Record 1

Originally codenamed WA2000, Makiatto operated by herself in the Green Zones for a long time after leaving Griffin. Afterwards, at Springfield's urging, she became a partner of the Zucchero Café. Calm, focused, and efficient - these are Makiatto's calling cards and what she expected of herself.

Her combat skills were extraordinary, but she disliked working with others and had always been a loner. She often said that she didn't need many friends, but she had never refused whenever Springfield invited her to enjoy a cup of caramel macchiato. At the insistence of everyone in Zucchero, this lone wolf who never once joined a pack finally found herself becoming a part of a new group. With the help of Zucchero's intelligence network, she finally managed to contact the Commander she'd been searching for all this time and joined up with them.

Perhaps this was an occupational disease of being a sniper, but she's used to hiding her thoughts and feelings with hard denials. Unfortunately, her stammering and her blushing face often betrayed what's in her heart. That said, she had no resistance whatsoever to fluffy little animals. Perhaps one day, someone will bring out her honesty, a feat currently reserved for 10x sugar caramel macchiatos and small animals.

"You dummy, this is a dangerous mission! Be more careful! ...I-it's not as though I'm paying special attention to your condition or anything! That's not the point! In any case, make sure you call me if you run into trouble!" As always, Makiatto's body is honest where her mouth is not.

Record 2

Where there is light, there must be darkness. Under the moonlight, a cold gun barrel emerges from the shadows, taking aim at a target 800 meters away. One shot, one kill. Very good. The gun smoke vanishes into the night, and the shadows are already empty. The silence is such that one might think there has never been anything there in the first place. Calm, efficient, and professional - that is Makiatto.

After leaving Griffin, she often walks in the shadows alone, accomplishing one unimaginably difficult mission after another. She never wastes her effort on clearing away annoying mooks during her assignments; the only thing in her sights are high-value targets. She doesn't stoop to taking pride in body counts; the true value of a work of art lies in its rarity and technical difficulty, after all.

... But the current Makiatto finds herself walking dogs, searching for cats, and holding herself in to stalk targets and take pictures of unseemly conduct. How can this haughty and aloof executor have "fallen" so far? Perhaps the only person other than herself who can comment on this is the manager of the Zucchero Café. "It's not like I'm returning her a favor... A-and it's definitely not because I'm looking for someone! This is call an equivalent exchange! It's cooperation! COOPERATION, got that?!"

Record 3

Sometimes, violin music can be heard from Makiatto's room. While she has her artistic taste, her own capabilities when it comes to art and music are a little lacking. Still, despite her slow improvement, she has kept up with her practice. Whenever someone asks about it, she blushes and says that she's just working off stress, but her somewhat clumsy music contains her unspoken emotions.

I wonder when I started doing this... Perhaps it was when that person said that I "looked outstanding" while wearing that evening dress and carrying that violin case. Ever since, I've been filled with the urge to put on a proper recital for them. It's been so many years since then, but I still can't forget the light in their eyes when they said it.

Damnit... Does that dork even know how hard I've been working at this? Maybe I should just go find them and put on a show... No, t-that would be too obvious! Also, at my current level, there's no way I can - Waaaaaaah, why am I bothered about what they think? I-I'm practicing for myself! I need to work hard and play better to match my perfect image! That's right!

Record 4

"Whaaaaat? This new special blend is fuuuulll of Sharkry's feelings~ How could it NOT be yummy? You're the first one Sharkry offered it to~ And I even added double the sugar just for you♥"
"W-who asked you to specially prepare this for me... And besides, double isn't enough, don't you think?" Makiatto frowns, but she still picks up the cup and takes a sip.
"I-it's not that bad, but it's still a little lacking compared to Centaureissi's macchiatos... N-not that Centaureissi's caramel macchiatos are perfect or anything!"
"Aw, don't you get tired of blowing hot and cold all the time? Sometimes, it would be better if you were a little more honest♥"
A short distance away, Springfield and Centaureissi watch as the two of them tease and yell at each other. Centaureissi can't help but sigh.

"Manager, wouldn't it be better to let Miss Makiatto work by herself rather than make her stay with us? From what I can tell, she seems happier when she's by herself."
"Then you're not looking closely enough, Centaureissi. Makiatto's been alone for far too long. The truth is... she also wants to be with everyone else. She's just not used to interacting with others; rather, she's not quite sure how to do it."
Springfield's gaze shifts from Centaureissi to the two girls who are a short distance away. Makiatto is pouting in annoyance, but her cup is empty, while Sharkry, who's standing beside her, has a smug smile on her face.
"In any case... let's just give her more time."

Record 5

"Dammit... Is this the end for me..."
Makiatto crouches behind the ruined wall, her thoughts racing as she looks at her right leg, which has been hit and incapacitated.
The enemy machine gun fire is far too intense. Unless she takes out their gunner ASAP, it'll chew through her cover sooner or later, at which point she'll be reduced to scrap by a hail of lead, without the enemy even needing to send men around to flank her. However, while she knows where the enemy machine gunner is, he's hidden behind cover himself, and she can't get at him. Unless... Unless her bullet can change its course and curve behind cover after being fired.
Makiatto narrows her eyes, focusing on a piece of armor plate near the machine gun. Perhaps... Could she bank her shot? But doing so would be incredibly difficult, especially in such chaotic conditions...
...Hmph! Nothing's impossible for a true professional!

Makiatto raises her gun, takes aim, and calculates the wind's direction and velocity. Then, she clenches her teeth and pulls the trigger.
"Bang!" The gunshot isn't as loud as expected, but it immediately silences the machine gun's flame-spewing volley.
Makiatto breathes a sigh of relief, preparing to deal with the leftover mooks—dammit, dammit, dammit, why did she have to run out of rounds NOW?!
"...If I'd known, I would have listened to Springfield's advice and brought more people along." In the end, fighting alone meant...
Then, she hears the sounds of the enemies wailing in pain and fear. What's going on?
Makiatto cautiously pokes her head out and sees a drone hovering mid-air. Enemies lie on the ground around it.
Then, as though sensing her thoughts, Makiatto's communicator beeps, and a familiar voice reaches her ears.
"Sorry about that, it took some doing to get the drone over there... Anyway, I hope backup came in time?"
The corners of her eyes fill with tears, but Makiatto bites her lip.
"W-who asked you to show up? I could have taken care of all this by myself!"
"Well, Springfield said you hadn't come back by the appointed time, so I got worried and came looking for you... Look at you, you're hurt. Come on, hold on to the drone and come back. I'll be waiting for you."
Makiatto is at a loss for words, while her face is scalding hot. She forcefully clears her nose and holds on tight to the handrail on the drone.
"...I-I won't forgive you if you come later next time!"

Record 6

"Hey, I've got a question for you." During a break in my work, Makiatto comes looking for me. Her eyes seem a little shifty.
"Hm? Go ahead."
"What is 12 times 12?" "144."
"Do people in Germany drive on the right or the left-hand side of the road?" "...On the right. Why are you asking all this? Are you playing Trivial Pursuit or something?"
"I'm... It's for your own good! It's to train your brain! Besides, it's not like these questions are hard for you, right?"
"While that's true..."
"Hmph! In that case, close your eyes! I'm upping the difficulty."
I sigh and do as she says. Strangely enough, Makiatto seems really excited about this. Normally, she wouldn't play such games...
"What color is my hair ribbon?" "Red."
"What do I like best?" "Caramel macchiatos with 10x sugars."
"Hmph... And who did you last have wine with on Christmas?" "Uh... You?"
"And who helped you bring those supplies back before the Collapse storm hit the day before yesterday?" "That was you."
"And who played the violin for you last night?" "Also you."
"And who do you like best?" "That would be..."
Oh, I get it. That's what she wants. I open my eyes but say nothing, watching as Makiatto's face turns bright red.
"W-who said you could open your eyes?!"
"Hmm, haven't I answered this question several times already?"
Makiatto looks away. "What the heck... I don't want to hear 'I like all of you' or anything like that..."
"Er... So what kind of answer would you like?"
"...Are you an idiot? What would be the point if I told you?! Think hard! W-when I ask you again, you're not to give me that answer!"
And with that, Makiatto stomps on my foot before storming out of the training room.

Record 7

I knock on Makiatto's door.
"Go away... I-I don't want to talk to a dork like you who can't appreciate good music!" Her muffled voice comes from behind the door, and I can see her shadow shifting through the gaps around it. I know Makiatto is pacing around inside.
"How can you say that? I never once said your music was bad, right?"
"Then why don't you tell me why you want to listen to other people play the violin when you have me around? I mean, it's not like I'm free to play for you anytime you want... But I still want an explanation for that!"
Ah, so that is why you're upset.
"That's because... It's only when I listen to others play that I realize how good you are. And of course, it's only after listening to all that music that I realized that small mis—I mean, improvisations like yours are better than just rattling the score off by rote. Speaking of which, I recorded your concert from earlier, I guess I need to listen to it again—"
"Y-you what?!" The door suddenly flies open and I nearly fall into Makiatto's arms. She grabs me without a second thought and then her face turns red.
"Oh, you finally opened up... Well, am I still a dork who doesn't appreciate good music?"
"Hmph... Don't ask other people and don't listen to any recordings! I-I'm standing right here, aren't I?!"
"So you're willing to talk to me now?"
"I-I never said that!"

Record 8

The weather in the contamination zones has been bad recently, and the Collapse storms have been more savage than ever. While the Elmo has managed to avoid them thanks to intel from B.R.I.E.F., we couldn't fully escape their effects, and we've lost comms with the outside world.
Fortunately, there are only a few people temporarily away from the MBV on missions, and Makiatto just happened to be in a nearby satellite city on a personal commission. I stopped the MBV in a safe region for the time being and updated the Elmo's coordinates. Once the signal has been restored, it'll be automatically transmitted. I just hope the storm will have passed by the time they come back...
Just as the thought passes through my mind, I feel my comms terminal vibrate. When I pick it up, I see that the coordinates have been sent. Looks like the storm is far enough away from us. My screen is flooded with multiple messages, but soon their senders are all the same person.
"Hey... where's the Elmo?"
"Why are you ignoring me? I-I'm really busy, you know! If you don't answer me now, I won't make time for you in the future!"
"...Hmph, is this some kind of a new test, 'I'll only let you on board if you can find me' or something? Don't think this is enough to stop me! Just you wait, I'll find you right away!"
"Commander... Are you planning to sneak off again without me?"
"Haaaah, I heard from a nearby underground broker that you were taking shelter from the storm. D-don't get me wrong, it wasn't like I was worried about you or anything! I'll be there right away!"
"Where did you go... Stay safe you jerk..."
"I-if anything happens to you, if you end up vanishing—I-I won't let you off the hook!"
I can't help but smile as I see Makiatto's stream of messages. Just as I'm about to reply to her, I hear a series of hurried footsteps from the corridor. Then, the ops room door opens, and Makiatto rushes in and grabs my hand. However, she seems to have realized something and rushes back out again.
So smooth and fluid are her movements that all I feel is the trembling on my hand and all I catch is a brief glimpse of the moistness in her reddened eyes.
"Commander, you jerk!" I hear Makiatto yell from outside the room.
I should go talk to her tonight.

Memories

Extra Missionem 1

(I’m on the streets of CHE-02. Night has fallen and the street lanterns are beginning to light up. People are starting to return from the White Zone and the satellite city that was empty in the day begins to feel alive now.)
(I’ve borrowed a car from the cafe for this shadowing mission with Makiatto. She’s holding her chin in her hands and glaring unhappily at our mission objective.)
Makiatto
Everyone in the city’s busy with work, but our target here is enjoying life and leisurely wandering around in the streets with a girl on his arm.
Commander
What’s wrong? Are you upset?
Commander
Personally, I think being able to collect a paycheck at zero risk to ourselves is a pretty good deal.
Makiatto
Hmph, even if some clueless clod came to look for trouble with us, I’d blow him away in one shot.
Makiatto
And I told you that I’d handle the driving so you could get some rest, but you said you were worried I couldn’t handle it by myself, so you wouldn’t let me. Don’t you think you’re taking me too lightly?
Commander
Haha, alright, I’m confident that entrusting my personal security to you during my stay in CHE-02 will be the right decision.
Makiatto
Of course, I’m not as frivolous and unreliable as Sharkry, after all. I used to run assignments like this all by myself in the past…
Makiatto
Still, don’t you think you’re working yourself too hard? All your client did was get you credentials to enter the city. Why do you even have to do this much stuff for him?
Commander
I mean, the pay’s good too.
Commander
It’s just a shame that I can only bring one Doll into the city with me.
Makiatto
…It’s all jobs and pay with you.
(Makiatto pouts in annoyance as she looks out the window.)
Makiatto
Although… Since we’re out here by ourselves, i-is there anything you’d like to—
Commander
No way!
(I stomp hard on the brakes.)
(The target we’ve been trailing all this while has suddenly entered a fancy hotel restaurant with his feminine companion.)
Makiatto
What>! Is it an attack?! Get down!
Makiatto
…Wait a minute, is that—?
Commander
Dammit, this isn’t on the expense list the client gave me. I’m going to squeeze him for more money later. Anyway, we shouldn’t worry about so much right now; let’s go after him first.
Commander
What’s wrong, Makiatto?
(The lack of a reply makes me turn back to look at Makiatto. She is staring straight at the entrance to the hotel, her face bright red.)
(I follow her gaze to the little sign above the restaurant’s sign, which reads—)
Commander
…”For Couples Only”?
Commander
Wait a minute… so this restaurant’s running a promotion…
(I scratch my nose in embarrassment and turn back to Makiatto.)
Commander
So, er, want to go in with me?
Makiatto
O-of course!
Makiatto
It’s for the sake of the mission! If we don’t go in after him, how will we…
(Makiatto turns her face away bashfully as she replies. Before I can reply, she’s already gotten off the car.)
(I park it properly before catching up with Makiatto and walk toward the hotel by her side.)
(As Makiatto glances at my hand, I suddenly realize what’s on her mind and deliberately step away so she’s at arm’s length. But… is it me, or does she also seem unhappy with that?)
(The pink hearts on the sign are flashing—)
Server
Excuse me, sir, madam.
(As expected, we are stopped at the hotel entrance by a waiter.)
(Fortunately, I’m prepared for this.)
Commander
Oh, pardon me. We just happened to be passing by and we don’t have reservations.
Commander
Your establishment looks quite classy and I can see a few seats inside. Could you help make some arrangements for us?
Server
Dear customer, I sincerely apologize but as the sign says, our restaurant is only serving couples today and we will not be taking single guests. I am afraid I must ask you to grace us with your patronage another day.
(While we have been rebuffed, I won’t allow ourselves to be kept outside just like that.)
(I glance at Makiatto and give her a meaningful look. She realizes what I mean and blushes. I proceed to apply more pressure on the waiter.)
Commander
Single, you say?
Commander
Are the two of us not a couple?
Server
But sir, it would seem your companion is a… Doll?
Makiatto
…So, so what?!
Makiatto
D-Do Dolls not count as customers?
(Makiatto’s face is bright red but she forces herself to stay strong and even manages to glare haughtily at the waiter.)
Server
Um…
Server
Well, you have a point, Miss Doll, but like I said, the seats at our restaurant today are reserved for lovers only…
Makiatto
(Upon hearing the word “lovers”, Makiatto immediately clams up.)
(This isn’t good—)
Commander
But we ARE lovers, aren’t we?
Makiatto
…Hah?
Server
Er…
Commander
Which part of us says that we are NOT lovers?
Server
I sincerely apologize, but…
Server
You see, our establishment has not served a Doll and human couple before, and the city’s ordinances don’t seem to confer any legal status to such pairings…
(The waiter looks apologetically at us and he glances at the distance between Makiatto and me. Meanwhile, Makiatto is stock still, like she’s crashed.)
(Upon seeing this, an idea strikes and I reach out to pull her over before complaining out loud.)
Commander
And what makes a couple, hm? Aren’t they two people who like and love each other?
Commander
Makiatto and I love each other. Our feelings are mutual. Doesn’t that make us a couple, regardless of whether we’re humans or Dolls? Do you need the URNC to issue a certificate stating that we’re a couple?
Server
But… I…
Makiatto
(I can feel Makiatto’s shoulder through the hand I’m using to grip it, and her frame temperature is rising rapidly. The more I say, the more she tenses up.)
Server
But… Miss Doll here seems…
(As the waiter directs a dubious look at us, Makiatto grabs my arm. I feel her hot breath on the side of my face before she stands on her tiptoes and quickly kisses me on the cheek.)
(Then, as though she’s venting her rage, Makiatto rounds on the waiter, her glare as sharp as a razor blade.)
Makiatto
…Well?! Is that enough?!
Makiatto
Or do you need us to do even more for you?!
Server
No, no, please, that’s enough. This way, please, sir, madam…
(The waiter frantically leads us in.)
(With my arm still wrapped around Makiatto, who has gone as rigid as an iron sculpture, we slowly enter the restaurant.)
(Now that we’ve entered, I verify the target’s location. It seems he’s just having a meal as part of an ordinary date, and Makiatto and I sigh in relief.)
(I pull away from the waiter and whisper into Makiatto’s ear.)
Commander
Sorry about that. Thanks for playing along.
(Makiatto’s shoulders stiffen up again.)
Commander
It’s all for the sake of the mission.
(I feel her shoulders quiver in my grip and hurriedly let go.)
Makiatto
The mission?
Makiatto
(Sigh) The mission… So it was for the mission, I see.
Makiatto
Yes, everything is for the mission. Of course. That’s right. It’s all for the mission.
Server
This way please, dear customers.
Makiatto
Um, thanks.
(Makiatto takes a moist towelette from the waiter and just as she passes in front of me—)
Commander
Ack! That hurt…
(She stomps on my right foot.)
Makiatto
What are you gawking at? Since it’s for the mission, you should hop to it already!

Extra Missionem 2

(It is a weekend afternoon, and the satellite city’s streets are bustling with activity.)
(I’m seated by one of Zucchero’s windows, looking out at the street view.)
(There is a warmly-decorated building across the street, beyond the milling crowds. Some time later, our protection target will be holding a party there.)
Makiatto
What are you looking at? You seem out of it.
(Makiatto takes a seat opposite me with a cup of coffee in hand.)
Commander
It’s nothing.
Commander
I just wanted to familiarize myself with the mission environment before we begin so we aren’t caught off guard in the moment.
Makiatto
Makiatto
While Zucchero has now been taken over by civilian Dolls, the surroundings isn’t much different from how it was before we left.
Makiatto
I’ve already marked all the places I can use as a sniper’s perch. If anyone actually tries to attack us, they won’t live to regret their mistake.
Commander
You’re so reliable, Makiatto. This trip’s so much easier with you around.
Makiatto
But of course. I’m an elite Doll of the Elmo.
Makiatto
Here.
(Makiatto feigns nonchalance as she slides the coffee across the table, turning the handle so it’s facing me.)
Makiatto
Try it.
Commander
Thank you.
(I pick up the cup of coffee without giving it much thought, still looking out the window.)
(As I bring it to my mouth and take a sip, my tastebuds are hammered by the richness born of an excess of sugar syrup and I can’t help but frown.)
Commander
(Coughs) Wow, this coffee is sweet.
Commander
Do people in the satellite cities always take their coffee this sweet?
Makiatto
Tsk, talk about poor taste… and I even went easy on the sugar too.
(Makiatto glances at my face and frowns too. Then she gestures to the counter.)
Makiatto
Eh, forget it. Waitress, bring a black coffee for him.
Commander
That’s okay. This is fine.
Makiatto
Hah? Didn’t you just say it was too sweet?
Commander
Well, coffee comes in all flavors, including sweet. Plus, it would be a waste to just pour it away.
Commander
Don’t worry, I’ll finish it.
Makiatto
It’s just a coffee, so why are you making a big deal out of it…
Makiatto
Fine, but remember, I didn’t force you to drink it. If you end up saying you can’t finish it, don’t expect any sympathy from me.
(Makiatto looks out the corner of her eye and sneaks a peek at my reaction. I smile and nod to her.)
(Her face turns bright red and she immediately turns to look out the window, avoiding my gaze.)
(Ever since our reunion, Makiatto seems to have had something on her mind regarding me. However, if she doesn’t want to talk about it, I can’t exactly force her to do so.)
(I do the same and look out the window, enjoying the city’s scenery.)
(The wind chime at the cafe’s doorway tinkles from time to time. A sweet fragrance fills the air around the table, and the afternoon is peaceful and quiet…)
(Time slowly goes by.)
Makiatto
What’s with you? You’ve been staring outside all this time. Is the city really so interesting?
Commander
Yup. I’ve spent a long time in the Yellow Zones, so coming to the Green Zones every now and then is quite a novel experience.
Makiatto
…Why do you keep staying in the Yellow Zones if you’re so interested in the Green Zones, anyway?
Commander
But I’m here with you now, aren’t I?
Makiatto
Oh, uh—that’s fine too.
Makiatto
Well, you’ve spent some time in the Green Zone for a while now, so how does it feel? Better than the Yellow Zones, right?
Commander
Well… that depends on how you look at it.
Commander
The people in the Green Zones are busy and they have hard lives, but cities are being rebuilt thanks to their hard work and they’re coming back to life. You can see it in the eyes of the people on the street; there’s hope for life in them.
Commander
It’s hard going, but their safety is assured and they’re gradually gaining more time and energy to live their own lives. So, how should I put it… Things are pretty good for them? However you want to spin it, it beats the hell out of getting a mouthful of sand in a Collapse storm.
Makiatto
But you chose to go live in the contamination zones in the first place. How come you’re so envious of these Green Zone people all of a sudden?
Commander
I think everyone would appreciate more comfort in their lives.
Makiatto
So from what you’re saying, are you telling me that you want to settle down in a Green Zone again?
(Makiatto steals a glance at me and meshes her fingers, but I’m too lost in my thoughts to notice what she’s doing.)
(Coming back, huh—Can I truly come back and enjoy the peace and harmony that the URNC has built?)
(The excessive sugar levels start causing me to crash out and I soon abandon that line of thought. Instead, I turn to Makiatto and shake my head.)
Commander
I guess not.
Commander
The way I look at the Green Zones is like looking at that storefront through the display windows.
Commander
The stuff in there is laid out nicely, the products are beautiful and well-made… but they don’t belong to me. And even if I wanted them, I couldn’t pay the price that would require.
Commander
In fact, I can’t imagine myself even having them…
Commander
Perhaps someone who’s used to living in the Yellow Zones is suited to the Collapse storms there. Hey, at least there’s freedom.
Makiatto
Freedom…
(Makiatto’s muttering makes me realize that the mood’s gotten a little heavy. I pick up that cup of over-sweetened coffee and down a mouthful of it.)
Commander
Plus, ever since that Development Agreement was ratified, housing prices in the satellite cities have spiked.
Commander
Considering how little I make in contamination zones, even if I wanted to come back, the best I could do here would be a little shack under a bridge.
Makiatto
…No way I’d let you live in a shack.
Commander
Hm?
Makiatto
I said, as long as I’m around, I won’t let you live in a shack!
Commander
Hehe. Thank you, Makiatto.
Makiatto
…What are you even thanking me for, I haven’t even done anything yet.
(Makiatto doesn’t say anything else after that, and silence fills the air once again.)
(As the daylight slowly fades, I finish the last of the coffee in one gulp and prepare to wrap up our work for today.)
Commander

Makiatto, let’s head back.

Waitress, bill—
Makiatto
Don’t, don’t you dare!
Makiatto
(Clears throat) I mean, wouldn’t paying the bill here be pointless?
Makiatto
I mean, it’s just transferring money from one pocket to another. What would be the point?
Commander
Actually, it’s not like I’m pocketing Zucchero’s profits. And besides, I don’t mind supporting local businesses.
Makiatto
Tsk, what a pain! I-in that case, it’s my treat!
Makiatto
…Why are you staring at me like that? How could I make someone who can barely afford to live in a shack under a bridge pay for his own drinks?!
Commander
Haha.
Commander
Alright, then. Thank you, boss lady! You’re so generous, boss lady!
Makiatto
Tsk, let’s just go…
(After that, we leave the cafe side by side.)
(An unwashed coffee shaker sits on the counter, along with ten-odd opened sugar packets which radiate a faint sweet aroma.)
(They fade into the distance behind me with the sound of Zucchero’s wind chime.)

Extra Missionem 3

Makiatto
Tsk, who would have expected someone so annoying to turn up on a simple protection mission?
Makiatto
He made such a big ruckus that the city sealed its gates, and as it turns out, it’s also time for Cherkasy’s scheduled artificial rain-seeding. Now we can’t even get to the emergency shelter.
Makiatto
In any case, just come in.
Commander
Alright.
(I do as Makiatto directs and enter an apartment.)
(She smoothly retrieves a towel from a cabinet and tosses it to me.)
Makiatto
Take this and wipe yourself down. Don’t go falling sick on me now, I don’t want to have to complete the commission on my own.
Makiatto
Tsk, looks like the bills haven’t been paid in a long time. Power doesn’t work and there’s no water either, so I guess a shower’s out of the question. Just find a place and sit down.
Commander
Is the sofa okay?
Makiatto
Please yourself.
(I find the sofa and sit down. I examine the apartment as I towel my hair dry.)
(It isn’t very big, but there are stuffed dolls everywhere and lots of pictures on the walls.)
(Makiatto is rummaging through the room for something.)
Commander
You seem to know this apartment very well.
Commander
Could it be that this place is your personal property, boss lady?
Makiatto
Yeah, I bought this apartment through a middleman.
Makiatto

Here, I’ve got some clothes for you. You’re soaked, so get changed… W-what’s with that look? It’s just a coincidence that I had a set in your size, just a coincidence, got that?!

Hm, the lights are no good, I guess we’ll have to make do with some candles…
(I examine the clothes she’s handed me. They’re exactly my size, and they’re made of high-quality materials that you’d have a hard time finding in a satellite city.)
Commander
You’re surprisingly well-off, Makiatto.
Makiatto
Hmph, before Springfield tricked me into working for her at Zucchero, I made a decent amount for myself working freelance commissions. The info brokers might have taken a big cut of it, but it was still enough for an apartment.
Makiatto
…Why are you looking at me like that? Don’t think that I’m a Doll who can’t survive on her own without Griffin and a certain dorky commander.
Commander
Hahaha, no, not at all. You’re so capable that I’m sure you could do well for yourself no matter where you went, Makiatto. At least, you’d do better than me.
Commander
So, is it okay if I change here?
Makiatto
Go ahead.
(Makiatto turns away and I take off my rain-soaked clothes.)
(The only sound in the quiet apartment is that of rustling fabric.)
Makiatto
Then… What about you? Now that you mention it, I don’t think I’ve asked about you yet.
Makiatto
How have you been these past few years?
Commander
I’ve been getting by. Things have been alright, more or less.
Makiatto
Getting by?
(I hear a “tap, tap, tap”. Makiatto’s finger is rhythmically tapping on the table, not too far away from me.)
Commander
I took a few jobs in the contamination zones. Enough to keep me from starving to death, at least.
Makiatto
So—you’re saying that you thought you were getting by so you didn’t even bother telling us anything and vanished into the contamination zones by yourself?
Commander
Well, I wouldn’t really call it vanishing… My circumstances were… complicated, and it’s not something that I could explain quickly.
Makiatto
So because you couldn’t explain them quickly, you chose not to explain them at all?
Makiatto
…I can’t believe I was so worried back then. If I hadn’t received news about that stupid agreement, I’d have thought you were off playing hero somewhere.
(I look up at Makiatto. Her face is turned away from me and I can’t make out her expression.)
Commander
Are you angry?
Makiatto
Angry? Why would I be angry?
Makiatto
It’s not like anyone would care whether I was angry or not, right? You just up and left without a word and now that we finally managed to meet again after so long, you still won’t explain why you did it…
(I stop halfway through putting on my shirt as an idea slowly forms in my mind.)
Commander
Wait… So you’re bothered by the fact that I didn’t contact you back then?
Makiatto
(Makiatto does not reply, but the tapping on the table assures me that she’s still listening.)
Commander
I’m sorry, Makiatto.
Commander
But… It’s true that a lot of things happened back then, and I couldn’t get in touch with you.
Makiatto
And?
Commander
And… I’m sorry, but I can’t talk about the rest.
Makiatto
(While Makiatto still does not reply, the tapping finally stops and I finish changing.)
(Shortly afterwards—)
Makiatto
Are you done changing yet?
Commander
Yes, I am.
(Makiatto turns around, frowning as she sits down beside me. A faint sweet scent coils around me.)
Makiatto
Forget it, it doesn’t matter if you don’t talk about it. Besides, I already knew something unusual had happened to you when I was notified of that “agreement”.
Makiatto

Normally, under URNC law, Dolls shouldn’t have the same rights as humans.

Yet, over the past few years, I could buy an apartment, Springfield could open a cafe, while Daiyan and the others could travel freely throughout the Green Zones. There must have been a price that was paid for that.
Makiatto
And the fact that we didn’t have to pay that price must have been because… So yes, we’re even. You don’t have to apologize.
Commander
Then… do you mean…?
Makiatto
I already said it’s okay, right? Don’t question it!
(Since I can’t figure out what Makiatto is thinking, I instead look up at the pictures on the walls.)
(Makiatto doesn’t say a word, her face red as she sits beside me. I examine each of the pictures, one after another.)
(Eventually, I realize that all these pictures seem to have something in common.)
Commander
…Well, why are all these pictures of the scenery? Did you not want to take pictures of people?
Makiatto
Ah! W-Where are you even looking?!
Makiatto
…A-Anyway, that’s,that’s because I’m always operating alone, so obviously I’d take pictures of landscapes. It’s not like I’d be able to take pictures of people, right?!
Commander
But surely there’d be passers-by from time to time, right?
Makiatto
Makiatto
Q-Quit asking all these nosy questions! You’re dried off now and you’ve changed your clothes, so hurry up and go to sleep on the couch! Otherwise you might get sleepy tomorrow and you won’t be able to run in time if there’s danger!
(I scratch my head. I have no idea why Makiatto is mad again.)
Commander
Well… It IS getting kind of late. Perhaps I should turn in?
Makiatto
Go to sleep!
(After that, Makiatto pulls out a blanket for me before blowing out the candles and returning to her room.)
(The apartment falls silent and I pull the blanket over me. As I contemplate the events in CHE-02 over the past few days, my eyes begin to grow heavy…)
(Shortly afterwards…)
(Still half-asleep, I hear the sound of footsteps approaching me and I’m immediately wide awake.)
(The air is filled with a faint sweet fragrance. After I confirm that the person approaching me is Makiatto, I relax.)
(What is she trying to do?)
(Just as I’m about to open my eyes, I feel something soft on my face. Is she… poking me?)
You dork, why are you sleeping so heavily… What are you going to do if you run into trouble in a contamination zone…
(The night wind blows into the room through the window, carrying Makiatto’s sweet scent to my nose.)
(Shortly afterwards, I hear Makiatto muttering to herself.)

…You know, I was so mad when I found out you’d left Griffin just like that without saying a word and only leaving behind that stupid cold agreement thing!

I wanted to rush into the contamination zone right then and there and demand an explanation from you!
…But I guess if I’d done that, if I’d disregarded that agreement and went looking for you, you’d probably have been in danger.
After you left Griffin, I left Griffin too. I took on jobs by myself, and then I met Springfield…

Slowly, I realized that you must have had your reasons for not contacting me, otherwise I wouldn’t have learned about you in that way, so I decided not to make a fuss about it…

But you’re a big stupid jerk, you know that? At the very least, you could have given me an explanation after we met again!
(Makiatto’s voice trails off, leaving only the rustling of the wind in the room.)
Never mind. You’ve always been like this, after all…
After that… I went to a lot of places, and whenever the feeling struck me, I’d take a picture, which I’d bring back and frame up. Over time, my wall was filled up.

And whenever I felt like taking them down, for some reason I couldn’t bring myself to do it…

I don’t know why I felt that way, just like I don’t know why I had to buy this apartment back then.
Sometimes, I’d think about how you might need a place to crash if you ever returned to the Green Zone, and at that time, we could take a picture together, in front of this wall…
But in the end, I couldn’t take your picture…
Still… what we have now is fine.
(I hear her getting up. The wind is still rustling gently.)
Goodnight, jerkmander.

Straightforward Honesty

Private Meeting Logs

Makiatto

Say, Commander... Do you have any preferences in terms of furniture?

I'm not trying to insinuate anything! That apartment I bought before has some furniture in it, though I did pick it myself back then.

The Elmo is due for some new furniture, too. M-maybe you could pick some out with me?

Hmph, no taking it back once you've agreed. I'll come find you when the time comes!

Guide To Furniture Selection I

Makiatto

Oh, you’re here… Hurry and come help me pick these out, t-then!

Don’t get the wrong idea, I don’t mind that much, I just think that–

The MCV is so big, yet the furniture inside is so raggedy. I don’t know how Mayling and Helena can get by in a place like this… a-and you too, I don’t understand…
Commander
Looks like I’ve made you worry. Sorry, Makiatto.
Makiatto
Huh? I-I wasn’t worried about you at all! I was concerned about Mayling and Helena, that’s all!
Commander
Yeah, yeah, I know. I’m still pretty sturdy, so I don’t need to be tended to.
Makiatto
Hmph… Enough babbling, come look at this.
(Makiatto shows me a shopping list on a tablet. Among the items are countless chairs of various makes and designs, enough to make me gasp with surprise.)
Makiatto
What’re you so surprised for… They’re just chairs, what’s so weird about them?
Commander
There’s more variety than I could have ever imagined… You really have picked out a lot.
Makiatto

O-of course! What gets used the most on the Elmo every day are the chairs, after all. I’m talking about when you get back from combat and still have documents to deal with…

W-well it’s not just you! Everyone needs to sit when they’re tired!

Anyway, stop putting it off and pick one you like!

I-I’ve made sure all of these chairs will fit you well by simulating your proportions! You could even close your eyes and pick one at random!
Commander
You’ve been really thorough, Makiatto. Shall I just pick a random one, then?
(I close my eyes, reaching out with a finger. Makiatto immediately grabs my hand.)
Makiatto
A-are you an idiot? You’d close your eyes just because I said so? What if you ended up with something you didn’t like?
Commander
I trust you, Makiatto. Since you went through so much effort to create such a selection for me, I would trust that every single chair here will be comfortable.
Makiatto
You… Seriously… Only an idiot trusts people unconditionally like this…
Commander

Alright, I’ll be an idiot, then. One that trusts Makiatto with all my heart.

I know Makiatto will take care of me, so I can close my eyes all I want. No, even if she lies to me… I don’t mind.

Because I’m still holding her hand tight, right?
Makiatto
...S-shut up already! Idiot! It’s just a chair, saying all of this… goodness! Makes me queasy! Just pick one already!
(She grows more and more anxious. I open my eyes to see her bright red face.)
Commander
Alright, alright, I’ll get on with it. You’ll have to give me your thoughts on it as well, though.
Makiatto
I-I got it! I will, alright? Stop staring at me like that!

Guide To Furniture Selection II

Commander
Did you bring me here to pick out our kitchen utensils next?
Makiatto

Mm… I suppose, I just think that… these things are important if we’re to live together.

Dolls don’t care for what food there is and the same goes for the tools used to make it. It’s a real concern for humans, though.

L-like… how it’s better to use an iron pan for frying things to add some micronutrients…

N-not like I’ve ever going to cook for you! I didn’t go out of my way to learn about this either! I just happened to come across it in a few articles while I was picking out furniture!
Commander
Right, you’re more used to making sweets and drinks than household dishes, Makiatto.
Makiatto

Hmph, looks like you’ve got some sense… but it’s not like I can’t do it at all! I-I could make an attempt occasionally, I suppose.

I have to say–it’s not good to take in too much sugar from sweets, either. I don’t have to worry myself, but you… it’s best for humans to watch their sugar intake.
Commander
It’s fine, sweets can help with a bad mood. Sacrificing a little bit of personal health is worth it sometimes.
Makiatto
I-idiot… you don’t take care of yourself at all…
Commander
With you taking care of me, it’s alright for me to be a little lax, right?
Makiatto
Shut up! W-who wants to take care of you? I-I don’t care about whatever you’re going to do yourself… Just have a look at this selection first!
(She shows me another carefully curated list of kitchen utensils.)
Makiatto
Here, this one’s for frying, this one’s for boiling… and this one’s multi-purpose heating… Which one do you think is best? Or should we get all of them?
Commander
You’re really thinking about getting into the kitchen to do the day-to-day cooking? Any particular reason? I thought you weren’t so interested in these things, Makiatto.
Makiatto
Tch… Only coffee and sweets for me? Since–
(Makiatto’s voice grows almost imperceptible. She shifts her body, turning away from me and avoiding my eyes.)
Makiatto

In… in a normal family… The w-wife makes that kind of food for the husband, right?

I-I want you to have that too… Three meals a day of home cooking…
Commander
Oh…
Makiatto

What do you mean “oh”? Do you understand what I’m saying or not, you moron?

I-I’ll cook for you, understand? Not sweets or afternoon tea, t-the kind of cooking everyone has at home!

So come pick these utensils out, quickly! I-I’m going to put the order in!
(Makiatto raises the tablet and hides her face with it. Off to the side, I see Makiatto’s ear burning thoroughly red.)
Commander
Of course I understand. I’ll be looking forward to your “home cooking”, Makiatto.

Guide To Furniture Selection III

Makiatto
Hey, stop lounging around, Commander. Look at this selection of wares I’m going to buy for the deck.
Commander
Oh, sorry, every time I come around here I want to just lie down for the rest of the day…
Makiatto
Hmph… I knew you’d be like this, so I went and put everything that we need on this list. You don't need to pick anything, just have a look over.
(She stuffs the list into my hand. I begin to peruse it in detail as she watches.)
Commander
Sofas for the balcony, recliners, cushions, umbrellas… Uh, I’m not sure I understand what these are–
Makiatto

I know what you're going to ask. We have all of these things on the deck already, but it’s easy for them to get wet or dirty. With only one set, we don’t have a replacement for when we need to clean it.

As for the umbrella, plain white is too boring. I picked out a few different patterns to switch up the mood even when you're just lying down underneath.
Commander
I see now. I didn’t think you would be so thorough, Makiatto.
Makiatto
Naturally. It’s not like I’m doing this for you! It’s so that everyone can be in a good mood when they’re on the deck!
Commander

I know. Thank you for thinking about everyone, Makiatto.

I do have a question, though. Why are there several sets of swimwear tacked onto the end?
Makiatto
Ah! T-those are different–Y-You’re supposed to pick between them!
Commander
Oh? You mean to say… You’re buying these for yourself?
Makiatto

What do you think? Of course it’s for me, that’s why I wanted your opinion… Why would I ask you to pick a swimsuit for someone else?

Just pick one, jeez! Which one out of those do you like the most? …Maybe something a little more sexy, or…

I’d only ever be wearing it f-for you, anyway…
(She turns her head to the side. Her hands remain placed on my chest, but the tips of her ears redden a little.)
Commander
Yes, right away. Do you have any personal preferences among these, Makiatto? I’d like to hear your thoughts too.
Makiatto
W-why ask me again… I like all of those…
Commander
Really? Let’s just buy all of them, then. I’d like to see you in a few different styles, after all.
Makiatto
Huh? What a waste that would be! I–
(As she continued to refuse my proposal, I grab her hand, guiding her soft fingers–Ticking the boxes next to each and every swimsuit and tapping “order”.)
Commander
That should do it. You won't do anything like cancelling the order behind my back, right?
Makiatto
Idiot, what are you saying… W-who would do that?
Commander

That’s settled, then. I’ll be looking forward to you in a swimsuit.

As for now–Why not come lie down with me here? The skies and clouds usually help me ease up.
Makiatto
If you say so… T-then I suppose I’ll be with you for a little. Just a little!

Guide To Furniture Selection IV

Commander
Finally for bedding and related items… Hm? No list this time?
Makiatto

No. I’ve already purchased the wares. They’re right here before you on this bedframe. Go ahead and lie down.

D-don’t go getting the wrong idea! I bought these ahead of time because I think sleep’s important!

How the mattress feels, whether or not the sheets and covers are soft, whether or not the pillow’s firmness and size are appropriate… These things are hard to approximate simply by looking at the metrics, right? So, I simply bought them.
Commander
I’ll help myself, then. Thank you for your efforts.
(I let myself fall backwards. My body sinks into a warm pile of velvet and felt, akin to a cloud.)
Commander
Mm…
Makiatto
How is it? Should do for sleeping in, right?
Commander
It’s pretty comfy. Why don’t you try it yourself, Makiatto?
Makiatto
Me? I tried it earlier, I’ll be alright. Besides, it’s the middle of the day, lying down here with you…
Commander
So what? Being alone in bed isn't the same as having a companion. Come on.
(I take Makiatto’s hand, lightly pulling her towards the bed.)
Makiatto
I can move myself, don’t drag me, I… Woah!

(She tries to shuffle forward as I pull on her hand, tripping on my feet hanging off the bed. She loses her footing, tumbling towards the bed headfirst–)

(Well, straight into my lap to be exact. A faint aroma with a hint of coffee fills my nostrils immediately.)
Makiatto
Mmh…
Commander
Oh, sorry! Are you alright?
(I attempt to get up as Makiatto’s weight presses down on me, but the soft mattress and lack of distance between us is stopping me from getting any leverage. After several attempts, Makiatto’s body ended up even closer to mine.)
Makiatto
I-I’m fine, but you–stop moving so much! You idiot!!
Commander
Ok, I’ll stop.
(I stop struggling. Makiatto supports herself, her arms on either side of my head, quietly creating distance between us. She does not fully stand up, lying down by my side again after lingering in the air for a little.)
Makiatto
Hm… Lying down like this, it’s… not too shabby. Not that I’m saying I’d like to lie down next to you! I’m just seeing if what we bought is comfortable or not!
Commander
Haha, I know. You’ve done a good job picking these out.
Makiatto
W-what?
Commander
The bedding is very comfortable, the blanket is soft, and the pillow height and bed size are just perfect–ideal for a person or two.
Makiatto
Hmph… A-at least you have the judgement to see that… It took me quite a while to pick these out in-store, b-but it’s no big deal…
Commander
Yeah, I understand. You put in all this effort so that I could rest well, Makiatto. Now, it’s time for you to have a good rest.
(Resting upon a cottony cloud, I grab Makiatto’s hand again. I turn towards her, inching closer to her pinkish-red face–)
Commander
You’ll rest here with me, right?
Makiatto
Ah, mh…!

Tea Time

About Preferences

Commander
You seem to have a sweet tooth, Makiatto.
Makiatto
Oh, it's true that I enjoy sweets. I feel relaxed when I eat sweet things, and...
Commander
And...?
Makiatto
Well...Sweets usually have cute designs...or whatever.

About Work

Commander
Do you enjoy your work, Makiatto?
Makiatto

Are you referring to...my work as an assassin?

I don't like it, but I don't dislike it either. It's just a means of making money to provide more options in the future.

If I had the luxury to choose, I would be more inclined to work for you instead...because I think working for you is more meaningful, that's all! It's not because I want to stay by your side or anything, okay?

About Interpersonal Relationships

Commander
I feel like you've changed quite a bit from before. It feels like you're more...mellow, nowadays?
Makiatto

I don't have to always be a hedgehog, do I?

And it's true that I've met some decent companions, like Springfield, Centaureissi, Sharkry...They are decent, more or less.

B-by the way! Don't tell them what I just said to you!

About Movies

Commander
I've been hearing good things about the newly released movies. Wanna watch some together?
Makiatto
Watch movies together? Not a bad idea...Ahem, I mean, so what are we going to watch?
Commander
I'll leave the choice to you.
Makiatto
Oh. Oh...Let's see...This one, then...I want to watch...a romance film with you.

About Rest Days

Commander
What would you like to do if you were on a holiday, Makiatto?
Makiatto
Hmm...If I was alone, I'd probably take a walk somewhere, then have some coffee and snacks at a quiet cafe.
Commander
What if I was with you?
Makiatto
If I was with you...Wha...Wait a minute! What are you asking all of a sudden?! But if I was with you...If I...Ugh. No, I have to come up with a proper plan...

About Animals

Commander
Makiatto, do you like animals?
Makiatto

Animals? I would say so...As long as they are of the fluffy type.

But I'm not so good with large dogs. The kind that could just pounce on your and knock you over...I'm okay with the calmer types.

I can't deal with birds either. I was once on a mission where they kept pecking me...I'm telling you all this in private, got it? Don't tell anyone else...
