Appearances
Goliaths first appear in Deep Dive and make a reappearance in Singularity, as well as a cameo in Isomer as "abandoned Goliaths" that can be used to alter the map. Goliaths also make their presence known in Chapter 11.
Gameplay
Essentially acting as a damage check, Goliaths are slow-floating units that will explode upon contact after a 1 second delay. The resulting explosive damage will either critically damage an echelon or put them out of commission. The simplest way to clear them is to simply output enough damage to defeat them before they can reach any T-Dolls. Since, these units move predictably in a straight line, easy actions such as repositioning an echelon unit out of a Goliaths' pathing or using stuns and slows to stall any collisions, can be an effective strategy for Commanders with weaker team compositions.
The Red Goliaths (Goliath+) however, have extremely high health and are not feasible to kill... using any traditional means. More often than not, you wont have any need to directly engage Red Goliaths, but in the event that you HAVE to engage them, its still possible to defeat them by utilizing accurately designed "bomb-defuser" squads. Commanders are able to forego any roundabout map routing and clear them head on. Using the Goliath+s' own destructive nature against themselves, force shields (such as, SMG ThompsonThompsonThompson, SMG MP5MP5MP5, and SMG G36CG36CG36C being the most commonly used) are able to negate incoming damage to zero while, simultaneously using the Goliaths' self destruction to clear the battle. This is a strategy that can be difficult for newcomers as it requires precise timing, kiting, and a fairly flexible armory of T-Dolls to pull off.
Echelon Requirements:
- A Force Shield unit is required, as they can grant themselves a barrier with a Defense value of 9999 to easily tank the blast. As Goliaths and many other enemies do not possess a Defence Piercing stat, all damage dealt to these force shielding using dolls will result in doing 0 damage while their skill is active.
- Consequently, the Force Shield skill has an 8 second initial cool down, which is far too long and will result in a defeat if left unanswered.
- Additional units must be able to delay the Goliaths until the Force Shield(s) are ready to deploy. This can be done in numerous ways, from using shotgun knock-back to AR ADSADSADS and HG M950AM950AM950A slows/stuns, however the standard way is to deploy as many flash and smoke grenades as are needed.
This means a standard formation will have a force shield standing on tile 4, and two to three smoke grenadiers and one or two flash grenadiers standing on tiles 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and 9 (assuming the Red Goliath(s) are going down the center lane). The 1 second initial cooldown of smokes buy enough time for the flash grenades to be used which should be enough time for the force shield to be up and ready to go, assuming all skill levels are high enough.
Importantly, Commanders must remember to retreat T-Dolls (aside from Force Shield units) from the battlefield after their role has been fulfilled as Goliath explosions deal damage to the whole field regardless of where a T-Doll is situated on the field. By the time the Force Shield is ready to go all other T-Dolls should be safely retreated from the battle. Finally, by using the skill, preferably via manual input for better control, sending the Force Shield unit into the Goliaths' proximity to clear the battle, recommended to compensate for the short up-time of the skill.
Lastly, its always important to examine the Red Goliath Formations first, if you see the Goliath being escorted by incredibly strong units such as as Manticore swarms. Dont even bother fighting or even trying against it, its just not advisable to engage, additionally there may be some formations where the Goliath occupies multiple lanes and doesn't run down the center lane. Such formations should also be avoided as the above strategy would not work.
