This article is for the successor personality emulation of UMP40. For the original, permanently destroyed Doll, read UMP40/Story.
Introduction
Lainie is a virtual personality created by the Parapluie virus in the Neural Cloud of SMG UMP45UMP45UMP45 (later called Leva). By absorbing 45's memories of SMG UMP40UMP40UMP40, the personality became a "ghost" closely imitating the original UMP40, causing her to stop acting as a virus and instead becoming 45's ally.
The emulated personality was simply called "UMP40" for ten years, but was given the name Lainie when she became independent and was transferred into her own Doll body.
Like UMP40, Lainie radiates positive energy and supports others with her encouragements. She's devoted to Leva and Lenna, calling them her family. Originally confined to 45's Level III, Lainie had very little to do or see and was often bored to death, treasuring every time 45 came to talk to her. As a result, she's very eager to experience the real world for herself.
Biography
Emergence

During the events of KCCO's betrayal of Griffin & Kryuger during the Great Retreat, UMP45 was hit by a tank shell while shielding AR HK416HK416HK416 and her mangled body was recovered by AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 and sent to be repaired by Dier. During her agony, 45 accessed more memories of UMP40 due to her self-diagnostic program stabilizing her neural cloud, but she couldn't remember her name and the significance of their common past.[1] Despite Sier and Dier's protests and the risk of repairing her body instead of transferring her neural cloud in a new one, 45 insisted to retain her body and her consciousness was sent to Level III for the repairs.[2] There, she met and remembered 40 who reminded her of their promises to get better bodies to survive, but 45 asked her not to make her waver in her determination to keep her body. 40 then embraced her, telling that she knew how hard she was working to keep a strong facade and shoulder her responsibilities, and that nobody but her could understand her deeply and know about her inner kindness. 40 encouraged her to let go of her mask for a while, and 45 gave in and let herself cry.
45 understood that she had killed 40 but wished deeply that she would remain at her side, and assumed that this vision was due to her subconscious being able to create a convincing simulation of 40 from her personal memories due to how similar their neural cloud was. The virtual 40 explained that the earlier resurfacing memories were due to the weakening of the safeguard program leaking memories and data sealed at Level III. 45 then explained that she could not yet fulfill 40's promise to get a stronger body because these memories of her would not be transferred during the backup of her neural cloud, and that she needed to hold on to them until she avenged 40's death by killing the culprits behind the Butterfly Incident. In order to let free of the past, 45 promised 40 that she would bury her own body, and 40's last specks of existence, once her goal had been accomplished.[3] From there, 45's reconciliation with the world and herself would become the embodiment of 40's ideals. 45 considered this new outlook to be the first step in the change 40 wanted for her.[4]
45's Ally
In Tallinn, 45's investigation of Parapluie and its link with the OGAS AI within M4's neural cloud led to a realization that the persona stuck within her Level III was in fact a weak simulation of an OGAS AI that failed to mature due to her low neural cloud capacity. Without the resources to develop freely, the foreign AI unknowingly took on 40's persona using 45's memories as a basis.[5]
During the Paldiski Incident, M16A1 and 45 hacked each other simultaneously to steal information from each other about the Butterfly Incident, forcing 45 to periodically run simulations of their last fight. After meeting the juvenile Nyto Anna, UMP45 was tasked with relieving the other juvenile Nytos from Elisa's electronic attack, and called upon UMP40 for help. While the weak OGAS was able to connect to Elisa, she was immediately taken over by the much-stronger OGAS signal, allowing Elisa to communicate directly to 45. In the end, Elisa explained her view of the Butterfly Incident along with her intentions to 45 and withdrew her attack, warning 45 not to oppose her.[6]
