Weapon Background[edit]

The USAS-12 (Universal Sporting Automatic Shotgun, 12-gauge) is an automatic shotgun manufactured in South Korea by Daewoo Precision Industries.[1]

The design history of the USAS-12 dates back to the late 1980s, when American arms company Gilbert Equipment Co. began work on a select-fire shotgun broadly based on principles employed in earlier Atchisson shotguns like the AA-12. The design of the new weapon was produced by John Trevor, Jr., who presented it to Gilbert Equipment in 1989. However, since Gilbert Equipment Co. had no internal manufacturing capabilities, it needed to look elsewhere for possible production partners. Only one firearms manufacturer ended up agreeing to produce the weapon: the South Korean company Daewoo Precision Industries. Daewoo engineers adapted the design of the new weapon to better fit their manufacturing techniques, and mass production of the USAS-12 commenced in the early 1990s. The USAS-12 sold well to military and security forces of several countries in Asia, and more than 30,000 USAS-12 shotguns had been produced by the mid-1990s.

The USAS-12 is a gas-operated, select-fire weapon designed to provide sustained firepower in close-combat scenarios. It accepts detachable 10-round box magazines or 20-round drum magazines. Both types of magazine are made of polymer, and drum magazines have their rear side made from translucent polymer for quick determination of the number of shot shells left. The bolt locks with a single large cylindrical locking piece that moves up into a round hole in the barrel extension.

At roughly the same time that Daewoo was ramping up production over in South Korea, Gilbert Equipment Co. was trying to bring a semi-automatic version of the USAS-12 to the U.S. civilian market. Unfortunately, U.S. Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen declared the firearm as "having no sporting purpose", and so the weapon became listed as a "destructive device" under the U.S. National Firearms Act of 1934. This greatly restricted the weapon's ability to be sold domestically. During the late 1990s, RAMO Defence Co. began to assemble USAS-12 shotguns from a combination of Korean and U.S.-made parts, in hopes of circumventing the restrictions on importing weapons. Once again, however, the U.S. civilian market would be denied access to the platform, as RAMO Defense limited sales of their USAS-12s to government agencies only.

Character Design

USAS-12's design bears a strong resemblance to a previous "magical girl" design created by her artist and posted on Pixiv just before her introduction on the Chinese servers.[2]

Character Background

Official character description: Letting show some childlike pride, and said to have received "high-level training", she has lots of theoretical knowledge and takes a careful "academic" approach to things, but in fact lacks a lot of basic common sense. She has strong admiration for SG Saiga-12Saiga-12Saiga-12, who in her view understands how to enjoy life, and has taken a liking to the instant noodles recommended by her.

Trivia

  • In 2007, Ameetec Arms LLC of Scottsdale, Arizona, started manufacturing semi-automatic clones of the USAS-12. These clones, called the WM-12, mainly differed from the USAS-12 in that they lacked the original's fixed sights and carrying handle, which were replaced by a Picatinny rail. The manufacturer stated that the WM-12 was not a "destructive device", and would thus readily available to civilians. As of January 2008, however, the WM-12 was no longer to be found on Ameetec Arms' online catalogs, having been discontinued after its pre-production run. Only a few WM-12s were built using USAS-12 demilitarized shotguns.
  • The VRAIN Power Skin is named as such likely due to the similarities in color scheme with an idol character in the 'Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS' anime series named 'Blue Angel'.
