Weapon Background[edit]

In real life, the AKS-74U is not classified as a submachine gun, but as a "short-barreled carbine". However, due to unknown reasons, MICA Team has the AKS-74U appear as a SMG class T-Doll in game. Despite being named 'AK-74U' in-game, the T-Doll is holding an AKS-74U, and her actual in-game character ID is also listed as 'AKS-74U'. It is unsure whether this was intentional or simply a mistake from MICA Team.

The AK-74U (sometimes called “Krinkov” or “AKSU”) is a short barrel carbine version of the AK-74 assault rifle, developed in the Soviet Union during the middle of the Cold War. It was designed to bridge the gap between an assault rifle and a personal defense weapon. It was intended for use mainly with special forces, airborne infantry, rear-echelon support units, helicopter and armored vehicle crews. It has been augmented and replaced in Russian military service by various submachine guns, and the less compact AK-105 carbine. It is commonly used by law enforcement, with each urban police foot patrol issued at least one.[1]

Following the development and deployment of the 5.56x45mm NATO intermediate cartridge during the Vietnam War in 1961, a certain amount of pressure was asserted on the Soviet Union to catch up with the Western powers in the on-going arms race. The USSR would demand the development of their own intermediate assault rifle cartridge as a result. The outcome was the 5.45x39mm Soviet cartridge, finished in the early 1970s. Now that they had a new cartridge, the Soviet military would need a new rifle capable of chambering it. Many rifle designs were submitted, and in the end the decision was made to go with a rather simple solution: a rechambered AKM design submitted by Mikhail Kalashnikov. This new rifle would become the AK-74, which would be adopted as the new standard service rifle for both the Soviet Union itself and its Warsaw Pact allies.[2] As the Cold War continued and pressure from NATO remained high, variants of the AK-74 were quickly developed as a way of keeping up militarily. Of these numerous variants, one of the more successful ones was the AKS-74U.

The AKS-74U is a short barrel version of AKS-74. The 'U' in the AKS-74U designation stands for 'Ukorochenniy' (Russian for 'shortened'), while the 'S' indicates the installed foldable stock. Various design features allows this variant to be as compact as most modern SMGs while packing the firepower of a rifle cartridge. AKS-74U variants measure as short as 735mm (490mm with the shoulder stock folded). The barrel length of the weapon reduced by about half, from 415mm down to 210mm. This shortened barrel reduced the effective firing range of the weapon down to around 200 meters, with accurate fire at 300-400 meters considered difficult but achievable to a skilled operator. Mechanically, some changes had to be made to allow for the weapon's compact nature. The gas tube was moved back and the gas piston rod cut down in length. Despite the reduced size, the mechanism still operates the rifle in the same way as the larger AK-74, with the AKS-74U still utilizing a gas-operated, rotating bolt action. The rifle itself feeds from standard issue AK-74 or RPK-74 5.45mm magazines, and is capable of a 700-735 rounds per minute cyclic rate of fire.

Due to the decrease in effective range, the AK-74U was not designed for main army use. Instead, it was developed as a compact rifle caliber weapon for Spetsnatz and law enforcement units, who are more likely to enter close quarter combat. The weapon was also suitable for units like paratroopers, who require reduced weight weapons. The reduced barrel length also meant the rifle hand guard itself is no longer able to equip the typical GP series of underslung grenade launchers used by the AK-74. Instead, some units had access to a special 30mm silenced grenade launcher model named BS-1 "Tishina". The launcher was breech-loaded, and required special blank cartridges to launch the grenades, with these blank cartridges stored in the magazine located inside the launcher's pistol grip.

Standard issue models of AKS-74U were manufactured with wooden hand guard pieces. Aiming of the weapon relied purely on iron sights, as they did not originally come with optics rails. Specialized models and later modernized versions can be found with accessory rails for modern equipment compatibility. Production of the AKS-74U stopped in 1993 shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, however since a large quantity of the rifle was manufactured, it is still in service in various branches of the modern Russian army and law enforcement agencies. Broken down AKS-74U rifles are being replaced by the new generation AK-105 5.45mm caliber short barrel carbine. The AKS-74U also inspired many Soviet/modern Russian weapon designs, notably the AK-9 (which lead to the further development from TsKIB SOO, who presented the OTs-12 'Tiss' and the OTs-14 'Groza').[3]

Character Design

A sporty T-Doll around 145-150cm in height. AK-74U has messy short blonde hair spiked up in random directions. Her sense of fashion appears very modern, with her outfit consisting of a loose-fitting hoody, sports boots, a waist belt with bags, and her sports earphones. On top of that, she is also carrying the modernized/later production model of the AKS-74U, as evidenced by the black glass-reinforced polyamide hand-guard.

Like all other T-Dolls developed by Infukun under his true artist alias 音符, he has failed to share any inspirations or comments on the character design. One must then assume that he was inspired while sitting on the toilet.

Trivia

  • The SMG classification of this T-Doll is likely for the same reason as SMG G36CG36CG36C: both are rifle caliber weapons as compact as an SMG while filling a similar role. One also has to keep the idea of game balance in mind, since the game already has a lot of AR type T-Dolls.
  • AK-74U's release was hinted at as early as July 2016. When AR 9A-919A-919A-91 was first released in CN servers, 9A mentioned a "74-chan" in her secretary lines, thought to be in reference to either the AK-74 or the AKS-74U. At last, AK-74U was announced in July/August 2018, together with the 2018 summer event Continuum Turbulence.
    • Much like other T-Dolls voiced before the 3rd batch of added CVs, AK-74U also lacks a voiced post-OATH secretary line. Even before her release, one can find the role "AK-74U of Girls' Frontline" on CV Takahashi Haruka's production profile. Combining these evidences, AK-74U was speculated to have been voiced before the third batch, but was just never released then.
  • One of AK-74U lines refers to 'poison bullets'. This is a nod to the Mujahedeen calling the 5.45×39mm round the "Poison Bullet", due to the severe wounds it produced to the victim and the resulting need to amputate.
  • When put into an echelon with AR AK-74MAK-74MAK-74M whose skill is at least level 4, AK-74U's skill becomes a passive effect instead.
  • AKS-74U is also used by vehicle crews such as BTR and Mi-24 attack helicopter. As such, it is a status symbol especially in the middle east since possessing one often implies that the vehicle was taken out along with the crew.
