Weapon Background
The '1979 Nianshi Chongfeng Qiang' (1979年式7.62mm轻型冲锋枪; "7.62mm Submachine Gun Model 1979"), more commonly known as the 79 Shì Chōngfēng Qiāng (79式冲锋枪; literally: "Type 79 Submachine Gun"), was a first generation indigenous submachine gun used by the Chinese military, security, and police forces.[1] Its development coincided with the start of the Sino-Soviet Split, as Communist China began to distance itself politically from the Soviet Union.
In the early 1970's, the People's Liberation Army General Staff Department issued a set of requirements for an individual automatic weapon that would be used by Chinese military and police forces who handled public security, communications, and other rear guard duties. The weapon was also to be optimized for jungle warfare. The 208th Research Institute of China Ordnance Industry, under the leadership of Liu Zhitong, was directed to head the design of this new weapon. From 1971 to 1975, a number of initial prototypes were produced. However, these prototypes failed twice in various torture tests, mainly because the design of the chamber could not handle the pressures of the 7.62x25 Tokarev ammunition in service with the PLA at the time. These failures forced the design committee to redesign the gun, with the updated design being finalized in 1979.
Mechanically, the Type 79 is essentially a scaled down version of the Norinco Type 56 assault rifle. While similar in function and design, it is important to note that the weapons are not identical. The Type 79 is also similar to the Type 64 submachine gun, albeit without the integrated suppressor. Somewhat unusually for a submachine gun, the Type 79 uses a short-stroke gas piston with a rotating bolt. This choice of operating action is likely the result of the high-pressure ammunition used in the Type 79, as well as potentially to handle the weapon's very high rate of fire of 1,000 rounds per minute. The weapon's receiver is made of stamped steel, with the weapon's selector switch mounted on the right side of the weapon in a manner similar to an AK, although a second selector switch is also present on the left side of the weapon. The early pattern Type 79 featured a top-folding stock, also made of sheet metal, and takes proprietary 20-round box magazines.[2]
The Type 79 was adopted by the People's Liberation Army in 1983, and entered production the same year. It would be produced until 1992, with at least 200,000 made. In 2001, the Type 79 was replaced in PLA service by the QCW-05 (the military variant of the JS 9 submachine gun). Despite no longer being in official production, the Type 79 remains in widespread use with the People's Liberation Army Air Force, various scout and special operation units, as well as the People's Armed Police (PAP) and the Public Security Police. In the early 2000s, Type 79s still in service within police units were retrofitted with railed fore-ends, in order to equip them with tactical accessories like optical sights, flashlights, and new muzzle brake devices.
There are currently plans to law enforcement agencies to replace the Type 79 with the JH16-1, which was introduced in 2017 and is chambered in 9x19mm.
Character Design
Type 79 is a specialty T-Doll model with red eyes, brown hair, a skin-tight 'internal capacitance leotard', and a mechanical arm. She wears a headband to bring her design closer to other Norinco T-Dolls, such as Type 95. The mechanical arm was given to her in order to make her design more 'sci-fi themed', with the idea of her being able to customize and modify this appendage for various tasks (noted by her artist in 'The Art of Girls' Frontline Vol.1').
Her main character trait is that she is overly concerned over her 'femininity', going to rather extreme lengths to do so, including using synthetic skin to disguise her mechanical arm.

Trivia
- Type 79 apparently is quite skilled at tailoring. She designed and produced her own dress to attend a cocktail party[3]. She also flawlessly repaired one of the other guest's dresses and won high praise for her work, to the point that she was offered a chance to join a company that specialized in repairing high-end clothes, although Type 79 refused the offer.
- The lady who had her dress repaired by Type 79 was the one whom K5 predicted would have their dress torn[4].
- The Type 79 has earned a somewhat infamous reputation in China for being one of the weapons used extensively by forces operating under Lin Biao and the 'Gang of Four'.
