Erdis (厄狄斯, also translated Eutis), also known under the codename Blackcurrant,[1] is a drug distributed in the Yellow Zones of Eastern Europe in the 2070s. It primarily has hallucinogenic effects, but also causes addiction[2] and brain damage.[1] The dopamine released during Erdis hallucinations acts as a pain reliever, leading to its distribution among Yellow Zone settlements and Varjagers as a cure or even sham vaccine against ELID. Erdis has been reported to be 20% more effective than placebos at relieving ELID symptoms, but these effects may be false positives from hallucinations, and Erdis causes users to not seek real cures and eventually die.[2]
Erdis was first mentioned in Unanswered Prayers, where it was sold at high price in contamination zones to relieve the pain of people suffering from Collapse radiation sickness. It was in fact disseminated in contamination zones by Paradeus to get people addicted and recruit them into their cult.
When she infiltrated Mangi Security, Nikketa found that members of the PMC were smuggling powdered Erdis,[3][4] though her investigation focused on the smuggling of another drug called Vitalis instead.[5]
At some point, Florence started attending to the sickly Mangi Doll engineer Esme, who was addicted to Erdis' hallucinogenic effects.[6] After taking over Florence's authorizations, Esme had her synthesize a more potent version of Eutis greatly enhancing its chances to produce memory loss, visual-auditory impairment and lost of time and spatial awareness,[1] called Euphoria. Esme fed Euphoria to her colleagues and created a mass hallucination.[7] Florence eventually enlisted the Commander's help to stop Esme. The samples withheld by Florence after this episode were later used to identify the drugs produced in Cecht FABN's factories in Mokosh.[8]
