Dmitry (德米特里), nicknamed Dima, is a major NPC in Aphelion, featured in chapters 9 and 10 of Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium.

Background

Dmitry is a Neo-Soviet Union patriot and a former follower of General Carter. Extremely patriotic, he mourned the loss of the Neo-Soviet military culture after its integration in the URNC,[1] and sought to survive with his old comrades and fulfill his oath to the land and people of his former country.[2]

Feeling betrayed by the android units under his orders when their authorizations were taken over by the URNC, Dmitry hates Dolls, considering them to be machines merely imitating humans and unable to think or act freely. He eventually was forced to admit that exceptions like Klukai existed.[3]

Story Involvement

Dmitry fought for the Neo-Soviet Union during World War Three alongside Nikolai. Both shared a deep patriotism,[4] reached the rank of Warrant Officer (准尉) and admired the KCCO and General Carter, aligning with his "hardliner" faction and opposing postwar Rossartrist influence on the NSU until Carter and the KCCO fell from grace in Moscow in 2064.[1] In 2067, Dmitry and his men, including Larion and Ivan, were reassigned to the 775th Railway Defense Forces of section W_2067_0341 of the Great Wall Railway,[3] effectively exiled. Dmitry was shocked when the Automatons under his orders no longer recognized him after their authorizations were transferred to the URNC, and developed a deep grudge against all androids.[1]

At the end of 2067, the men in W_2067_0341 suffered from an epidemic of the contagious HFRS Virus, but Dmitry refused to let the section's Dolls assist in medicla duties, fearing the consequences if they betrayed them. Dmitry only relented after one of his comrades, Alexey Balabanov, presented him with Nadiya, a medical Doll he claimed to have found, whose expertise was praised by his head medic Allen Koehler. While the epidemic subsumed, W_2067_0341 soon suffered a devastating attack from Varjagers after it was found that Nadiya had been smuggling equipment out and Varjager troops in under the pretense of dumping contaminated medical supplies. Dmitry's hatred of Dolls was reaffirmed and he refused to consider the suspicions of the URNC's investigation board that Nadiya was in fact acting under Alexey's orders.[5]

In 2068, Dmitry was demoted to First Sergeant (大士) for illegally retaining confiscated property.[3] In 2074, Dmitry led the 3762nd Platoon of the 7th Environmental Survey Corps of the Neo-Soviet Union District Environmental Purification Project under the URNC Contamination Zone Management and Recovery Administration,[6] in Western Slovakia.[7] Originally assigned as Railway Guards, the platoon was reassigned to Survey Corps duties[8] due to the lack of manpower and progress on the section of this section of the Great Wall Railway.[9] Severely underequipped, they scrounged up equipment from various groups[10] and received the support of local Mangi Security Service forces.[11] Dmitry kept Neo-Soviet military traditions alive in the platoon, like military march songs.[12]

During their investigation work, one of the platoon's drones attacked H.I.D.E. 404, causing a short skirmish until both sides identified themselves.[6] Putting his hatred of Dolls in full display, Dmitry demanded compensation for the loss of automatons during the fight, and Klukai offered to repay the platoon by escorting them to their next investigation area.[13] Despite their bad first impression, 404 answered the 3762nd's distress signal after they were attacked by the Terrorhorn Chimera Boojum, succeeding in wounding the creature. Despite the increased danger level of the region, the platoon's Warrant Officer ordered them to continue their investigations. In the Boojum's flesh, Dmitry found dog-tags[14] of the 1364th Platoon, including Nikolai's.[1] 404 was attached to the platoon by NOMFA in order to lead their own investigations on Paradeus' presence in the area.[9]

The 3762nd and 404 found a jeep containing corpses of the 1364th, all possessing a map with encrypted coordinates.[1] The 1364th had been wiped out by Blusphere of the Girard Group in her efforts to conceal Paradeus' local experiments, and as the 3762nd and 404 continued the investigations, she sent the Mangi troops under her orders to eliminate them while simultaneously jamming their transmissions so they couldn't leak any information.[15] After losing his comrade Ivan while attempting to lose the Mangi pursuers, Dmitry realized that the coordinates found with the 1364th soldiers were encrypted using Nikolai's personal cipher, based on Moscow's coordinates. This led them to an old sanatorium built inside a salt mine north of Jahodná.[7] Inside, they found the Boojum and killed it, and Dmitry carved out of the corpse a box containing the chip holding the results of Nikolai's investigations on Paradeus.[16]

Keenly aware of the 3762nd's low chances of survival, Dmitry designed Operation Smoke Signal, where his men would confront the Mangi forces and enable 404 to escape with the evidence to bring the culprits to justice.[17] When Blusphere offered to save the lives of his men in exchange for surrendering the evidence, he refused,[3] and sacrificed the batteries powering up their radiation suits so 404 could power their experimental gun and blast a way out of the mines. Though Klukai couldn't understand how Dmitry could ignore human self-preservation, she respected his determination and they shared a final handshake.[2]

Mangi's assault quickly overran the 3762nd and Blusphere captured Dmitry and his remaining men, interrogating them to obtain 404's location. Blusphere attempted to make Dmitry speak by executing his men and promising to let him go alive, but Dmitry and Larion attacked her. The 3762nd stalled long enough for the natural gas remaining in the sanatorium's pipes network to gather into the room, and when Dmitry threw Nikolai's dogtags at one of the pipes, the sparks created a powerful explosion that killed all humans in the mines,[18] and grievously injured Blusphere.[19]

Klukai ultimately failed to complete Operation Smoke Signal when Blusphere, after being taken down by the Elmo Dolls, emitted an EMP that destroyed Nikolai's data. 404 carried Dmitry's spirit by remembering the Neo-Soviet military songs of the 3762nd.[20]
