IOP Wiki:How To/Multi-language articles

Technical implementation for multilanguage support is in beta. We accept contributions but implementation is subject to change in the future.

IOP Wiki is primarily written in global English. We currently also support articles in the following languages:

• French (FR)
• German (DE)
• Indonesian (ID)
• Italian (IT)
• Polish (PL)
• Russian (RU)
• Spanish (ES)
• Ukrainian (UK)
• Vietnamese (VI)

Like the rest of the Wiki, new articles must be created by members with an account, but any visitor can contribute to an existing article, even without an account.

Supported article

In the beta phase, only story recap, lore and character story articles (NPCs and story subpages of playable characters) are supported. This choice is based on the interest expressed by users in a December 2025 poll.

Support is achieved in beta phase by the inclusion of Template:Multilang on specific articles and inside Template:Lore, Template:NavboxLore, Template:NPC and Template:CharacterTabber.

Navigating multi-language articles

Multilanguage navigation is not supported on mobile during the beta phase.

Translated articles are hosted as subpages of the main article, which is in English. For example, the Italian translation of GFL2 Story/Summary is hosted at GFL2 Story/Summary/Translated/IT.

On all supported articles, a list of links to subpages is available on the top-right side of the article, next to the article's title. If the link is red, the translated article doesn't exist yet. If the link is yellow, clicking it will take you to the subpage of this article in the associated language.

There is no guarantee that a translated article will be up-to-date with the main English one. This is entirely dependent on the activity of the contributors in this specific language.

Translating

If you want to start translating an article, you should first check if the translated article has already been started. If the link to the language you want to work on is red, it means you'll be the first to work on this translation. You will need to have an account to create the translated article.

The goal of article translation is to match the format and information existing in the English version of the article, which is the most accessible version. While a translation can be left incomplete, content must not be intentionally removed, and especially not references and footnotes. If you have information that isn't in the English article, you should not only add it to the translated article but also on the English article, in order to benefit as many visitors as possible.

Don't submit Machine Translations (MTL)

Visitors who are content with using MTL (including AI translation) are already doing so without the need for sub-pages. The point of the translated articles is that they have been reviewed for reading quality by humans, using the preferred lexicon of the franchise as decided by the fans for the fans.

Links

Internal links should point to the English version of target articles, so that visitors still have a chance to read on the topic even if a translation isn't available. The text of the link itself can be translated to match the rest of the translated text, like so: [[OGAS|ОГАС]].

Templates

Templates can be translated in their own sub-pages by copying their original code. Translated template also need to be maintained by contributors of the target language in the long term and won't necessarily be up-to-date with the English version.

Lexicon harmonization

The official languages of the Girls' Frontline franchise are Standard Chinese (its original language), Traditional Chinese, Korean, Japanese and English. This means that there is no official translation for key terms in other languages. Contributors are free to use their preferred translations (or not translate at all and keep the official English version), and debate with other contributors if the need arises. Specific cases such as the how to keep the Commander's gender ambiguous in text (if possible at all) is left to the contributor's discretion. Key terms for all languages may be added to the General Namelist and discussed in IOP Wiki talk:Guideline/General Namelist.

Moderation

Our policies and guidelines are applicable to every language version of an article. Persistent minor offenses or blatant misbehavior will result in a ban.

Since we don't have moderators for every language, validation times for translations will be longer, as we'll do our best to verify that the translation doesn't contain banned material. We're open to submissions for the role of moderator from active contributors.

Keep in mind that Girls' Frontline is a franchise from Mainland China and may make narrative choices that are politically charged in your target language. The goal of the Wiki is to cover the franchise's content in its original form and without added censorship. As already explained above, no content from the original article should be removed, even if you personally object to it.

Miscellaneous questions=

Can you add a new language to the list of supported languages?

The original list of 9 languages was selected based on the interest demonstrated by the community in a December 2025 poll.

If a group of contributors comes forward with a proposal to add a new language and the intent to maintain it, administrators will consider adding it.

Why don't you support other languages the games are officially available into?

Chinese, Korean and Japanese are not supported by IOP Wiki as to not undermine existing efforts from other Wikis in these languages.

Will every article get translated in my language?

Probably not. Beyond the question of supporting more categories of article, there's a limited number of Girls' Frontline fans and even more limited number of fans willing to maintain a Wiki, so it's unlikely that every article will be translated and the translation maintained in the future.

The point of this feature (and really, the point of IOP Wiki) is not to be complete, because completion is unachievable in the first place on a general encyclopedia, there will always be more details to add and topics to cover. The point is to offer fans a structured platform to contribute to the community, and help people around the world to discover Girls' Frontline.

Why don't you support translations with [implementation idea]?

Consider that we're a small Wiki with a minimal administrative staff and limited number of contributors. Technical implementations with signficant hosting or maintenance overhead are outside of our scope.

Specifically, using mw:Extension:Translate or sub-sites with interwiki links has already been rejected.
