Weapon Background

The UTS-15 is a 12 gauge pump-action shotgun developed by Turkish firearms manufacturer UTAS.

The UTS-15 was conceived as a result of a request to UTAS made by Smith & Wesson in 2006 to develop "the ultimate police shotgun". Smith and Wesson presented a list of criteria that this weapon would need to adhere to: it needed to be chambered in 12 Gauge; it had to be pump-action; the weapon had to have an overall length of less than 30"; and it needed to have a 13-round minimum magazine capacity.

UTAS met Smith and Wesson's length requirement by making the shotgun a bullpup, placing the pistol grip and trigger assembly forward of the barrel breech and action. This shortened the overall length of the weapon down to just 28.3 inches while still sporting an 18.5 inch barrel. To adhere to the magazine capacity requirement, the UTS-15 features two 7-round magazine tubes, giving the weapon a potential maximum capacity of 14 rounds + 1 in the chamber. A selector switch located on the top of the tube/barrel assembly enables the user to choose which magazine tube to feed from, allowing for different ammo types to be loaded into the two tubes (such as having one tube loaded with buckshot and the other with birdshot). The user can also choose not to select a specific magazine tube to load from, in which case the gun will alternate between the two magazine tubes with each shot. Other features of the weapon include a lightweight polymer construction, a top-mounted picatinny rail for the mounting of a wide variety of both iron and optical sights, barrel threading for choke tubes, and a button for controlling the optional light and laser assembly.

Due to its unique design, the UTS-15 became an easily-recognizable weapon within the firearms enthusiast community and was reviewed by several different sources. However, over time the UTS-15 became the subject of harsh criticism in the industry, with the weapon developing a reputation for being plagued by numerous malfunctions (primarily failure to feed and failure to extract). UTAS attempted to correct these issues by developing a 2nd generation, and later a 3rd generation, of the UTS 15 that were supposed to correct the reliability issues.
