The P290 is chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum (9mm Luger, 9mm NATO). The slide is stainless steel treated with Nitron, making it appear black. The main difference between the two versions is that the P290RS model features a redesigned DAO trigger. This new trigger featured something called "Restrike Capability", whereby a shooter could simply pull the trigger a second time in the case of a misfire. Prior to this redesign, a misfire required that the shooter retract the slide to reset the trigger disconnector in order to attempt to fire a cartridge that failed to ignite on the first attempt. Some other elements were redesigned as well, including the grip beavertail area, the addition of a finger support on the magazine baseplate, a reshaped magazine release, and a new slide hold-open lever. A .380 ACP caliber option was also made available for the P290RS.

The P290RS was replaced in the SIG catalogue by the P365.

Weapon Background

The Sig Sauer P290 is a polymer frame subcompact handgun chambered in 9x19mm produced by SIG Sauer USA of Exeter, New Hampshire.[1]

The P290 is not a modular design and comes in only one caliber and frame size, being specially designed as a concealed carry firearm. The slide rides on a set of stainless steel rails set into the polymer frame. The sights are full-size tritium-illuminated Siglight Night Sights, and feature two dots on the rear of the slide and one in the front. Sig Sauer handguns are combat sighted, meaning that the front sight post completely covers the bullseye of the target when aiming. The P290 trigger is a fairly standard double-action only (DAO) trigger which actuates a hammer to fire the cartridge. Units come from the factory with a holster, safety loop lock, and a set of magazines. The P290 comes standard with one six-round magazine and one eight-round magazine with an extended baseplate. The six-round magazine has a baseplate with a small finger rest, and also comes with a flush-fit baseplate without the finger rest. The grip module has interchangeable panels to change the appearance.

SIG Sauer produced the P290 from 2011 to 2017. The original P290 model was replaced in 2012 by an updated version known as the P290RS.
