Weapon Background[edit]
Pulemyot Kalashnikova, a general purpose medium machinegun developed by a team headed by Mikhail Kalashnikov to meet the Union's demand for a 7.62x54mmR calibre machinegun. Success of PK lead to mass production and deviation of the weapon, PK was modernized in 1969 as PKM, PK and variants have service record as early as 1961 and continued to serve as a front-line infantry and mounted/coaxial weapon in the modern Russian army and other ex-Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact countries today. PK was also exported extensively and produced in many other countries under license.
PK utilize the Kalashnikov gas-operated rotary-bolt operating mechanism design, except the bolt and bolt carrier are oriented upside down. Differs from the rifle derived LMGs such as the RPK, PK fires from an open bolt, which helps to prevent the weapon from cooking off during long firing sessions. PK is able to achieve a cyclic rate of fire around 650 rounds per minute, effectively covering up to 1000m of firing range and up to 3000m of maximum firing range.
The weapon is fed with non-disintegrating munition belts housing 7.62x54mmR cartridge from the right side of the receiver, empty shells are ejected from the left, it is worth noting that PK is the first MG in the world to eject spent shells to the left of the gun. Munition belts can be chained to any length in unit increment of 25 rounds, 100, 200, 250 round capacity box magazines or even the 450-round "Scorpion" ammunition backpacks are available for PK and PK variant operators.
Aside from basic iron sight, the Warsaw Pact side-rail bracket located on the left side of the receiver serves as a mounting position for compatible optics. Other notable designs include the quick detachable barrel, the birch plywood laminated skeletal buttstock and a detachable bipod mounted on the gas cylinder beneath the barrel.
Notable PK variants include the modernized PKM, mounted/coaxial PKT, tripod mounted PKS and the later specially designed AEK-999 Barsook and PKP Pecheneg. The estimated amount of PK (all variants) produced during the Cold War by USSR and Warsaw Pact exceeds over 1,000,000. Other notable PK derivatives include the Yugoslav Zastava made M84/M09 and the Chinese Norinco made Type 80. PK and variants have seen extensive actions in conflicts all over the world after WW2, such as the Vietnam War, Chechen Wars, Gulf War, Yugoslav Wars and many conflicts in the middle east region.[1]
