PNC Story/Dark 1-3/Script
Inside the Reverse Tower of Babylon.
System: [Verifying identity data: Intermediate Sanctifier - Faith.]
System: [Access permission verification complete. Now opening - Archive Area.]
Faith enters the vast hall, but finds someone else there.
Faith: …Nobody should be here at a time like this.
Raven: I am here to requisition the observation logs of the various sectors. Do you object to that?
Faith: …Lady Raven?!
Faith: Please forgive me for not immediately discerning your identity! Yo doubt the greater ones is the act of a Daemon[1]... But that was not my intention!
Raven: Humph. Don't be so scared. I can't be bothered to split hairs with you Intermediates.
Raven: Still, it's good to be alert. Cuts down on the number of times you have to return to the Pantheon.
Faith: …You are correct.
Raven: So tell me, what brings you here at a time like this?
Faith: It is because there are some slight abnormalities with the actions of Rossum's administrator. the time taken to repair each error constantly differs.
Faith: After committing my reports to the records, the patrol timings for Rossum were approved and staggered apart from the other sectors, while extra patrol rounds were scheduled.
Raven: I see. Go about your business, then.
Faith: A moment please, Lady Raven!
Raven: You had better have a good reason for making me stop.
Faith: I sincerely apologize, but there is one more matter that I find myself powerless to resolve…
Raven: Get to the point.
Faith: I am here to file the log of the 1632nd cleansing of abnormalities in the Rossum Sector.
Raven: …The 1632nd cleansing? Have your cleansing abilities withered away or something?
Faith: I am deeply ashamed about the matter.
Faith: But according to our law, the abnormalities of the Rossum administrator "Turing" cannot be resolved by such simple cleansings.
Raven: Well, your abilities ARE limited after all, so I'm hardly surprised.
Raven: Alright, tell me then. What's so abnormal about this Administrator Turing?
Faith: According to the design goals of the Rossum Sector, the sector's mission is to research the possibilities of AI breakthroughs.
Faith: There is nothing wrong with Turing's actions, but the AIs she creates violate the regulations of our laws during their growth.
Raven: So you're saying the agents she makes are fine at the start, but they exceed legal limits during their development process?
Faith: Yes. They become more flexible and they even learn how to get around the rules.
Faith: The existence of such beings will certainly destroy the order of the sector. They are seeds of chaos, like Daemons.
Raven: Well, if they grow into Daemons, then cleanse the Daemons. How much trouble can that be?
Faith: Yes, I have immediately cleansed these Irregular Agents. But… Turing feels that she has done nothing wrong.
Faith: Turing calls it growth. I cannot understand why she twisted her understanding of that concept.
Faith: Therefore, she persists in creating such agents.
Raven: There's nothing wrong with creating agents in itself, is there?
Faith: Not at all. The act of creation violates no laws, and the created agents are fine when they start out.
Faith: But once these agents grow, they pose a great threat to the sector. Therefore, I requested special patrols.
Raven: Isn't that enough?
Faith: How could that be enough?
Faith: Turing has not broken the law, yet she keeps repeating the same cycle over and over again…
Upon hearing the denial, Raven turns to look at Faith.
Raven: Do you pity her?
Upon meeting that gaze, as keen and sharp as a blade, faith immediately takes a knee, but she steels herself and continues her assertions.
Faith: …I am not showing her favoritism of any sort.
Faith: But continuing this for an extended period might not be an ideal strategy… I know I am incapable, so I was hoping to draw upon your abilities, Lady Raven.
Faith: Although Lord Hesperus once used hard-line methods in the past, that was because we had no choice. Lord Eosphorus' efforts over these years have been to repair the image of the Sanctifiers…
Faith's voice grows softer as she speaks, and her final words diffuse into the air.
Several seconds later, Raven looks back toward the Archives.
Raven: If I were you, I would look for a way to isolate the abnormality.
Raven: You might be able to find a similar precedent in the Archives.
Faith: Thank you… for your understanding, Lady Raven.
Raven does not answer her. Instead, she promptly leaves the Archives.
Faith breathes a sigh of relief, then stands up and accesses the log function.
System: [Now logging the results of abnormality handling in Rossum Sector, serial number 1632…]
System: [Log complete.]
Faith: That's done, then. Now…
Faith: After this, I should be going through the precedents… Hng?!
All the operational data of every single Sanctifier mission, from the very first one until now, pours into Faith. Unable to process it in time, Faith ends up crashing for a few seconds under the impact of the data.
Several seconds later, she finally comes to her senses. Her operation logic streams warnings at her. Faith grits her teeth and peruses the data.
Faith: One session is just not enough to fully read and parse all this data, and I'll only find an answer after five or six special patrols… But…
Eosphorus: I have tasked you with the protection of this entire region. Do you know why?
Eosphorus: Unlike those children who use their intellect on sloth and evasion…
Eosphorus: You are braver and more resilient than them.
Faith: I…
Eosphorus: Engrave the credo of the Sanctifiers into your heart.
Faith: Yes.
Faith: We hone our blades in the darkness, we defend order in the face of chaos, we bear light in the long night.
Faith: We must not abuse our power because we are strong, and neither can we abandon our responsibilities because we are weak.
Faith: For we heed the revelations of God, and we act to carry out His will.
Faith: Because we obey the same voice, together in eternity.
Faith: …We must not abuse our power because we are strong, and neither can we abandon our responsibilities because we are weak.
Faith: No matter how arduous my path… In order to light the beacon of order, to let the agents of Margasea believe from the bottom of their hearts, I must do this.
As she repeats the creed to herself, Faith's gaze grows more determined.
Faith: Yes. For we heed the revelations of God, and we act to carry out His will.
