Weapon Background[edit]
The VP9 is a polymer-framed semi-automatic striker-fired handgun from German arms manufacturer Heckler and Koch. The 'VP' in the name stands for the German word Volkspistole, which translates to "people's pistol", while the 9 indicates the handgun's caliber as being 9mm.[1]
The VP9 was designed by request of the Bavarian State Police, who desired a replacement for the HK P7 pistols that were currently in service. HK decided on a striker-fired handgun to serve as this replacement, a type of handgun that HK had considerable experience with making by that time. The VP9 would end up being the third striker-fired handgun designed by HK, and the first since the P7 series of pistols were introduced in the 1980s. The pistol was allegedly under development for more than four years before its release onto the commercial market in June 2014.
Externally, the VP9 is a fairly standard modern handgun, sporting a polymer frame and a metal slide. It features a Picatinny rail located underneath the barrel in front of the trigger guard, ambidextrous controls, a hammer-forged polygonal barrel, and changeable back and side straps to make the pistol grip customizable for any shooter's hand. One of the primary selling points of the VP9 from a mechanical perspective was an updated striker system that gave the pistol a single stage-like trigger feel with a clean break. Most striker-fired handguns have a pre-travel pull that increases in weight as the shooter squeezes it rearward. By contrast, the VP9 trigger has a short, light take-up with a solid break, followed by a short positive reset. Unlike other striker-fired designs such as the Glock, disassembly of the VP9 does not involve releasing the striker by squeezing the trigger.

Trivia
- The original name for the VP9 was the 'P30X', as the handgun was essentially a striker-fired version of another HK-designed pistol, the P30.
- In a closer look, VP9's artwork is portrayed eating something that closely resembles Kirei - a brand of a shrimp-flavored snack from the Filipino food company Oishi.
