Weapon Background

The Heckler & Koch Mark 23 (also called MK23, MK 23 MOD 0, US SOCOM MARK 23) is a semi-automatic large-frame pistol chambered in .45 ACP. It was made under the request of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) as an "Offensive Handgun Weapon System" (OHWS): a handgun with match grade accuracy that is capable of being used as a primary weapon under charsh conditions by special forces operators.

Heckler & Koch began developing the MK23 in 1991 and was adopted by USSOCOM and the US Navy in 1996, beating its rival the Colt OHWS. Delivery of the pistols began in May of 1996 to US Navy SEALs and other special operations forces.

The MK23 underwent three test iterations before it was adopted. Phase I had a bulky Laser Aiming Module (LAM) and a shrouded suppressor, as well as a slide locking mechanism. Phase II had a slimmer LAM and non shrouded suppressor, removed the slide lock, and beveled the magazine well. The Phase III or Mod 0 model removed the front slide serrations, attached a Knights Armament Company (KAC) suppressor, and a LAM made by Insight Technology.

A civilian version of the MK23 was later sold by Heckler & Koch, named the Mark 23.[1]

Trivia

  • While SOCOM operators appreciated the MK23 for its ruggedness and reliabilty, most considered it too large and heavy, as it has almost the same dimensions as the Magnum Research Desert Eagle. The MK23 was mostly replaced by the SIG SAUER P226 and other 9mm handguns, though it still remains in the SEALS armory.
  • MK23 uses the prototype Phase II MK23 with front slide serrations in almost all of her artwork, which wasn't actually used by USSOCOM. Her "Impish Sweetheart" artwork corrects this by giving her the proper Phase III Mod 0 model with no front serrations.
  • The GFL community nicknamed her Nyaa23, or Nyan23 (喵23.
  • The MK23 is the famous handgun of Solid Snake, the protagonist of the Metal Gear series of tactical stealth action games.
