Weapon Background
The Type 100 submachine gun (一〇〇式機関短銃 Hyaku-shiki kikan-tanjū) was a Japanese submachine gun used during World War II, and the only submachine gun produced by Japan in any quantity. It was made in two basic variants referred to by American and British observers as the Type 100/40 and the Type 100/44, the latter also known as the Type 100 (Simplified). A third variant was a folding version of the early model, sometimes referred to as the Type 100 Navy, made for parachutists.[1]
Before Type 100 issued for Imperial Japanese Army, its predecessor, known as Model II Type A, Variant 1 was manufactured by Kijiro Nambu in 1934. The Model II Type A utilize 50-rounds 8mm Nambu magazine and inserted in the pistol grip and a latch at the bottom of magazine was used to deploy on vehicle mount, while the Model II Type B uses fire selector and nicknamed by Allied Forces as 'Bullpup'. However both of them are rejected by the government due several malfunction although small quantities was used during Battle of Shanghai.
The further experiment of Japanese Machine Pistol was conducted where the Type III Model A was created and some features was brought from the predecessor Type I, and being accepted by the government. In this case, the Type III Model B was re-designated by the government as Type 100.
