After the success story of MP5, Heckler & Koch continued to develop selective firing close quarter combat SMGs, one of the development outcome and the official successor to MP5 is the UMP (Universale Maschinenpistole) series. UMP SMGs are selective fire, recoil operated and fires from a closed bolt, featuring three main variants which are designed to fire 9x19mm Parabellum, .45 ACP and .40 S&W. Compared to the older MP5 model, UMP was advertised to be more reliable, more modern and lower cost, other common features of the UMP SMGs are Picatinny rails placements (Along the top of the gun, both sides and bottom of the barrel) and a foldable buttstock.
UMP40 is the variant that chamber the .40 S&W cartridge, like the other two variants, UMP40 also features a 2-round burst fire mode, together with semi-automatic and fully automatic. Feeds on a 30-round detachable straight magazine, the weapon is able to reach a fire rate of 650 rounds per minute, reaching a muzzle velocity of 320m/s, covering up to 100 metres of effective range. Noted that UMP have their rate of fire reduced in order to compensate for the recoil generated from firing large pistol cartridge, making UMP series one of the slowest firing SMGs on the market.
UMP40 was also advertised to be compact and light weight, while having a total length of 450mm with the stock folded (690mm unfolded), it also weights only 2.3kg when unloaded thanks to the polymer made body frame.
After some FBI agent casualties during the 1986 Miami shoot out, the bureau was on the look out for a better alternative munition type than the servicing 9mm Parabellum, ideally of a bigger calibre but with a manageable level of recoil. .40 S&W was the chosen in the end with it's potential energy advantage over 9mm Parabellum and a more manageable recoil than the 10mm Auto cartridge of Bren Ten. Gaining favour and entered service with the bureau also gave it some popularity among other law enforcement units.
Many other special policing units and investigative agencies all over the world have began to procure .40 S&W cartridge firearms into service, mostly in regions of Australia, Canada and the United States, sequentially boosted UMP40's sale. This also explains why unlike the other to UMPs, UMP40 is more commonly found enlisted to service with law enforcement units rather than military service.
Character Info
Design
SMG UMP45UMP45UMP45 and SMG UMP9UMP9UMP9's index number are 103 and 101 respectively, the number 40 also appeared on UMP9's character introduction. Based on these two facts many player would have guessed the 102 index slot was/will be UMP40, at last 40 joined the game with the announcement of the event Operation Deep Dive. Though if one followed Renatsu.Z's twitter they may have noticed some posted artwork resemble a different looking character with a UMP SMG long before UMP40's release, such as this twitter post here.
.40 S&W Handgun cartridge is mostly used by law enforcement units, many character design features on UMP40 resembles that of a law enforcement personal or investigative field agent, such as the radio handset, smart business dress and the name card. UMP40's costume design differs greatly from UMP45, this suggests that UMP9 was made after the event of Deep Dive, produced with UMP45 as a template.
UMP40 was officially announced right before Deep Dive in July of 2017, she came fitted with voice lines, which suggests that her as a T-doll was programmed but never introduced into the game, or maybe never had an opportunity to be introduced. UMP40 chibi sprite retains a "Grenade Throwing" animation, which could potentially mean that her original skill was intended to be a grenade of some sort before changing to the current skill.
Personality
The official character setting states that UMP40 is a T-doll with super sunny and cheery personality, feels more superior than the others because of her UMP heritage, but she does possess a strong will and strong sense of team spirit. Most of her silly actions and speeches are purely for the purpose of gaining other's attention.
UMP40 address herself with "Atai (あたい)". As evident from her secretary and logistic mission quotes, her hobby is sunbathing, which would explains why she appears more tan than the other dolls. Other than sunbathing she also seem to enjoy partying. With her cheery personality she is good at making friends with other T-dolls, perhaps the silly way she act is merely a way strengthen the relationship bonding between comrades. UMP40's best friend seem to be SMG MP5MP5MP5 despite saying that she is designed to replaced MP5 from service, several UMP40's quote mentions MP5.
In-game
As a T-doll UMP40 seem to belong in a very specific niche since she does not fit with most ARSMG formations.
Being unable to provide buffs to ARs can be considered a major weakness in ARSMG formations. 500% increased crit rate might seem to be a big value, but SMG units by default only have 5% crit rate, when increased by 500% it only adds up to 30%. 100% crit rate can be achieved by fitting a suppressor, which takes up the accessory slot, meaning the SMG unit can no longer mount optics, which lose out on accuracy.
UMP40 features a one-of-a-kind skill, her active skill is a permanent toggle skill with a cool down of 666 seconds, it is unlikely for any combat sessions to last over 11 minutes for it to be available for activation again.
UMP40's own damage stat increases to a relatively high value after 10 seconds, with the 150% constant damage increase after 10 seconds she can contest the MVP title even against SMG SR-3MPSR-3MPSR-3MP in extended combat sessions. But at the cost of evasion rating being lowered, renders UMP40 just as vulnerable as SR-3MP. By leaving the skill inactive UMP40's evasion status also increases up to a maximum value of 50% constant, but her low HP pool does mean she is not as good as the other top tier SMG evasion tanks such as SMG RO635RO635RO635 and SMG MP7MP7MP7.
Story Involvement
UMP40's only story involvement is in the prologue to Operation Deep Dive, the "Butterfly event".

Butterfly Event
A core character who made an appearance in the prologue to Operation Deep Dive, she approached UMP45 who was in a similar situation as her during the Butterfly event, thus the two became close friends.
Through out the event of Deep Dive, UMP45 was slowly being corrupted by Parapluie, segments of her memories are being presented to the player which revealed the character UMP40. 40 as a character of the past no longer exists on the present time axis, but her actions changed 45's fate drastically.
Flash back to Butterfly event, being in the same situation as 45, 40 also have electronic warfare chips installed in place of fire control chips, which meant she was also an under performing T-doll when it comes to combat. 40 approached the moody 45 who just finished her training in the shooting range, the two being in similar situation quickly made friends with each other. At the time 45 was extremely upset because of her combat performance, she spent far more time in the shooting range than the other T-dolls, but without a fire control chip, she could never perform anywhere near the others. 40 regularly cheers 45 up by saying "Things will be different one day.". 45 looked up to 40 in many ways, as a friend, as a mentor, as a soul mate.
Soon enough 40 realised the purpose of their electronic warfare chips, they were meant to be used to attack the forces of the Homeland Security Agency electronically in their upcoming operation. After synchronizing their Digi-mind 40 found out that they are both modeled off the same Atlas format, 40 is the "key" while 45 is the "spare", the task that 40 cannot complete 45 will be forced under control and complete it. As a result of their electronic attacks, half way through the operation the factory became a battle royale, every T-doll except for 40 and 45 turned berserk. 40 hijacked and took over 45's commands, having teamed up with 45, the two fought waves after waves of berserked T-dolls until finally only the two of them remained.
In the very end after 40 fulfilled her purpose, she realised that in an attempt to wipe out the evidence of this whole operation, her Digi-mind will be formatted remotely. Lying to 45 saying that both of them will die from the the electronic attack but it can be stopped if only one T-doll remains in the facility, she forced 45 into a duel. Losing the duel intentionally, 40's final request for 45 is to kill her, saying that as a T-doll she wishes to be killed in combat instead of being formatted, if 45 does not squeeze the trigger now, both of them will die from the format. In truth she wanted 45 to become strong, to live not as a puppet but as an independent being, with the pull of the trigger, the shackle that binds 45 to her fate perishes, she walks towards the path of freedom, she is relinquished from the fate of the puppet.
