A 5.56 calibre selective fire service rifle designed by Combined Logistics and produced by the 205th Armory of Taiwan. T91 is a derived product of T86 rifle and as a direct successor to the previous service rifle T65. The name T91 indicates the rifle developed on the 91st year of the establishment of Republic of China, actual year of production is 2002. T91 entered service in following year of it's development completion, it completely replaced T65 rifle from the mainframe army of Taiwan and became their new standard service rifle. Other than Taiwan, other countries such as Jordan and the Emirates have also enlisted T91 to service with their Armed Forces, Indonesia can produce T91 under license.

Indonesia can produce the T91 under license.

Designed based on the T65 rifle, T91 is also an AR-15 derivative that incorporates features from M16 and AR-18 rifles. Differ from most AR-15 derivatives, T91 uses short-stroke gas piston action just like it's predecessors instead of the direct impingement operation. It however uses the modernized gas piston system of T86 for an easier maintenance routine. Parts and operating mechanism within the upper receiver of T91 are also coated with nickel boride to improve firing reliability under extreme conditions. The forward assist typically found on an AR-15 derivative is also remove in T91's design.

The standard variant of T91 features a chrome-lined 408mm long barrel, while the weapon itself measures 880mm with the telescopic stock fully extended, it is able to fire at a muzzle velocity of 975 m/s. The CQC carbine variant have a slower muzzle velocity due to the shorter 349mm barrel. T91 is able to achieve 800 to 850 rounds per minute of cyclic rate of fire, covering an effective firing range of 400 metres, able to fire 3-round bursts on top of semi and fully automatic firing. The weapon is fed with Taiwan made 30-round STANAG compatible magazines housing 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge.

The weapon features a Picatinny rail on top of the receiver, standard issue T91 have a carrying handle that usually fits on the rail, the carrying handle also functions as the M16A2 style rear peephole sight that goes together with the frontal post. Removing the carrying handle can reveal the rail for fitting of compatible optics. Standard issue forearm arm guard is triangular in shape, it can fit the T85 40mm under-barrel grenade launcher, the launcher itself is sliding barrel break-action like the American M203. CQC carbine make use of another service arm guard since it has a shorter barrel, the other arm guard have integrated Picatinny rails on all four sides to attach modern combat equipment.

An upgraded version of T91 is proposed by 205th Armory, gradual upgrading of the servicing T91 are in progress starting with some departments of the army of Taiwan. Designated as T91S, it made various changes to minor features of the rifle, such as the flash suppressor style, the barrel thickness, the arm guard design, removal of the bayonet mount, the carrying handle is also removed and T91S makes use of a flip-up rear sight.<ref name="rifle">[[wikipedia:T91_assault_rifle|Wikipedia entry on T91 assault rifle]]</ref>

Weapon Background[edit]

The T91 is a 5.56x45mm caliber, selective fire rifle designed by Combined Logistics and produced by the 205th Armory of Taiwan. It's derived from the T86 rifle and is a direct successor to the previous Taiwanese service rifle, the T65. The name 'T91' indicates the rifle was developed in the 91st year since the establishment of the Republic of China, with the actual year of production being 2002. The T91 entered service the following year, and replaced the T65 rifle to become the new standard service rifle of the Taiwanese military. Other than Taiwan, a number of other countries, such as Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, have also enlisted the T91 into service with their armed forces. Indonesia can produce the T91 under license.

The design of the T91 is based on the earlier T65 rifle, which itself was based on the AR-15 platform. It also incorporates features from the M16 and AR-18 rifles. Unlike most AR-15 derivatives, the T91 uses a short-stroke gas piston instead of a direct impingement system, using the modernized gas piston system of the T86 for easier maintenance. The parts and operating mechanism within the upper receiver of the T91 are also coated with nickel boride to improve firing reliability under extreme conditions. The forward assist typically found on AR-15 derivative rifles has also been removed.

The standard variant of the T91 features a chrome-lined 408mm long barrel, while the weapon itself measures 880mm with the telescopic stock fully extended. The T91 is able to achieve an 850 rounds per minute cyclic rate of fire with a muzzle velocity of 975 m/s, and has an effective range of 400 meters. Like many military rifles, the T91 is able to fire in 3-round bursts in addition to semi-automatic and fully automatic fire. The weapon is fed with Taiwan made 30-round STANAG compatible magazines housing 5.56x45mm NATO cartridges.

Standard issue T91 rifles have a carrying handle that also functions as the rear peephole sight, similar to the M16 pattern of rifles. The carry handle is removable, allowing the operator access to a top-mounted Picatinny rail for fitting compatible optics. The front handguard is triangular in shape, and can fit the T85 40mm under-barrel grenade launcher. The launcher itself is of a sliding barrel break-action much like the American M203. The CQC carbine variant make use of a different pattern of handguard since it has a shorter barrel. This shorter handguard has integrated Picatinny rails on all four sides to attach modern combat equipment.

An upgraded version of the T91 has been proposed by 205th Armory, with gradual upgrading of in-service T91 rifles being in progress with some departments of the army of Taiwan. Designated the 'T91S', this new model sports various changes to minor features of the rifle, such as the flash suppressor style, the barrel thickness, the handguard's design, and the removal of the bayonet mount. The carrying handle has also been removed entirely, with the T91S making use of a flip-up rear sight.[1]

Trivia

  • T91 was originally an exclusive T-doll for the TW Servers before being added to the other servers construction pools at a later date.
  • There are warning markings on T91's upper receiver that indicates the receiver is strictly for use with the T91. Though the upper receivers of the T65 and T91 can fit on each other, they are not reverse compatible. Firing a T91 with a T65 upper receiver can cause chamber detonations as the firing pin strikes the cartridge primer.
    • The same warning marking can be found on T91's stock.
  • Before becoming a T-Doll for G&K, T91 apparently worked at a tea shop.
