Before a file (image, sound, or other) can be used on a Wiki, it must be uploaded into the Wiki's database. Using files remotely from an external address isn't authorized for security reasons.
To learn how to display images after they've been uploaded, read the Guideline.
Files are also subject to the Referencing rules.
File formats in use
- Images: jpg, jpeg, png, svg
- gif is technically permitted but should be avoided because of its weight. For animations, video formats are preferred.
- Sound: mp3, ogg, flac
- We prefer the ogg format for sound files.
- Video: mp4, webm, wav
- Files related to chibi animations: txt, skel
File info
When a file is uploaded, its information is displayed on its own article. For example: File:M4A1 S.png.
File pages can contain information like an explanation of where the file comes from, a list of characters appearing in it if there's a lot, and the categories of the image such as Category:Skill icons or Category:Story artworks.
In accordance with the References Guidelines, files taken from another website should contain a link to the original source, to make it easier to find metadata and prove it is official.
Files you can and can't upload
As stated in the Guidelines, IOP Wiki should be focused on official content. This includes screenshots, recordings and files from the games, content from official websites and social media, excerpts from books, and photographs of real-life events. In some cases (such as screenshots from the official WeChat or Weibo), images are the only way for the majority of users to access sources. As written above, links help to identify official content.
Alteration of official files
Official artworks may not be freely modified from their source, this includes upscaling and removal of watermarks. The role of the Wiki is to provide the artworks in the best condition they've been officially shared in, so that the community may base their reworks on these official versions.
Still images obtained by reassembling spritesheets (such as Live2D portraits or in-game chibis) must be displayed alongside a warning about their origin and disclosure of the animation tools used. Refer to IOP Wiki:How To/GFL2/T-Doll#Regarding Live2D story portraits for the complete explanation.
- Exceptions
- Due to Wiki size restrictions, it may be necessary to downscale large files, which makes providing a link to the original source even more important.
- Pasting related images together is acceptable for the sake of presentation.
"Best Version" policy
If multiple official versions of an artwork exist, multiple sources can be provided and the image uploaded should be the one with the best compromise between resolution, clutter from watermarks and cropping.
Scans policy
Scans of official books should be limited to excerpts for the purpose of illustration or translation (like File:Avernus 3.jpg), not full books. For artbooks in particular, full pages shouldn't be uploaded.
Fanworks policy
Fan-arts are not accepted unless they had a significant impact on the IP or community (such as File:HK416 Not Found.png which is directly connected to Girls' Frontline: Glitch Land). Do your research, as official social media sometimes repost fan-arts; you should check social media in all languages to verify if a fan-artist is credited on some channels.
Aside from fan-arts, fan-made graphics, charts and maps based strictly on official information can be displayed in articles (like File:GFL2 Europe.jpg). Detailed explanations and links to external resources will strengthen the confidence in such images, as contributors may challenge their accuracy otherwise.
Where to upload files
From the Upload page
Go to Special:Upload, then select the file from your computer in the Source file section. Confirm the upload with the button at the bottom of the page.
- Advantages
- You can change the title of the file before upload if the file doesn't have the correct name on your computer.
- You can define the content of the file page in advance. This is used to provide the source of the file or set its category.
- Disadvantages
- No multi-files upload
From the editing screen

After accessing the Edit link of any page, you can drag-and-drop files from your computer onto the Drop files here section of the editing toolbar. Then confirm with the Upload file button. Do not leave the page until all uploads are done or the upload batch will be cut short.
- Advantages
- Multi-files upload
- Disadvantages
- The file must already have the correct title on your computer.
- The source or categories must be added to the file page separately.
Rules for file titles
Many templates on the Wiki require the files to have a specific title so they can be displayed automatically. Refer to the template documentation or search for examples from existing pages to know the format to use.
Examples of common formats needed:
- For skill icons:
Icon_Skill_<File name>.png - For Doll portraits:
<Article title>_S.png - For chibi skel files:
<Article title>_chibi_skel.skel - For the sound file when obtaining a Doll:
<Article title> GAIN JP.ogg
In case of error, the file page can be renamed using the More->Move menu on the page's toolbar. When a standard user moves a page, it will always leave a redirect because they don't have deletion rights. Ask an admin to do the renaming or notify them of the move so they can clean up the redirect if it's not necessary.
