Weapon Background[edit]
The Beretta AR70 is a gas-operated automatic rifle chambered for the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge, and is the standard-issue service rifle for most of the Italian Armed Forces.[1]
Once the Cold War began in earnest, the Italian military began to look into finding a replacement for their BM59 battle rifles. After failing to acquire a license to produce the M16 rifle, Beretta worked with SIG throughout the 1960s to develop a 5.56mm infantry rifle. When the two companies parted ways in 1968, SIG went on to produce the SIG-540 and Beretta developed the AR-70. It was introduced in 1972, and was adopted by the militaries of Jordan and Malaysia, as well as by Italian special forces units. The Italian Army at large would later adopt the folding-stock 70/90 version in 1990.
The AR-70 takes several cues from the AK series of rifles, including the rock-in magazine with large rear paddle release and a two lug rotating bolt. In a somewhat unorthodox choice, the rifle uses a coil spring in tension for its mainspring, located around the gas piston and in front of the bolt. While this would likely cause heat-related problems in a light machine gun, it appears to have been acceptable in a rifle, as the improved 70/90 version maintain the same system. It does also allow simple use of folding or collapsing stocks, as there are no working parts in the stock.[2]
The AR70 was manufactured with limited use of polymer plastic parts, and used stainless steel whenever possible (a Beretta staple). It weighs approximately 4 kg in its standard configuration. It has three firing positions (full auto, three-round burst, and semi-auto) and a safety position, and has a carrying handle not unlike the Vietnam-era M16.
As of late 2010 the AR70/90 was supplemented in service by the new Beretta ARX-160 as part of the Italian 'Future Soldier Program'. It is expected that the ARX-160 will fully replace the AR70 in the coming decade.
