Story
The story is loosely themed after the celebration of the Chinese New Year: the thefts are blamed on the Nian, the delay in the trade fair is explained by the selection of a later auspicious date, the settlement is decorated with red paper lanterns, the annual distribution of goods in the settlement is reminiscent of the distribution of red envelopes, and improvised fireworks are mentioned at several points. None of the characters involved are actually aware of the cultural origins of these elements: the settlement inhabitants only reproduced them after hearing about it from data chips, while the Commander only knew about the Nian from Mayling.
