Record 1[edit]
Originally codenamed WA2000, Makiatto operated by herself in the Green Zones for a long time after leaving Griffin. Afterwards, at Springfield's urging, she became a partner of the Zucchero Café. Calm, focused, and efficient - these are Makiatto's calling cards and what she expected of herself.
Her combat skills were extraordinary, but she disliked working with others and had always been a loner. She often said that she didn't need many friends, but she had never refused whenever Springfield invited her to enjoy a cup of caramel macchiato. At the insistence of everyone in Zucchero, this lone wolf who never once joined a pack finally found herself becoming a part of a new group. With the help of Zucchero's intelligence network, she finally managed to contact the Commander she'd been searching for all this time and joined up with them.
Perhaps this was an occupational disease of being a sniper, but she's used to hiding her thoughts and feelings with hard denials. Unfortunately, her stammering and her blushing face often betrayed what's in her heart. That said, she had no resistance whatsoever to fluffy little animals. Perhaps one day, someone will bring out her honesty, a feat currently reserved for 10x sugar caramel macchiatos and small animals.
"You dummy, this is a dangerous mission! Be more careful! ...I-it's not as though I'm paying special attention to your condition or anything! That's not the point! In any case, make sure you call me if you run into trouble!" As always, Makiatto's body is honest where her mouth is not.
Record 2[edit]
Where there is light, there must be darkness. Under the moonlight, a cold gun barrel emerges from the shadows, taking aim at a target 800 meters away. One shot, one kill. Very good. The gun smoke vanishes into the night, and the shadows are already empty. The silence is such that one might think there has never been anything there in the first place. Calm, efficient, and professional - that is Makiatto.
After leaving Griffin, she often walks in the shadows alone, accomplishing one unimaginably difficult mission after another. She never wastes her effort on clearing away annoying mooks during her assignments; the only thing in her sights are high-value targets. She doesn't stoop to taking pride in body counts; the true value of a work of art lies in its rarity and technical difficulty, after all.
... But the current Makiatto finds herself walking dogs, searching for cats, and holding herself in to stalk targets and take pictures of unseemly conduct. How can this haughty and aloof executor have "fallen" so far? Perhaps the only person other than herself who can comment on this is the manager of the Zucchero Café. "It's not like I'm returning her a favor... A-and it's definitely not because I'm looking for someone! This is call an equivalent exchange! It's cooperation! COOPERATION, got that?!"
Record 3[edit]
Sometimes, violin music can be heard from Makiatto's room. While she has her artistic taste, her own capabilities when it comes to art and music are a little lacking. Still, despite her slow improvement, she has kept up with her practice. Whenever someone asks about it, she blushes and says that she's just working off stress, but her somewhat clumsy music contains her unspoken emotions.
I wonder when I started doing this... Perhaps it was when that person said that I "looked outstanding" while wearing that evening dress and carrying that violin case. Ever since, I've been filled with the urge to put on a proper recital for them. It's been so many years since then, but I still can't forget the light in their eyes when they said it.
Damnit... Does that dork even know how hard I've been working at this? Maybe I should just go find them and put on a show... No, t-that would be too obvious! Also, at my current level, there's no way I can - Waaaaaaah, why am I bothered about what they think? I-I'm practicing for myself! I need to work hard and play better to match my perfect image! That's right!
Record 4[edit]
"Whaaaaat? This new special blend is fuuuulll of Sharkry's feelings~ How could it NOT be yummy? You're the first one Sharkry offered it to~ And I even added double the sugar just for you♥"
"W-who asked you to specially prepare this for me... And besides, double isn't enough, don't you think?" Makiatto frowns, but she still picks up the cup and takes a sip.
"I-it's not that bad, but it's still a little lacking compared to Centaureissi's macchiatos... N-not that Centaureissi's caramel macchiatos are perfect or anything!"
"Aw, don't you get tired of blowing hot and cold all the time? Sometimes, it would be better if you were a little more honest♥"
A short distance away, Springfield and Centaureissi watch as the two of them tease and yell at each other. Centaureissi can't help but sigh.
"Manager, wouldn't it be better to let Miss Makiatto work by herself rather than make her stay with us? From what I can tell, she seems happier when she's by herself."
"Then you're not looking closely enough, Centaureissi. Makiatto's been alone for far too long. The truth is... she also wants to be with everyone else. She's just not used to interacting with others; rather, she's not quite sure how to do it."
Springfield's gaze shifts from Centaureissi to the two girls who are a short distance away. Makiatto is pouting in annoyance, but her cup is empty, while Sharkry, who's standing beside her, has a smug smile on her face.
"In any case... let's just give her more time."
Record 5[edit]
"Dammit... Is this the end for me..."
Makiatto crouches behind the ruined wall, her thoughts racing as she looks at her right leg, which has been hit and incapacitated.
The enemy machine gun fire is far too intense. Unless she takes out their gunner ASAP, it'll chew through her cover sooner or later, at which point she'll be reduced to scrap by a hail of lead, without the enemy even needing to send men around to flank her. However, while she knows where the enemy machine gunner is, he's hidden behind cover himself, and she can't get at him. Unless... Unless her bullet can change its course and curve behind cover after being fired.
Makiatto narrows her eyes, focusing on a piece of armor plate near the machine gun. Perhaps... Could she bank her shot? But doing so would be incredibly difficult, especially in such chaotic conditions...
...Hmph! Nothing's impossible for a true professional!
Makiatto raises her gun, takes aim, and calculates the wind's direction and velocity. Then, she clenches her teeth and pulls the trigger.
"Bang!" The gunshot isn't as loud as expected, but it immediately silences the machine gun's flame-spewing volley.
Makiatto breathes a sigh of relief, preparing to deal with the leftover mooks—dammit, dammit, dammit, why did she have to run out of rounds NOW?!
"...If I'd known, I would have listened to Springfield's advice and brought more people along." In the end, fighting alone meant...
Then, she hears the sounds of the enemies wailing in pain and fear. What's going on?
Makiatto cautiously pokes her head out and sees a drone hovering mid-air. Enemies lie on the ground around it.
Then, as though sensing her thoughts, Makiatto's communicator beeps, and a familiar voice reaches her ears.
"Sorry about that, it took some doing to get the drone over there... Anyway, I hope backup came in time?"
The corners of her eyes fill with tears, but Makiatto bites her lip.
"W-who asked you to show up? I could have taken care of all this by myself!"
"Well, Springfield said you hadn't come back by the appointed time, so I got worried and came looking for you... Look at you, you're hurt. Come on, hold on to the drone and come back. I'll be waiting for you."
Makiatto is at a loss for words, while her face is scalding hot. She forcefully clears her nose and holds on tight to the handrail on the drone.
"...I-I won't forgive you if you come later next time!"
Record 6[edit]
"Hey, I've got a question for you." During a break in my work, Makiatto comes looking for me. Her eyes seem a little shifty.
"Hm? Go ahead."
"What is 12 times 12?" "144."
"Do people in Germany drive on the right or the left-hand side of the road?" "...On the right. Why are you asking all this? Are you playing Trivial Pursuit or something?"
"I'm... It's for your own good! It's to train your brain! Besides, it's not like these questions are hard for you, right?"
"While that's true..."
"Hmph! In that case, close your eyes! I'm upping the difficulty."
I sigh and do as she says. Strangely enough, Makiatto seems really excited about this. Normally, she wouldn't play such games...
"What color is my hair ribbon?" "Red."
"What do I like best?" "Caramel macchiatos with 10x sugars."
"Hmph... And who did you last have wine with on Christmas?" "Uh... You?"
"And who helped you bring those supplies back before the Collapse storm hit the day before yesterday?" "That was you."
"And who played the violin for you last night?" "Also you."
"And who do you like best?" "That would be..."
Oh, I get it. That's what she wants. I open my eyes but say nothing, watching as Makiatto's face turns bright red.
"W-who said you could open your eyes?!"
"Hmm, haven't I answered this question several times already?"
Makiatto looks away. "What the heck... I don't want to hear 'I like all of you' or anything like that..."
"Er... So what kind of answer would you like?"
"...Are you an idiot? What would be the point if I told you?! Think hard! W-when I ask you again, you're not to give me that answer!"
And with that, Makiatto stomps on my foot before storming out of the training room.
Record 7[edit]
I knock on Makiatto's door.
"Go away... I-I don't want to talk to a dork like you who can't appreciate good music!" Her muffled voice comes from behind the door, and I can see her shadow shifting through the gaps around it. I know Makiatto is pacing around inside.
"How can you say that? I never once said your music was bad, right?"
"Then why don't you tell me why you want to listen to other people play the violin when you have me around? I mean, it's not like I'm free to play for you anytime you want... But I still want an explanation for that!"
Ah, so that is why you're upset.
"That's because... It's only when I listen to others play that I realize how good you are. And of course, it's only after listening to all that music that I realized that small mis—I mean, improvisations like yours are better than just rattling the score off by rote. Speaking of which, I recorded your concert from earlier, I guess I need to listen to it again—"
"Y-you what?!" The door suddenly flies open and I nearly fall into Makiatto's arms. She grabs me without a second thought and then her face turns red.
"Oh, you finally opened up... Well, am I still a dork who doesn't appreciate good music?"
"Hmph... Don't ask other people and don't listen to any recordings! I-I'm standing right here, aren't I?!"
"So you're willing to talk to me now?"
"I-I never said that!"
Record 8[edit]
The weather in the contamination zones has been bad recently, and the Collapse storms have been more savage than ever. While the Elmo has managed to avoid them thanks to intel from B.R.I.E.F., we couldn't fully escape their effects, and we've lost comms with the outside world.
Fortunately, there are only a few people temporarily away from the MBV on missions, and Makiatto just happened to be in a nearby satellite city on a personal commission. I stopped the MBV in a safe region for the time being and updated the Elmo's coordinates. Once the signal has been restored, it'll be automatically transmitted. I just hope the storm will have passed by the time they come back...
Just as the thought passes through my mind, I feel my comms terminal vibrate. When I pick it up, I see that the coordinates have been sent. Looks like the storm is far enough away from us. My screen is flooded with multiple messages, but soon their senders are all the same person.
"Hey... where's the Elmo?"
"Why are you ignoring me? I-I'm really busy, you know! If you don't answer me now, I won't make time for you in the future!"
"...Hmph, is this some kind of a new test, 'I'll only let you on board if you can find me' or something? Don't think this is enough to stop me! Just you wait, I'll find you right away!"
"Commander... Are you planning to sneak off again without me?"
"Haaaah, I heard from a nearby underground broker that you were taking shelter from the storm. D-don't get me wrong, it wasn't like I was worried about you or anything! I'll be there right away!"
"Where did you go... Stay safe you jerk..."
"I-if anything happens to you, if you end up vanishing—I-I won't let you off the hook!"
I can't help but smile as I see Makiatto's stream of messages. Just as I'm about to reply to her, I hear a series of hurried footsteps from the corridor. Then, the ops room door opens, and Makiatto rushes in and grabs my hand. However, she seems to have realized something and rushes back out again.
So smooth and fluid are her movements that all I feel is the trembling on my hand and all I catch is a brief glimpse of the moistness in her reddened eyes.
"Commander, you jerk!" I hear Makiatto yell from outside the room.
I should go talk to her tonight.
