Weapon Background
The M16 rifle, officially designated Rifle, Caliber 5.56 mm, M16, is the US military adaptation of the Armalite AR-15 rifle, Colt model name for M16 rifle was model 604. In 1964, M16 entered American military service and the following year was deployed for jungle warfare operations during the Vietnam War. Soon enough several problems were found with the rifle, the feedbacks from the US soldiers pushed further development on the rifle. An initial experimental XM16E1 (Colt model 603) was deployed for testing. After another round of live actions and feedbacks, the design on the final production model M16A1 was finalised in 1967. By the event Tet offensive carried out by Communist factions of Vietnam in 1968, XM16E1 and M16A1 were more widely deployed among US forces. In 1969 M16A1 replaced the M14 rifle to become the U.S. military's standard service rifle.
The M16 rifle was also the first instance of .223 (5.56mm) calibre intermediate rifle cartridge deployed by NATO nations in military offenses, designed especially for the Armalite AR-15 rifle. The .223 Remington cartridge developed since 1957, would accompany the newly adopted M16 rifle into the oversea conflict. This munition would be fired from a 20 inch barrel with a 1:12 twist rate, from the M16s rifles used in Vietnam.
M16A1 rifle classifies as a 5.56mm calibre, air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine-fed assault rifle, with a rotating bolt. The rifle uses the direct-impingement from Eugene Stoner's AR-15 rifle. Several improvements were made from the original model 604 rifles, such as the redesigned bolt carrier, the introduction of a forward-assist, a new bird-cage style flash suppressor. Other ergonomic features were also added, such as the slightly larger hollowed out fiberglass buttstock for cleaning kits, grooving ribs on the receiver preventing magazine release being accidentally pressed and covering newly designed 'take-down screw' spring mechanisms. The most important change was the chrome plated bore as well as bolt carrier, after changing out the bore assembly the rifle's malfunction rate declined and the early problems experienced by M16 subsided, improving the overall performance of the rifle in tropical environments.
Other features on the rifle includes the rear aperture fixed on the carrying handle, can be flipped and adjusted between two sizes, front iron sight is fixed on the post above the barrel and in front of the triangular hand guard, mounting of optics would have to be directly attached to the carrying handle. Selective fire handle can be found on the left side of the receiver, toggles between semi and fully automatic fires. M16A1 rifle was widely deployed with the 20-round capacity aluminium box magazine, however a 30-round capacity magazine were also developed and deployed in limited numbers by the final stage of Vietnam conflict, eventually US military would standardise the 30-round capacity magazines for all servicing M16 rifles and make it into the classification of NATO STANAG magazine. The 40mm M203 grenade launcher introduced in 1969 was also designed to be permanently fixed under the triangular hand guard unit.
Eventually A1 models would retire from the role of the standard service rifle, M16A1 was replaced by the M16A2 model by 1980. Retired surplus units would be sold to both domestic firearm enthusiasts market and foreign exports. Many other nations would also use M16A1 rifles as their standard service rifle.
Character Design
M16A1 is designed by the same artist as most of the AR Squadron, UmiNeko (海猫络合物), who also illustrated AR M4A1M4A1M4A1,AR M4 SOPMOD IIM4 SOPMOD IIM4 SOPMOD II and SMG RO635RO635RO635. M16's unique side bang colour is orange. M16 is depicted as the oldest out of all the AR team members, her deeper and more mature voice, the way she looks out for her younger sisters, and the way she acts.
As a core character a certain degree of lore and character settings were put into her designs, which the artist UmiNeko shared on the official artbook of Girls Frontline:
A siscon. In tight of the period when the original design was completed and saw use, I found suitably down-to-earth (or perhaps drab) elements and put them together.
M16A1's clothes are more sensible compared to the other team members. Even her coat would just be a raincoat if she put it on properly. During the design phase, I decided on making her a mature, straightforward big sister type. She's the one who keeps the team together and no matter how much pain she goes through (or will go through), she needs to let the others see the happy side of her. That's probably why so many dolls regard her as an emotional safe harbor for them.
She deliberately left her facial scar and eyepatch unfixed, in order to remind herself of the past and to keep herself alert. On that note, I've been meaning to draw prequel art of her when I find the time. This also means that only the M16A1 of this story has those scars. Other M16s' eyes should be fine.
As for what's in the box, it contains several accessories she can choose from.[1]
Despite holding the standard Vietnam-era M16A1 in her CG art, her chibi sprite's M16 appears more like a modern AR-15 based carbines with the different parts, such as the 2nd/3rd generation collapsible stock of early AR-15 carbines, the upper receiver of an M16A1 (as noted by the lack of a brass deflector), the lower receiver of the XM16E1 prototype (as noted by the lack of fencing around the magazine release), the circular handguard of the CAR15, and the 14.5 inch barrel of the M4A1 rather than the 20 inch barrel of standard M16s. This is likely a mistake.

Trivia
- Her eyepatch and headset are likely a reference to Naked Snake, the main protagonist from the acclaimed Metal Gear Solid 3 game of the Metal Gear franchise.
- Both the official manga and the mobile game have M16 shouldering her weapon on her right side and aiming down her sights despite having an eyepatch over her right eye. This is likely another reference to Naked Snake who often shoots while aiming down the sights with his eyepatch. The same could be said about her in-game Chibi-sprites which also shoulders the gun on her right side despite having her right eye covered by her eye-patch.
- The official manga of Girls' Frontline depicts M16 as being ambidextrous.
- M16A1 shares the same headset that SMG PP-19PP-19PP-19 and SMG SCWSCWSCW wear, which is the MSA Sordin Supreme.
- M16A1 having two 'Doll' equipment slots means she is the only AR able to equip both an exo-skeleton and an armor plate at the same time, as you cannot equip the two of the same series of equipment at the same time.
- This also makes M16A1 the only AR doll in the game not being able to equip an optic.
- In Vietnam War, some of M16A1 Re-Tooled it's magazine chamber to feed 30-rounds AK-47/Type 56 magazine in order to increase its reliability and additional firepower. Later the same method was applied to SR-47, a modified version of AR-15 that able to feed AK-47 mags, while had been rejected in U.S Military Service due the several major flaws.
