Lore / Story involvement

In Avernus, RPK-16 had served as the control experiment to Laplace's experimental surgery, which she planned to use to resurrect Lunasia. Due to her original nature as Nadia, Shaw's Mastermind-class AI, combined with her Nyto body and access to the Lake of Cognition, 16 had temporarily become a “false” key to the Relics and played the role of Laplace's Demon to enable Lunasia's return. 16's true wish to become a human was realized when a dying Angelia surrendered her body and mission to destroy Paradeus to her. In truth, 16 had been working as a triple agent for the Prometheans, betraying Task Force DEFY to infiltrate Paradeus and steal their technology.[1]

After the fusion, 16 completed her metamorphosis by giving herself a new name: Embla Petrovskaya, claiming herself a member of the family of her creator. As the Paradeus forces relocated to Frankfurt after abandoning Avernus during the Battle of the Dead Sea, Embla was put in charge of demonstrating Paradeus technology to the rest of the world by proclaiming her identity to the media, while simultaneously fending off the DEFY Dolls coming for her head. She planned to make her dramatic “All Hallows' Eve show” at the Alte Oper opera house, where Faust was originally meant to be played the night of October 31st. Embla relished the chance to act as Mephistopheles, offering mankind a deal with the Devil, but her plans were slightly different from the original story.

In the days before putting on her show, Embla savored the wealth of minute sensations and life events of being a human, while taunting DEFY with her public appearances and by using Angelia's own MP-443 against them. The night of October 31st, Embla lured DEFY in the Alte Oper and unleashed Paradeus forces on them, before luring them out to intercept Nytos rampaging against the citizens of Frankfurt. She however departed from the plan by allowing AR AK-12AK-12AK-12 to remain and mortally wound her. As Bramedb hacked the local media to transmit Embla's message, Embla proclaimed her identity as Angelia, RPK-16 and Embla, and declared herself an immortal despite being visibly wounded. AK-12 then killed her for all to see, before repeating Shaw's warning to mankind against using Relic Technology.[2] In death, Embla had played a very different Faust, one where mankind killed Mephistopheles and refused the deal with the Devil. By proving that Paradeus' Relic technology was far from perfect, she had simultaneously upheld Shaw and Angelia's ideals and weakened Paradeus' position.[1] The scene was ascribed to the Pandora Anti-Relic Organization and called the Pandora Incident.

Before killing Embla, AK-12 attempted to question her about her personal motivations and whether she had murdered Shaw, but 16's mind was no longer a neural cloud that could be accessed like any computer, and in her last moment she cruelly relished her ability to keep secrets and deprive 12 of her closure. Embla only warned 12 that DEFY would keep losing the people they are fighting for if their allegiance only laid in lone heroes like Shaw, Ange and the Commander.[3]

Apostate only am I true, I am you when I am I.[4][3]
