The Remington Adaptive Combat Rifle (Remington ACR) is a modular semi-automatic rifle designed by Magpul Industries of Austin, Texas, and known initially as the Masada.
By 21st Century combatant assault rifles are aiming towards the concept of adaptive, modular and compatible, adapting to different role, modularly changeable different calibre munitions, and compatible with different accessories/components. This concept was widely demonstrated by the AR-15 platform used by civilian firearm enthusiasts, who outfitted their AR-15 rifles with various different made receivers and parts, AR-15 rifles are considered extremely modular and adaptable to a variety of different functions, uses, calibre, and firing performances. Designed by Magpul Industries, the Adaptive Combat Rifle (ACR), previously known as Masada, was presented to the military with this concept in mind. Designed in 2006 and on an Industry Day in 2008, ACR demonstrated the current carbine technology and competed to replace the M4 Carbine from US military during the 2011 Individual Carbine competition.

In late January 2008, Bushmaster Firearms International entered into a licensing agreement with Magpul whereby Bushmaster would take over production, future development, and sales of the Masada. It was then known as the Bushmaster ACR. However, Remington Arms is contracted to manufacture the rifle for the US military and US law enforcement agencies.
The military version of ACR is produced by Remington Arms, Remington ACR classifies as a gas operated, selective fire rifle, it makes use of the short-stroke gas-piston operation of Stoner's AR-18, able to achieve 650 to 700 rounds per minute of fire rate. Remington ACR chambers the standard 5.56×45mm NATO calibre and the 6.8×43mm Remington SPC designed for US SOCOM use, can be fed by Magpul's own 30 round capacity PMag. Fire selector lever is located above the pistol grip like a M16 rifle, it toggles between fully and semi automatic as well as functions as a safety. Charging handle is placed similar to FN's SCAR where it is just above the magazine well, the magazine release is just above the trigger. All the features of ACR can be moved to either side of the rifle making it fully ambidextrous, empty shell can only eject to the right, but a deflector is installed to deflect spent shells away from left handed user's face.

The Remington ACR was one of the weapons displayed to U.S. Army officials during an invitation-only Industry Day on November 13, 2008. The goal of the Industry Day was to review current carbine technology prior to writing formal requirements for a future replacement for the M4 Carbine. It was also part of the Individual Carbine competition to replace the M4.
ACR is advertised to be adaptive, meaning the rifle can be quickly disassembled, parts can be replaced ands swapped quickly on the field without tools. To switch between firing calibres user simly has to replace the boilt head, barrel and put in a different magazine. Having access to different length barrels and foldable/extendable stock, ACR can quickly change into a carbine, PDW and DMR variant from the standard assault rifle configuration. Other features include various polymer made gun components to cut down weight, and integrated Picatinny rail along the top of the rifle to mount optics. Additional Picatinny rails can also be installed on Remington ACR's handguard for the mounting of additional tactical accessories.

Remington Arms is responsible for the selective fire version of the ACR, while Bushmaster Firearms International is responsible for the semi-automatic only version.
The cancellation of Individual Carbine competition meant ACR did not win despite demonstrating all of its selling points, and the rifle itself did not enter mass production. However in 2008 Bushmaster International entered into a licensing agreement with Magpul whereby they would take over production, future development, and sales of the ACR, a semi-automatic version known as the Bushmaster ACR is released and supplied to civilian gun enthusiasts who are willing to purchase the ACR platform. Bushmaster also produced various aftermarket conversion kits allowing Bushmaster ACR to chamber calibres such as 6.5mm Grendel, .300 BLK and 7.62×39mm Soviet.

The Remington ACR is a gas operated, selective fire weapon with a modular design. It has several features of other recent designs, such as the M16 and FN SCAR. The key idea of the ACR's modular system, is that it will provide a wide variety of configurations within a matter of minutes. It is only available for the military and law enforcement market in 5.56×45mm NATO and 6.8mm Remington SPC. It can change calibers from 5.56 mm to 6.8 mm in minutes at the user level by changing the bolt head, barrel, and magazine.

All of the rifle's parts can be easily stripped for cleaning and all of its controls are fully ambidextrous. A three position (safe, semi-auto and full auto) fire selector lever is located over the pistol grip. A charging handle can be installed on either side of the receiver and does not reciprocate when the weapon is fired. Magazine release button is also ambidextrous. Spent case ejection port is located on the right side of the receiver, however it has a case deflector, which propels the cases away from left-handed shooters.

The rifle can also be configured for handguard, stock type and trigger unit setup. Among the options for the ACR are various stocks including a fixed adjustable (in terms of length of pull and cheek weld), folding adjustable (folding and six-position telescoping), and sniper stock based on the Magpul PRS stock. The Remington's handguard model has a five-sided aluminum handguard that can be user configured with MIL-STD-1913 rail elements, while the Bushmaster's model is polymer with heat guards and attachable aluminum tri-rail.

The magazine conceived for the 5.56×45mm version of the rifle is called the Magpul PMag, a high-impact, 30-round, polymer magazine claimed by Magpul to be significantly more resistant to wear, shock, and harsh environments than other counterparts on the market. The PMag is STANAG 4179-compatible, as it will readily fit any STANAG magazine firearm, including the M16 rifle family.

The rifle is available with four barrel lengths and can be easily converted from a standard assault rifle (with a 16.5 inch barrel) into a carbine (with a 14.5 inch barrel), into a compact assault rifle (with a 10.5 inch barrel), or into a designated marksman rifle (with an 18-inch barrel) without any tools. Barrel lengths of the two calibers are exactly the same. The Barrels are hammer-forged and hardened with a nitriding process rather than having chrome plated bores as some other rifles.

Trivia

  • She addresses herself as Bushmaster ACR in her introduction quote, indicating that she is carrying the civilian semi-automatic ACR.
    • Since the rifle was not chosen by US Army, more Bushmaster's ACR is produced and supplied to civilian users, making it more readily available. Since the story outlines that T-Dolls are fitted older generation projectile weapons purchased from the black market, and Bushmaster's ACR is more common than Remington's, this is likely the reason why she addresses herself as Bushmaster ACR.
  • The name Masada was given because ACR was designed with the idea of 'Defiant' in mind, Masada refers to the Siege of Masada, where the Sicarii rebels and resident Jewish families of the Masada fortress committed mass suicide when under siege of Roman legions, a final act of defiance where they chose death over enslavement.
