Orphelune Girard (欧菲露妮·吉拉尔)[1] is an NPC in Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium introduced in Corposant.

Background

As a child, Orphelune was an unremarkable student particularly weak in math, but who still tried to please her neglecting father. She was studying abroad in Frankfurt, Germany when the Coronation Storm massacre began in November 2064. Her attendant attempted to get her out of the city, but they got stuck in traffic and killed by a missiles. For unclear reasons, Orphelune was transported[2] to the edge of Nirvana,[3] where she saw a vision of a seed growing in a city until it was covered in plants. She then met "her", who had run away from her mansion to relieve her boredom. "She" granted Orphelune perfect knowledge of mathematics, having perfectly studied it as part of her education into every "fundamental rule" of the universe, before sending Orphelune back alive to Frankfurt.[2][4]

Orphelune became an exceptional student using the knowledge she acquired from "Her", but this didn't get her closer to her father, who instead started presenting her as Girard's genius for his PR strategy. She joined the Hopkins University youth program and studied biotechnology on her father's order to expand his influence in the Group's largest division. This allowed Orphelune to work on niche plant sciences research and realize the vision she had in Nirvana. She met Chiloveig during her research, who introduced her to CRISPR gene editing and encouraged Orphelune not to worry about how her research would be used, teaching her to consider science as detached from its societal impacts. Orphelune resisted this vision and locked her research with her biometric data.[2] Chiloveig had in fact met Orphelune on the recommendation of William, who asked her to exploit Orphelune's vision of Nirvana for Paradeus' own plans.[5] Orphelune spent a decade working on Project Eden,[6] a technology exploiting the ability of plants to absorb Collapse particles to produce high volumes of electricity while decontaminating entire regions.[7] Chiloveig was instrumental for Project Eden since she introduced Orphelune to the Collapse Epiphyllums who displayed the necessary radiation absorption traits.[8]

Igla was assigned as Orphelune's bodyguard and attendant when she was 16 years old.[9]

Character Info

The daughter of the president of the Girard Group, Oleg Girard, and heiress apparent to the company, though she's more interested in scientific research as a young genius in botany. She was studying abroad in Frankfurt, Germany in November 2064 when the Frankfurt Incident occurred, and claimed to have perceived a "truth" that inspired her to start Project Eden during the incident.[7] She's described as being in her twenties in 2074.[8]

A clumsy but proud girl who won't easily admit her failures and insecurities. While she loathes the political and mercantile interests of the Girard Group, she's still proud to be part of the Girard family and wants her research to help both her father and the general population. Igla is her fiercely loyal bodyguard, attendant and confidant.

Having witnessed "the Truth" by peering into Nirvana, Orphelune is considered a "Blessed One" by Paradeus.[10]

Due to the reality correction event at the end of Corposant, all of Orphelune's life past her involvement in the Frankfurt Incident have effectively never happened in the main timeline of the story.[11][12][13]

Story Involvement

During Corposant, following the heavy hit to the Girard Group's reputation and stock price caused by the actions of Rurik Girard in Odesa, Oleg had Orphelune reveal Project Eden in a desperate PR stunt. The Commander, under a cover identity as a journalist, investigates Orphelune and protects her from assassins sent by Winfried Zimmerman. The Commander gains her trust by claiming to be interested in her research, but while Orphelune believes their interest is academic like her, what they want is to know the origins of the Collapse Epiphyllums used by Paradeus to artificially create Boojums.

After the Commander revealed to her how Collapse Epiphyllums were being used to turn innocent people into ELIDs, Orphelune ordered Igla to investigate the matter and vowed to find a way to stop her work from being misused, while defending that her technology still had the potential to save lives even if innocents died without her knowledge during its development.

However, before Orphelune could activate Project Eden, the URNC intervened to stop the project. Igla took Orphelune to Chiloveig's underground lab to start the project from there, but this revealed Chiloveig's true plans to sacrifice Lviv and use Helena and artificial Boojums to open a gate to Nirvana. Chiloveig tried to convince Orphelune that it was a necessary sacrifice for the advancement of mankind, while the Commander warned her that "the Truth" is only a deformed image of the future that tricks people into becoming monsters. Chiloveig decided that Orphelune had hesitated too much, revealing her honest opinion of Orphelune as a talentless boor who obtained the Truth by mere chance, and copied her biometrics to activate Project Eden herself.

After coming to her senses, Orphelune helped the Commander locate the control center of Project Eden, which was Chiloveig's brain, the only remaining part of her original body. A gate to Nirvana opened when the Commander attempted to destroy it, and Orphelune stepped through it to undo the damage to Lviv and confront Chiloveig, who had been refused access through Nirvana's gates by the "Clear Voice". When Helena appeared in Nirvana, Orphelune also decided to save her from Chiloveig's experiment and undid her own survival in Frankfurt ten years before. She then took Chiloveig down a cliff[4] to merge with her in the Sea of Death[12] so she would experience a true state of neither life or death,[4] but Chiloveig's consciousness was pulled back to the physical world by William at an unknown time in the timeline, leaving Orphelune to be cast away alone in the torrent of consciousness until she would by found by another entity.[12]

By causing her own death in Frankfurt, Orphelune triggered a "reality correction" event that changed the present, allowing Helena to survive, greatly reducing the damage done by Project Eden to Lviv and making her father responsible for the project. The only traces of the real cataclysm were large-scale meteorological events that didn't match what actually happened in Lviv. The only known people to retain memories of the timeline where Orphelune lived until 2074 are the Commander, Igla[12][13] and the disembodied consciousness of Chiloveig recovered by the URNC.[14]

Trivia

  • Since the surname Girard is French, the name "Orphelune" may also be inspired by French words. It sounds close to the French word "orpheline" (a female orphan). "Lune" means "moon", and "orphe" could refer to "Orphée", the Ancient Greek hero Orpheus who went to the underworld and failed his quest there, like Orphelune's visit to Nirvana ended badly.
  • Orphelune's role in the story of Corposant is similar to Machlian's in Mirror Stage: both are innocent people present for only one chapter, who are used by Paradeus and that the Commander fails to save.
  • While the two characters have similar names in English and have thematic connections in the story, the original names of Orphelune (欧菲露妮) and Orphia (奥尔菲娅) have no particular closeness in the original script.
