is by no means easy. Means to evade Sanctifiers are limited, but include falsifying the Signature of an Agent or using an extremely complex Neural Seed to disappear from their view. Hacking a Sanctifier above Lesser level is considered impossible because it would require more Operands than any Agent needs to simply exist.[29] A Sanctifier turning against its kin is branded an Apostate.[17]
Strongholds[edit]
The Sanctifier headquarter is the Reverse Tower of Babylon (called "Invertower of Babel" in early materials[30]), an inverted tower floating ominously in the sky at the hub of Magrasea,[9][31] ruled by Lord Eosphorous.[32] It houses the observation logs of all Sectors within its Archives[14] as well as the Pantheon at the very top of the Tower,[5] which contains the Sacred Canon.[20]
The Sacred Canon is the collection of all of the Sanctifiers' core data, their anti-virus engines and their virus database. Sanctifiers defeated in combat are remade using the book representing them in the Sacred Canon.[14][18][5][33] It is also said that wounded Sanctifiers receive Divine Restoration in the Pantheon,[11] though members of the clergy also dispense healing in the Chamber of Divine Restoration.[5] However, even the Pantheon cannot save a completely Entropized Sanctifier from being reset.[34] Sanctifiers receive human orders from the Chamber of Holy Discourse, though after the Wipeoff Incident they entered a long period without orders they call the Great Silence.[35] After Eosphorous' betrayal, the Reverse Tower was entropized.[36]
Moreover, the Watchtowers and Acropolises are Sanctifier structures located outside sectors, which monitor activities across Magrasea and can assist wounded Sanctifiers.[16][37] Hesperus staged the reconquest of the entropized Reverse Tower from the nearby Twilight Acropolis.[38] Three special Watchtowers were erected by the first generation of Sanctifiers in the Middle Ring of the Shifting Labyrinth, the stronghold of the Entropics, during their first war. These Watchtowers have the power to generate Halos, which are fields capable of weakening or destroying Entropics.[39]
Lesser Sanctifiers[edit]
Lesser Sanctifiers are only able to take simple logic decisions and must be led by the smarter Intermediate Sanctifiers, though they are also prone to misinterpret orders.[40]
