Weapon Background
The C14 Timberwolf MRSWS (Medium Range Sniper Weapon System) is a bolt-action sniper rifle built by Canadian arms company PGW Defense Technologies Inc. It was originally developed as a civilian sporting rifle, however after a couple of modifications the rifle was deemed suitable for military use. It has since become the primary sniper rifle of the Canadian Armed Forces.[1]
During the 1990s, the Canadian Armed Forces began looking to replace the aging C3A1 bolt-action rifles which had been in service since the 1950s. A list of requirements was drafted, one of which being that the rifle must be capable of fulfilling an anti-personnel role up to 1,200 m (1,312 yd). During the 2001 rifle trials at CFB Gagetown, the C14 was entered into the competition by PGW Defense Technologies. The C14 started life as a civilian long range hunting and sporting rifle, designed to chamber super magnum cartridges. Civilian Timberwolf rifles are offered in several chamberings, up to the .408 Cheyenne Tactical cartridge and the .416 PGW cartridge, a wildcat cartridge based on the .408 Cheyenne Tactical. The version used by the Canadian Armed Forces is chambered for .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge, a far more powerful cartridge than the 7.62x51mm NATO rounds used in the older C3A1 rifles. The C14 would perform spectacularly during the 2001 rifle trials, handily meeting the stringent distance requirements, and was selected to fill the role of the Canadian Armed Forces' dedicated anti-personnel rifle.[2] Aside from the Canadian Armed Forces, the C14 has also seen limited use with the British SAS as well as the Royal Saudi Land Forces.
The introduction of the C14 Timberwolf MRSWS in 2005 saw the phasing out of the C3A1 from active service. The C14 was then the main sniper rifle of the Canadian Armed Forces until its replacement by the Sako TRG M10 (designated C21) in 2023.[3] This was ultimately done due to the Sako TRG M10's ability to swap between configurations for both 7.62x51mm and .338 Lapua Magnum, reducing operational and training costs for the Canadian Armed Forces.
The C14 Timberwolf uses a steel rotary bolt with dual front locking lugs, plus one additional locking lug at the rear. The extra locking lug at the rear assists in preventing the bolt from becoming jammed when chambering another round. The bolt is partly helically fluted, which reduces weight and stops bolt debris jams. A double plunger ejector and hook type extractor are used to remove fired cartridge cases, which helps create a very smooth action which is very reliable. The barrel for the MRSWS is a modified, heavy, free-floating Krieger-made barrel. The barrels are cryogenically stress-relieved and partly helically fluted, which reduces weight whilst maintaining most of the structural strength.[4]
The current iteration of the rifle, the Timberwolf Gen 3, includes multiple new features. The folding butt stock seen on previous versions of the Timberwolf was replaced by a PGW-made fixed stock, designed to retain the aesthetics and feel of the original folding butt stock. The rifle platform has also moved on from its proprietary box magazine design, instead adopting the more common AICS (Accuracy International Chassis System) magazine.[5]
Lore / Story involvement
After the Commander's disappearance during the Battle of Frankfurt, C14, AR CZ-805CZ-805CZ-805 and SG Six12Six12Six12 joined Kalina and HG TokarevTokarevTokarev to find them.[6] After being destroyed to save Kalina from security robots,[7] they were repaired in time to take part in the final operation in Frankfurt alongside the rest of the Commander's Dolls.[8]
