Weapon Background[edit]

Designed by KBP Instrument Design Bureau in 1991 for close quarter urban combat, the 9A-91 was designed to be a cheaper and more versatile alternative to the AS Val and Val derivative firearms such as the VSS Vintorez and SR-3 Vihkr. Development of the 9A-91 also aimed towards being able to fire other cartridges, but when the design was finalized, the 9A-91 family of firearms was set to use the 9x39mm subsonic cartridge. All the weapons in the 9A-91 series were meant to replace an existing firearm: the 9A-91 carbine served as an alternative to the Vihkr/Val, the VSK-94 sniper rifle looked to be a replacement for the Vintorez, and the A-91 bullpup carbine was potentially made to compete against the costly OTs-14 'Groza'.

The 9A-91 carbine is a gas-actuated, rotating bolt rifle. The action is cycled using a long-stroke gas piston located above the barrel, in a similar manner to a Kalashnikov rifle. Also in keeping with its Kalashnikov roots, the 9A-91 retains the right side charging handle/ejection port. The rifle used polymer for as many non-essential components as possible, in order to reduce the total weight of the gun and reduce manufacturing costs. The 9A-91 is also known to be one of the most compact carbine designs in the world, having a total length of 373mm with the gun stock folded and suppressor removed (574mm with the stock unfolded).

The 9A-91 feeds from a 20 round magazine, and is capable of firing at a rate of 700-900 rounds per minute. The primary cartridge used in the 9A-91 is the subsonic 9x39mm SP-5/SP-6. This cartridge combined with the rifle's short barrel means that 9A-91's effective combat range is restricted to below 100 meters, hence the flip-up rear sights only having settings out to 200 meters. Various Russian-issue optics can fit on the rails provided on the left side of the receiver. The 9A-91 is currently in service with law enforcement units in Russia.[1]

Character Design

The T-Doll's petite size might be a reference to the small size of the 9A-91 carbine. Assuming the actual rifle is drawn to scale and used as a comparison, 9A-91 only measures up to approximately 140cm (4’5”) of height. The red beret she wears is a reference to the Russian internal service troops' uniform, though she wears her beret in a different direction than other Russian T-Dolls such as AR OTs-12OTs-12OTs-12 and AR AK-47AK-47AK-47.

The artist 防弹乳牛 commented that the appearance of 9A-91 was inspired by the character Tobiichi Origami from the anime Date A Live. (在构思角色的时候参考了《约会大作战》的鸢一折纸.)

The 9A-91 was developed while the USSR was undergoing the process of dissolution, so many character design features of 9A are purely Russian-based instead of being influenced by Soviet designs. Despite this, she still sports a post-WW2 Soviet infantry pin on her beret. This might also be a reference to the fact that while 9A series rifles are classified as Kalashnikov derivatives, the two are very different in both exterior design and internal mechanics.

The weapon in 9A-91's official arts feature different optical sights. She uses a Kobra optic in her default appearance, a PK-AS is used in her 'Bullets Cafe' art, and a PSO-1 in her 'Purifying Arrow, Flowers and Dreams' art. Regardless of this, the character's chibi sprites for all costumes only features the Kobra. The weapon's stock appears to be smaller than it should be on the default art, but it appears to be the normal size in her 'Bullets Cafe' outfit.

Trivia

  • 9A was introduced as part of the first batch of additional characters released into the game, which also meant the potential release of AK-74 (or AKS-74U) was hinted as early as July 2016.
    • The T-doll SMG AK-74UAK-74UAK-74U would later be announced in July/August 2018 as part of the 2018 summer event Continuum Turbulence.
  • KBP, at the time of the 9A-91's creation, developed a cheaper version of the SP-6 subsonic cartridge. Named the PAB-9 round, it was originally intended to further reduce the cost for all the subsonic cartridge firing weapons. Unfortunately, only the 9A-91 derivatives can fire the PAB-9, as it caused serious damage to Val, Vintorez and Vihkr's barrels when used. In addition, its performance was nowhere near that of the SP-6, and the PAB-9 was soon discontinued.
  • Due to cost-lowering efforts, 9A-91 magazines were changed from 10/20/30 round polymer magazines to its now-signature 20 round straight steel magazines.
    • Because of this, the 9A-91 is unable to use the magazines of other 9x39mm weapons, nor lend them its own magazines (unless its a VSK-94).
