Machlian (Mahelian in some game files) was an ELID partial immune[1] captured and turned into a Nyto by Paradeus. She was captured by Griffin & Kryuger in Bohnsdorf and assisted in their counter-terrorist operations against Paradeus in Berlin, but was revealed to have been a bait to lure the Commander into a trap to capture Dandelion, and she was killed by Morridow.
Background
Machlian's original was captured as a child by Paradeus after they used Iaso's Boxes in the area where she lived. Due to being an ELID semi-immunosome, she was the only survivor, and William, believing she was a pan-immunosome who could be the perfect vessel for reviving Lunasia, abducted her for his cloning experiments.[2]
"No. 10876"[3] was considered the most perfect clone of her batch,[4] but she resisted the transformation process until it failed[2] so she couldn't be used for nefarious purposes.[5] How she acquired the name "Machlian" is unknown. William kept her alive to collect her immunosome blood daily, to make her pay for ruining his plans.[2] Once processed, her blood was a quick-acting remedy to ELID when common methods involved slow-acting antibodies strengthening.[6] A later clone, code named “No. 10954”, became Morridow.[4] Machlian and Morridow called each other big and little sister[7][8] and Machlian attempted to convince Morridow to escape with her,[5] but Morridow became obsessed with killing Machlian to prove she was superior to her.[2][5][4]
Due to being an early Paradeus experiment, Machlian retains fragments of her memories prior to becoming a Nyto, though most of them have been scrambled and are not easy to reconstruct. Fragments related to her modification by William have been expunged with specific care.[7]
When Paradeus urgently abandoned their lab in Sector D8,[9] Machlian collected some of her blood serum,[10] hid amongst the corpses of failed Nytos and was transported to a dumping ground. Escaping the Paradeus troops searching for her, she reached the Bohnsdorf community, where she was welcomed as a Saint by the community leader Elia.[2] Machlian's reputation as a miraculous healer spread,[11] but her escape was a setup to capture Dandelion.[12][13]
Story Involvement
In September 2064, after Morridow escaped Angelia in Bremen, the Earl sent the Commander to investigate Morridow's lookalike in Bohnsdorf.[14][15] On 20 September,[16] after three days infiltrating Bohnsdorf as a refugee, the Commander witnessed the first healing performed by Machlian on ELID sufferers,[17] though they couldn't see her face under her hood. Elia then took Machlian to encounter the rich backers of Bohnsdorf, who hounded her. The Commander intervened and broke Machlian out of Bohnsdorf before linking back with AR Team, only then realizing that Machlian was their objective.[18] Machlian always called the Commander by the name "Robin", which they had used during the infiltration of Bohnsdorf.
Though AR-15 and Angelia believed Machlian could be Morridow in disguise, purposefully posing as defenseless to trick them, the Commander insisted against any harsh treatment.[19][20][21][22] Machlian was willing to cooperate at first, but she tried to escape after seeing Dandelion, who hacked into her virtual cognition image and extracted Machlian's memories.[6] Because Machlian's VCI was fragile, Dandelion ruled out the possibility that she had been implanted with fake memories, and didn't attempt to reconstruct well-scrubbed memories such as the ones pertaining to William.[7] She however found Machlian's imagined result[22] of the planned Operation Cocoon, where Nytos would activate Iaso's Boxes in Berlin to kill all inhabitants.[7] AR Team and Squad Griffin then joined the hacking to quickly recover fragments revealing the location of the bombs.[23]
After coming to, Machlian couldn't provide more details on the locations of the bombs and was unwilling to share more intel about her blood serum as she didn't trust the Commander.[24] Since they planned to bring her back at the base after finishing the mission in Berlin, the Commander let AR M4 SOPMOD IIM4 SOPMOD IIM4 SOPMOD II include Machlian in the introduction video she recorded for Squad Griffin.[25] The video would arrive at the base only after Machlian's death.[26]
The next night, AR-15, who was still convinced Machlian was a double-agent, and Dandelion, who was curious about her nature, entered Machlian's VCI during her sleep to conduct their own investigation[27] and found memory fragments belonging to Morridow.[28] While AR-15 considered it a proof of Machlian's true identity, Dandelion believed the fragments could have been residual data from a previous transfer. However, they could not access the data again to show to the Commander after Machlian had woken up.[29] Persica theorized Machlian needed to be asleep for subconscious defense systems to be deactivated and open a remote access to Morridow's VCI through resonance due to their cloned bodies.[30] This might be true since Morridow received some of Machlian's memories at the time.[31]
After the Earl cross-referenced the locations shown in Machlian's memories, the Commander allowed her to follow them for the defusal operation in case it would awaken new memories about Operation Cocoon.[22] Her presence enabled Squad 404 to find a hidden bomb they couldn't detect in the first locations.[32] Machlian was targeted by Narciss when she attacked Berlin's quarantine wall, mirroring a vision about her own death, but was saved by the Commander. Machlian was relieved that her visions were not final, but AR-15 pointed out that she could have purposefully steered danger to herself to have the Commander killed.[33]
Back in Bohnsdorf to investigate the next location, Machlian was accused of being a Paradeus traitor and Elia activated the Iaso's Boxes, claiming they would make a new saint.[34] Machlian tried to feed her blood to Elsa, one of Bohnsdorf's children, but couldn't prevent her death. The disaster at Bohnsdorf convinced Machlian to guide the Commander to the Paradeus lab where they could process her blood into the ELID cure.[35] While securing the last location in Berlin's prison, Machlian again believed she would meet her fated end as she heard footsteps similar to Morridow's, who turned out to be an ELID infected.[36] While the Earl allowed Machlian to remain with the Commander until they could secure the serum,[37] Angelia was angered that the Commander wouldn't let her interrogate Machlian to find new leads on her own investigation, and that they ignored all warnings only to secure an ELID cure for Kalina.[36] This was also the opinion of AR-15 and Squad Griffin.[12]
In the abandoned lab, Machlian submitted herself to the serum processing but was separated as the extraction machines moved to a new room,[12] having been modified as a trap.[38] As a jamming signal appeared to prevent Dandelion from functioning normally, Paradeus' intentions were revealed.[13] In the base, Morridow disguised herself as Machlian in an attempt to lure Squad Griffin into a trap, but due to her sudden appearance outside of the teams' planned routes, they considered her hostile and engaged in battle, forcing Narciss to intervene.[39] SMG VP1915VP1915VP1915 marked the fake Machlian with UV paint and warned AR-15 of her betrayal by radio,[13] but when AR Team met the real Machlian, they did not find the paint mark. As they approached the exit, Morridow revealed herself and killed Machlian with her mechanical limbs,[8] destroying the serum at the same time.[40] Morridow mocked Machlian's life and efforts as meaningless just before the tide of battle turned against her when AR M4A1M4A1M4A1 arrived.[26]
The two bodies buried in an unmarked grave by the Commander after escaping Sector D8 were most likely Machlian and Elsa's,[41] preventing Paradeus from recovering Machlian's body for further experiments, though some of her blood was recovered from the extraction machine.[42]
