Weapon Background[edit]
The Fusil Porfirio Díaz Sistema Mondragón Modelo 1908, referred to simply as the Mondragón M1908, is a Mexican gas-operated self-loading rifle. It holds the distinction of being one of the first semi-automatic rifles to be formally adopted by a national military.[1]
The M1908 is named after its principal designer, Mexican Army General Manuel Mondragón. Mondragón would begin work on what would become the M1908 as far back as 1891. In August 1904, Mondragón would file a patent application for a new self-loading rifle design. General Mondragón would display his new rifle to the Mexican government, who took an interest in Mondragón's creation. Continued development of the self-loading design would be encouraged by Mexican President Porfirio Díaz, who greatly desired the prestige Mexico would receive by being the first nation to adopt a semi-automatic shoulder-fired rifle as standard issue.
Mondragón's patent application for his self-loading rifle was granted in May of 1907, and a year later in 1908 the rifle was formally adopted by the Mexican army. However, Mexico at the time did not possess the manufacturing capability to produce large enough quantities of good quality rifles. External assistance was required in order to meet production requirements. General Mondragón initially sold the patent rights to Saint-Chamond in France. Only a few rifles would be produced here before the rights were shifted to Swiss arms manufacturer Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft, better known as SIG. Further development of the rifle was undertaken at SIG under the direction of Gotthard End.
The 1908 Mondragón is a gas-operated rifle, with a gas port located about three-quarters of the way down the barrel. The rifle uses a rotating bolt, and features three locking lugs and a set of helical cam grooves on the bolt body. Upon firing, gas from the spent cartridge engages the piston located under the barrel, pushing it back and compressing the mainspring. Instead of being directly connected to the bolt, the gas piston ends with a stub which acts on the bolt handle. The bolt handle has lugs which engage with the helical cams in the bolt body, so that when retracted it rotates and unlocks the bolt. One distinctive feature of the Mondragón rifle is a switch located on the bolt handle. Operating this switch allows the shooter to disconnect the bolt from the gas piston, turning the rifle into a straight-pull bolt-action. This is meant to serve a similar purpose to the magazine cut-offs present on many early magazine rifles, and prevent the shooter from panic firing and wasting ammunition. The rifle would be operated as a manual action straight-pull during standard use, and would only be switched to semi-automatic fire in emergencies.[2]
SIG would finish setting up production for the Mondragón rifle in 1910, and that same year the Mexican Army would order approximately 4000 units to be shipped over. However, the order ended up being cancelled following the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution, resulting in only about 300-1000 M1908 rifles making it over to Mexico. This left SIG with a significant surplus of rifles. Following this, SIG attempted to market the Mondragón rifle internationally, finding little success until 1915 when Germany bought most of the remaining rifles from the Mexican contract. The rifles would be issued to the German air force, where the rifle would be designated the 'Flieger-Selbstlader-Karabiner 15' (Airplane Self-loading Carbine 1915). The rifle was handed out to aerial observers for use against enemy planes, and featured 20 or 30-round drum magazines. Once military aircraft began to be outfitted with machine guns, however, this plan fell apart and the rifle was soon after pulled from combat use in 1917.[3]
