The ARX-160 is a lightweight modular assault rifle presented to the Italian Armed Forces by Beretta. It was first introduced in 2008, with Beretta looking to have it replace the older AR70 currently in service with the Italian Army, as well as offer the ARX-106 for international contracts. To this end, Beretta used the AR70/90, the most common AR70 variant in service at the time, as a base for the design of their new rifle. Beretta aimed to improve the ergonomics and performance of the rifle while making it smaller and lighter than its predecessor. Their hopes were somewhat successful, with the A2 variant of the ARX-160 slowly becoming the standard service rifle for several branches of the Italian Armed Forces.

The ARX-160 is a gas-operated rotating bolt rifle, designed to be capable of firing different caliber cartridges with only simple refits. The ARX-160 is able to operate to an effective range of up to 500 metres, while also being able to achieve a rate of fire of 700 rounds per minute. The rifle's primary cartridge is the 5.56x45mm NATO round, but unlike other modular NATO rifle projects, such as the HK416 and HK417 that would use 7.62x51mm NATO, the secondary cartridge of choice for the ARX-160 is the Soviet 7.62x39mm M43. The parts kit that converts the ARX-160 to fire M43 ammo was introduced in 2012, while parts kits for other calibers such as the Soviet 5.45x39mm M74 and the 6.8mm Remington were planned but later cancelled. Two civilian semi-automatic variants, which cannot exchange parts with the ARX-160, make use of the .223 Remington (ARX-100) and .22 Long Rifle cartridges (ARX-160 22LR).

Due to the unusual combination of cartridge calibers, the magazine housing of the ARX-160 accepts both the NATO STANAG/C-Mag for 5.56 NATO ammo, and the AK47/AKM/RPK magazine for 7.62mm M43 ammo. A Kalashnikov-style "behind the well" mag release can also be fitted to further improve the user experience. The ARX-160 is fully ambidextrous, with mechanisms such as the STANAG style magazine release, charging handle, bolt release, and safety switch all being completely accessible on both sides. Even the empty shell ejection port can be moved to either side of the gun. Picatinny rails can be found along the top of the gun, as well as along the side and bottom of the barrel, allowing the rifle to mount various combat accessories and optics. Back-up iron sights are also provided should the user not have optics. The ARX-160 project also gave birth to a 40mm grenade launcher called the GLX-160, made specially to fit on the rails under the barrel of the ARX-160. The buttstock of the ARX-160 can be adjusted, while the A2 variant's buttstock is a side-folding model.

Many other military and law enforcement units in other nations have also adopted the ARX-160. The ARX-160 was also entered into both the US Army carbine competition and the French army competition, looking to replace the M4 Carbine and the FAMAS respectively. The rifle saw some active combat use with NATO forces during their involvement in the war in Afghanistan.<ref name = "AR160 Wiki">[[wikipedia:Beretta ARX160|Wikipedia entry on the ARX-160]]</ref>

Between 2008 and 2014 around 30,000 ARX160 have been supplied to the Italian Army, Italian Navy, Italian Air Force and Italian special forces in the specific version A2 and have been since used in several missions including Afghanistan. The current program aims to replace the older Beretta AR70/90 as standard assault rifle for the Italian Armed Forces.

Weapon Background[edit]

The rifle saw some active combat use with NATO forces during their involvement in the war in Afghanistan.[1]
