{{Dialogue|(Morning, Yellow Zone, Elmo ops room.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(All the reports and files meant to be worked on today are now perfectly sorted on my table, each one clearly labelled with exceptionally perfect annotations and concise project summary.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(The only thing missing being—)|}}
{{Dialogue|...I don't remember having finished these.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Good morning, Commander. A new day has dawned... excellent. Looks like you've woken up extremely swiftly today, I'm glad to see you in good spirits.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Klukai, I suspect we've got a suspicious passenger aboard the Elmo.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I've already inspected Elmo's operational status; there are no anomalies, of course, including the crew.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|However, if that's the reason for your unusual alertness today, I don't mind going through the Elmo again.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Rest assured, Commander. With me present, no one will ever be allowed to harm you.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Seeing how seriously Klukai reacts to the "suspicious passenger", I feel like I've made a poorly thought-out joke.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Rather than harm... it feels like they're being philanthropic. All of my reports and files were compiled overnight.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...Commander, have you double-checked those documents?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|They were wonderfully done, so perfect in fact that I feel like I should just pay them well enough for them to remain here.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|You ought to feel pleased now, as they have already decided to remain.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Already?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...Really, how many more hints do I need to give you?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Given those sloppy reports and disorganized files of yours, only I could help you organize them all in one night.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Technically, it only took me 4 hours, which is roughly twice as fast than if you did it on your own.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Umm, thanks, Klukai. With your help, I can go straight to the dispatch room now.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|To arrange dispatches? I've drawn up a plan for today's dispatch assignments, it's been sent to your terminal.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(I skeptically pull out my terminal to check.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Did you do this data analysis overnight too?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|A trivial task that didn't take very long. Anyway, I've taken care of all work which needed doing. Commander, you can just relax for the rest of the day now.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|The appreciation can come later, what I'd like to remind you of is—|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|You have a lot of free time today, so if you happen to have something you wanted to do but can never find the time for, or...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Things you wanted to say but never found the opportunity to do so, today would be the proper time for closure.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Thanks, that was very helpful.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(After briefly thanking Klukai, I immediately start on checking the dispatch plan.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Commander|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(But Klukai doesn't appear to have any intention of leaving just yet}}
{{Dialogue|You seem to have more to say?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...No.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai looks a little displeased... Was my tone too informal?)|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I just tried to remind you, Commander. Don't you have something you want to say?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Today's not a busy day, you have ample time to think it through.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|...?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai intensifies her tone, her expression also grows more serious, fixing her eyes on me without looking away.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Looks like she won't settle for anything less than an answer today... But, what's with her?)|}}
{{Dialogue|Putting on a thoughtful demeanor right away, huh?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Commander, I've already assisted in completing all your work today. Please use the time saved to reflect on it and don't leave anything out.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(What am I supposed to ponder without a hint?)|}}
{{Dialogue|(But if Klukai started helping me today... I think I've figured it out...)|}}
{{Dialogue|I see.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Sorry, Klukai, for taking so long before talking to you.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Hmph...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Hearing that, Klukai's expression finally softens. She hums gently in satisfaction, signaling for me to continue.)|}}
{{Dialogue|It's about the fieldwork, isn't it?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Fieldwork?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Both Groza and Mayling are out on fieldworks lately and Groza especially informed me before leaving that you would take over her responsibilities during her absence. However, I assume you aren't well-versed in the Elmo's matters, right? Shall I give you a short briefing?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|N-no?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(A tinge of hesitation clouds Klukai's expression, as if she's withholding her feelings. The ops room thus falls into a brief, awkward silence.)|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(At last, the enigmatic ripples return to tranquility.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...No, that's right.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|But rest assured, Commander. I am an elite Doll, the leader of H.I.D.E. 404 and will soon be in charge of all the matters of the Elmo... which includes the Commander's schedule, the entire schedule.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Hearing Klukai's acknowledgement, I also experience a sense of relief.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Well, looks like I can entrust you with the Elmo for the time being.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Only now do you realize that? Besides, that suffix condition was redundant.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Anyway, I've enabled all access for you. Whether it's my work or the schedule, you can check in anytime and follow up.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I saw that.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|However, Commander, you're still the one in charge of the Elmo. I'll be confirming all schedules and tasks with you.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|In addition... I'd like to remind the Commander that giving someone this much access is a bit reckless. Please be more conscientious about it, unless...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|...You entrusted them to me, this is the most sensible decision you could take.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Then, I'm counting on you.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Rest assured, Commander. You will not be disappointed.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Whether it's your work or daily life, I'll get everything organized, just you watch.|Klukai}}}}

{{Dialogue|(Morning, Yellow zone, outside the Elmo.)|}}
{{Dialogue|I've been waiting for a while, Commander.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(As I exit the Elmo, I see Klukai waiting for me on her motorbike. She tucks her terminal back in her pocket and I can't help but ponder how many times she has double-checked it while waiting.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Sorry for being late, I was under the impression that today was a day off. Is there more work to do?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Commander... Have you properly checked today's schedule?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I promised to assist you in organizing all your work and daily life. You haven't forgotten about that, have you?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Since it's a rest day, I honestly didn't pay attention...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(l pull up my calendar and start checking the day's schedule.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(It's packed... so packed in fact that I'm under the illusion that I've become a resident of a safe zone.)|}}
{{Dialogue|As expected, took you long enough... Let me just explain.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Since the Elmo just so happens to be stationed near a Green Zone, I've planned you a vacation in the satellite city. A decent change of scenery once in a while, don't you think?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|As this is a time for relaxation, you don't need to be so on edge, Klukai.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Let's enjoy the time together, shall we?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...You're right.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(l scroll through the vacation itinerary Klukai created.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(First, ride Klukai's motorbike to the Green Zone, arriving just in time for a proper lunch at a pre-booked restaurant.)|}}
{{Dialogue|I've heard of this restaurant. Must've been hard to get a reservation, right?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Luckily, booking a table there is a breeze for 404 if we desire.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|After the meal is... a cafe? We have Springfield's coffee onboard the Elmo, is it really necessary?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|It is.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|...l mean, the cats in this cafe can help you relax.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|And lastly, head to this powersports show to research the latest models of motorbikes...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|We can check out many of the latest models. Is the Commander interested?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|...Isn't it a little late to ask me if I'm interested?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(Though, compared to her constant facade of a mature leader in everything, I find Klukai's overdue candid sharing of her interests much more comforting.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...Then suppose it's to keep me company.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Time is ticking, Commander. It's time for us to move out.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|No need to contemplate anything. Just follow me and relax.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Remember this day well... our first date since our reunion.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I will make the Commander experience the most unforgettable vacation ever.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai hands me the helmet she prepared, hops on the motorbike, and gestures for me to sit in the back seat.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Without much hesitation, I follow Klukai onto the bike.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Commander, hold me tight or you'll fall off.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(I slide my hand around Klukai's waist.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...A little tighter.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai leans down, starts off. With the roar of the engine, the motorbike shoots out like a bullet.)|}}
{{Dialogue|I never realized you acquired such a hobby.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Surprised? There was a time when 404 was left with just me and Mechty. It was easier to get around this way and I became used to it.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Besides... racing freely on the road like this, all the responsibilities and worries seem to be left behind for awhile. What do you think, Commander?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|It's pretty nice.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(While I try to take in the landscape of the Yellow Zone, today's visibility is so low that I can't even see the road ahead.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(At the same time, a powerful sandstorm, often recognized as the herald of a Collapse storm, relentlessly rushes by, its roar echoing behind my ears. I can't help feeling a sense of unease.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...But I'm afraid our joyride will have to come to an end.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|You don't like this, Commander?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I do, but the impending Collapse storm doesn't.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(l point to the darkening sky with gathering clouds in the distance. No doubt, a storm is brewing.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...Of all times, it had to be now.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Relax, we're not out of luck. There's a ruin nearby we can use for temporary shelter.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I've sent you the coordinates. Let's go there.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Okay... hold on to me, it's going to be rough.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Afternoon, Yellow Zone, coordinates SP734QE-H89YU1, unknown factory ruin.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Boof!)|}} | |||
{{Dialogue|(Another rock is mercilessly kicked into the wind—Klukai has almost "cleaned up" the ruin's entrance.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Klukai, come take a break and sit down for a bit instead of just standing there and moping. Collapse storms are a common occurrence in contamination zones, you'll get used to it.}}
{{Dialogue|(While clearly still upset, Klukai nonetheless walks back and takes a seat beside me.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...The weather forecasts have become as reliable as the words of a certain commander. Instead of putting my faith in this kind of stuff, I might as well go ahead and flip a coin to decide our next step.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|You're being a little dramatic, aren't you?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Thanks to this damn weather, all our plans for the day have fallen through.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|On the bright side, I will remember this day fondly, just like you hoped.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Remembered as the worst dating experience ever?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Isn't that the worst possible outcome? ...In this case, I might as well erase this memory as quickly as possible.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|It's not like that...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(At this point, I'm afraid there's nothing I can say to soothe the frustration of this elite Doll.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Commander.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(After a brief silence, Klukai is the first to speak.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Won't you... say something, Commander?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I'm used to the weather here. Collapse storms impact everyone who moves through the contamination zones equally.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...l mean, we've got a lot of free time right now, don't you have anything that you'd like to tell me?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Tell her something? Klukai seems to be asking this question a lot lately, under different contexts too...)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Is she hoping that I can exhibit better decision-making skills? Indeed, most of our time together was spent on handling missions, it's only natural she's concerned with that.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(But it's a rest day today... Even with the plans disrupted by the Collapse storm, I still want everyone to be a bit more relaxed.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Hmm, this storm is probably going to last a couple more hours. We're not making it to the satellite city at this rate. How about we figure out what we should do after the storm is over instead?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(For whatever reason, Klukai reveals an expression alien to her usual self. It's obvious to all that she's deeply unhappy.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(But in the end, she doesn't say anything.)|}}}}

{{Dialogue|(Evening, Yellow Zone, Elmo public area bar.)|}}
{{Dialogue|I couldn't find you anywhere. Turns out you're holed up here drinking.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|It's the new wine Mayling brought back.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Hmph... The Commander is still quite the popular one, not unlike back at Griffin.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Ugh, so, why're you looking for me? I believe all my tasks today should be done....|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai's stern expression makes me want to pull out my terminal and check if live missed a certain arrangement.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Looks like I need to remind you that... since Mayling and Groza are back from the fieldwork, I won't be in charge of assisting you from tomorrow onwards.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|...In other words, the reason I'm standing here isn't work.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Seems you can now take a breather.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(l glance at the liquor cabinet behind, select a couple flavors of juices from what's left, pour them into a shaker along with tonic water, add some salt and ice, then shake it even and finally pour it into a glass set in front of Klukai.)|}}
{{Dialogue|A non-alcoholic drink specially made for you, might be a little skimpy, but it's the best we can get here.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...Thank you, Commander.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I should be the one thanking you. It's been tough on you these days.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(l raise my glass and gently clink Klukai's. However, she only stares at me ponderously without raising her glass. This leads me to set my glass down awkwardly as well.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Is that all?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Commander, don't you have anything else to say?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I should?|}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai isn't the type who remains silent when they have something to say. What else could prompt her to enquire persistently...)|}}
{{Dialogue|(l ponder for a moment, then comes up with an answer.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Commander?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I see.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Klukai, you're suggesting that the Elmo and H.I.D.E. 404 are now part of a cooperative partnership, not superiors and subordinates.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...And then?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|So, supporting the Elmo and aiding me in my work these days were not part of your duties.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...I'm such a fool for expecting anything from you.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Maybe due to my inability to come up with a clear resolution, Klukai's eyes immediately dull. She lets out a soft sigh, then playfully mocks herself, as if having an internal monologue.)|}}
{{Dialogue|No need for you to worry about that, I'll make sure to compensate you accordingly.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Not only that, but since you've over-delivered on your duties, this payment will be nothing less than a fortune.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Rather than the delighted face I was looking forward to seeing from Klukai, I'm faced with one that's seldom seen; one encompassing repressed frustration and bitterness.)|}}
{{Dialogue|YOU REALLY DON'T HAVE A CLUE!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Right now, even her voice is a few decibels above her usual.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(She gulps down the drink, then slams the glass onto the tabletop.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Klukai?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(Before I can even ask, she yanks me closer by the collar of my shirt.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Since you keep playing dumb, Commander, don't blame me for being discourteous.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Perhaps fueled by rage, Klukai's face suspiciously turns red.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Although the beverage was undoubtedly non-alcoholic, a tinge of sweet and sour, the telltale odor of alcohol, still lingers in the air.)|}}
{{Dialogue|When have you ever been courteous...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Uhm, I mean, the kind of shrewdness that can be perceived at a glance is the most dangerous... Right, Klukai?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(While doing my best to verbally appease Klukai, I attempt to find a way for her to let go of her grip without angering her further.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Even at this point, are you still avoiding me, Commander?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Do you think... I'd allow that to happen?!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Her grip has become tighter! Almost twisting my collar 180 degrees!)|}}
{{Dialogue|Are you really not going to explain yourself, Commander?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|After all these years, you couldn't possibly have never received any of my messages, could you? I've tried to reach out to you so many times, why won't you answer me in any capacity?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(So, it was about that...)|}}
{{Dialogue|Klukai, listen to me. I can explain... L-let go of me first.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I... No!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|You didn't even bother to answer me once, not a single message! Why should I listen to you?!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(She pulls me a little closer again!)|}}
{{Dialogue|(The distance between Klukai and myself shortens again, until a distance where even breathing felt intrusive.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...Commander, why don't you say something?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Are you still playing dumb, even now? I'm right in front of you, asking you all these questions and you still won't answer a single word?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|...What about "all I need is you"? Was that merely a ruse to fool me like a child all along?!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai is clearly in a terrible mood. With the way things are going, the reply needs to be weighed carefully so as not to anger her further.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(While I was thinking of a response, Klukai keeps voicing her grievances continuously.)|}}
{{Dialogue|It has been so hard to finally find you, I thought you finally needed me again.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|But how did it turn out...?! On the E-Elmo... with ALL these Dolls already?! ITS-SO-LIVELY-HERE!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|S-so you've just been recruiting new Dolls one after another, but never thought to bother with me?!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Not only that, but you also treated me like a complete outsider, going on and on about partnership and compensation and whatnot. When on earth did 404 ever charge you for anything?!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai's utterances grow more and more agitated, almost as if she's drunk.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Had I known that you didn't intend to leave alone at all and still needed Doll's assistance...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I would've... I would've shown up ages ago to get you.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|And what happened? Here I am, worried that the agreement and 404 would affect you negatively, like a total dork!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|That agreement can't do shit to me!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|And even now, you won't even give me an explanation—|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Hic....!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai's voice halts abruptly and her pupils cease to focus gradually.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...K-Klukai?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Hic—!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Even louder, now accompanied by a strong odor of alcohol.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(I quickly glance at the tabletop—the glass of non-alcoholic beverage that was supposedly consumed sits there full, making a mockery out of a certain someone's current embarrassing state.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(And my glass filled with vodka...)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Damn it, she downed it all!)|}}
{{Dialogue|*Alert. Detecting Level II intrusion of multiple Dolls.*|Alarm}}
{{Dialogue|(The warning rings up untimely, breaking the stalemate between me and Klukai.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Yet Klukai remains surprisingly calm.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Intrusion?! Multiple Dolls at that?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|*Identifying intruder... Confirmed... Tactical Doll, Klukai.*|Alarm}}
{{Dialogue|Klukai, are you accessing everyone's Level II?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Hehe... Today... lill show the Commander... w-whois the Elmo's true...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|*Please expedite response, several Dolls are facing forced shut down.*|Alarm}}
{{Dialogue|Klukai, what are you doing in Level II? Cut it out!|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(However, focused on Level II, Klukai ignores my pleas.)|}}
{{Dialogue|It's over! It's the end of the world—|Mechty}}

{{Dialogue|(—Five days ago)|}}
{{Dialogue|Klukai, today's combat report has yet—|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(Realizing I was calling out to her, Klukai immediately averts her eyes.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...The report is in the ops room.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Is it? Well, we can go together...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I'll leave now.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(—Three days ago)|}}
{{Dialogue|Klukai, there's combat training later today, do you...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...404's got our own group training, so I won't be here.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Huh? But Mechty's coming?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...l... I train by myself.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai interrupts my invitation with a stiff excuse and turns away just like that.)|}}
{{Dialogue|For the second time... Is she avoiding me?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(—Yesterday)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Ever since Klukai declined my invitation, I haven't seen her for the past two days.)|}}
{{Dialogue|She's totally hiding from me...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Since I can't find her, maybe I should send her a message?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(l open my comm terminal and type a message to Klukai.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Morning, Yellow Zone, Elmo ops room)|}}
{{Dialogue| *New message received*|System}}
{{Dialogue|(l open the comms interface, it's Klukai's reply.)|}}
{{Dialogue|On our day off at 10 in the morning, I'll meet you at Elmo's exit ramp.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|("Where are you?" —my message sent to her still hangs visibly above her reply, with date displayed as from a day earlier.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Anyway, it's a nice thing that she replied. After all, she's been avoiding me for a while now. I'm guessing it has something to do with that glass of vodka.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Hold on, today...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Today's the rest day?!|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(l glance at the clock, only ten minutes left before the promised meeting time.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Morning, Yellow zone, outside the Elmo.)|}}
{{Dialogue|I didn't expect the Commander to actually see the message.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|After all, it's quite difficult to see you nowadays and I still cherish that.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|If possible, please let me know further in advance next time, okay?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...Hmph, itis difficult to see me?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Nothing changed for me compared to usual. It's you who didn't look hard enough.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Fine, I'm sure you didn't deliberately avoid me. And definitely not while drunk...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Commander!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai interrupts.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...l have no idea where you're going with this, but I would advise against it, or else—|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Or else?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Or else, I will... not be too happy about it, which wouldn't spell good news for you.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Indeed, when you made a whole scene in Level II last time, you created the biggest breach of the Elmo in years.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|That was an accident!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|But, rather than mocking me with those words, let's get on the bike... Commander.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai seems unwilling to continue the conversation about the drunken episode and tosses me the same helmet I wore last time.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Am I riding in the back seat today as well?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I won't be able to steer very well if you sit in the front.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|...But I don't mind trying it if you insist.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Then forget it.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai gets on the motorbike, closely followed by myself.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Not bad. Looks like you've taken it upon yourself to hold on to me.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai appears somewhat content with the situation and just like that, she drives me around on the plains of the Yellow Zone for a while.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(After an unknown period, Klukai finally pulls over to the side of the road.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Get off.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Looks like today's date won't be in the Green Zone.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|That date was indeed a shame...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|However, I didn't say it's a date this time.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|That aside, since you were the one who messaged me first, you must have something to say this time, Commander.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Seems like whether or not if it's going to be a date depends on what I have to say.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|If that's how you interpret it, fine.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|That's awkward, Klukai. I don't want to give you the impression that I'm only saying this because I want to spend time in the Green Zone.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(A hint of anticipation appears on Klukai's face.)|}}
{{Dialogue|No, as long as the Commander refrains from avoiding the obvious this time...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Don't worry. Actually, I wasn't trying to avoid it. I just couldn't figure out how to say it.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Klukai, I'm well past being a Griffin commander. Yet even as a bounty hunter, the circumstances I find myself in aren't much better.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I've always known that.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|It's not just a question of the complex web of powers at play surrounding us, but I myself am subject to... many constraints and bindings, as you are aware.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|So, even though the agreement does not ostensibly affect 404, I've always thought that for you, who are in perils of your own, establishing contact with the Elmo before the agreement is relaxed... or before the constraints on the Elmo are gone, would bring about even greater risks to you.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I know you're not afraid of any of that, but...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Are you worried I'll get in trouble if I come too close to you?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|So to speak.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Commander, I've always respected your decisions. And live always convinced myself with the thought that if you're not ready yet, then I won't bother you...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Ever since I became the leader of 404, I've often had no choice but to make compromises and changes. Of course, it's all for the sake of making 404 stronger and protecting our members.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I understand that... in this world, being strong and powerful is what gives you the right to make decisions.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|But...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Klukai ponders for a moment and looks at me solemnly.)|}}
{{Dialogue|"Being safe" too, is something you can only feel assured of once it's firmly in your own hands.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I'm sure you understand that more than I do.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Since you get it, that makes everything easier.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|But it's no longer just that, Commander.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I will always stand by 404, but I'll never give up on you either, and much less accept the fact that you've been trying to estrange yourself from me for reasons like this...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|This is the path chosen by the new leader of 404 and the elite Doll Klukai.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Squad 404—those who don't exist—have fought tooth and nail in the past just to survive and we are more than capable of doing it again.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Besides, you're going to help me, right?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Wind ruffles Klukai's long hair. Behind her is the usual, dull brown sky of the Yellow Zone, with dark clouds capable of overwhelming everything.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Dust rises with the cold wind, as it has done before countless other Collapse storms, rendering everything in the distance growing blurry.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(But Klukai stands there, her silhouette unmistakably clear to me.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...Looks like Klukai is still the same old Klukai and I was the one that got too sentimental.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(Seemingly satisfied with this answer, Klukaiis face finally breaks into a smile.)|}}
{{Dialogue|So, what's next on the schedule?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Is that even a question? Of course we're going to make up for the date we weren't able to go on last time. You're not going to shut me down now, are you, Commander?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Of course not.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Well, that concludes the chit-chat. We'll have to savor the rest of our time. Get on the bike.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Riding Klukails motorbike now has become a breeze.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(With the roar of the engine, Klukai once again takes me on a ride.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(However...)|}}
{{Dialogue|Ugh, sure enough, that weather change was indeed a prelude to a Collapse storm.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...Again?!|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Behind us, signs of the Collapse storm resurface.)|}}
{{Dialogue|By the looks of things, we've got about five minutes before the storm reaches our current position. Should we find a place to take shelter? The nearest ruin we can hide in is only two kilometers away.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|It's just a storm after all...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(Before I can finish, Klukai throttles up and, with no intention of changing direction, steers the motorbike right along the heading of the Collapse storm.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...Just to be clear, it's not that I don't trust you with the performance of your motorbike, but... are you really trying to outrun a Collapse storm?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|You've caught on pretty quickly this time.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|No worries, I'm here to keep you safe. I promise... with all I've got.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|No matter what kind of obstacles lie ahead, I will overcome them to prove to you...|Klukai}}

{{Dialogue|Commander, have you noticed any changes in the ops room?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|There's a mechanical black cat... it's hard not to notice. Unfortunately it doesn't move and it's just going to sit there and be looked at.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I've installed a monitor and explosives on it. If it detects any intent from the Commander to leave silently on his own again, the device will automatically activate the explosive.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I'm happy you brought me a gift, but I'd still consider this a serious threat...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Commander, I originally thought that after we reunited and came to understand each other, the restlessness and obsession in my heart might lessen a bit.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|But in reality, it seems to be growing day by day in a bittersweet way...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Honestly, even though I understand your feelings and everything you've done, still...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|But if I can't be by your side all the time, I still often feel a sense of longing and unease. Commander, do you ever feel the same way?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Stop, you don't need to answer that, Commander. Anyway, that cat will be by your side when I can't. Just treat it well and sleep with it in your arms like any other cat.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|...So, is it really rigged with a monitor and explosives?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Will you leave me again if not?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Relax, there's nothing inside, it's just a little ornament I made by hand. If you like it... that would be perfect.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|That said, even if you really get some new ideas and won't tell me about them...|Klukai}}

{{Dialogue|Sorry to bother you, Commander, but are you free at the moment? I want to talk to you about the... mission that I mentioned earlier.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Sure, but why didn't you bring it up earlier? Is it some kind of secret mission?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...Right on the mark. It's about a secret mission entrusted to 404, so the less people know, the better.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|If that's the case, I'll go get Mechty and the others to gather... Uh, Klukai, I won't be able to move if you grab on to my clothes this tightly.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Well, there's no need to tell them about this. Let's keep this matter between us.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Because... we don't have a set plan yet. We should confirm and set some details in stone so that they aren't told things that may not be true later.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I see, as expected of you, Klukai. You're definitely showing the thoughtful meticulousness that befits your title as 4041s leader.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|So, what is this secret mission all about?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Ah, so... To start off, let me measure your ring size.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|My ring size? ...Hold on. Are you sure this is a normal mission? Why does it involve my fingers?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I don't know the specific reasons, but I can confirm that this is a crucial part of the mission.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Um... so, what is your opinion on this, Commander?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Since it's confirmed that my fingers have to be measured as part of the mission... I'm guessing that the end result is the creation of a throwing weapon that involves pulling a safety pin.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|To put it simply, it's probably something like a hand grenade... What do you think of my reasoning, Klukai? Wait. Your face is scrunching up, Klukai. Are you angry?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I'm not angry.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|But this is exactly what you look like when you're really angry.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|No. You're mistaken. I'm just discussing the details of a mission with you in a normal state.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|As for the weapon with a safety pin that you mentioned... My guess is the same as yours.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|The client probably wants to custom-order some kind of throwing weapon for you, but was worried that your finger might get stuck in the safety pin at an important moment. This might be why they asked me to measure your ring size beforehand.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I understand the logic... but why do I feel an intimidating aura from you... and that's quite the stern stare you're giving me, Klukai.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|It must be your imagination. Okay, give me your left hand. I'll measure it for you.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|(After some measuring...)|}}
{{Dialogue|Data collection complete. I see... Your fingers are much thicker than mine, Commander.|Klukai}}

{{Dialogue|No problem... Speaking of which, did we get any feedback from the client after you submitted the measurements?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|They didn't bring up that topic, so I'm in the dark as much as you are.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|What a pity. I was planning to ask what kind Of throwing weapon they were going to make. Guess my curiosity won't be sated after all.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...What's wrong, Klukai? Did I say something wrong?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...No. I was just thinking that a Commander should behave like one, so you should put your interest in the weapon aside and focus on the mission.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|...Yeah, you're right.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|We should prioritize the mission. Have a look at these pictures, Commander. Give me your honest opinion on them once you're done looking.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|These? These pictures seem to depict various types of rings... Klukai, are you sure this is normal?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|You seem to be misunderstanding something, Commander. These are all usual procedures that we go through during our missions.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|I wasn't showing you pictures of rings. Those are actually safety pins of different styles, all used on throwing weapons.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|...Isn't that weirder? Why are we spending time picking types of safety pins for the client?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I'm only interested in completing the mission, so I won't dig into such specific details.|Klukai}}

{{Dialogue|What do you like more, golden ri... ahem, golden safety pins, or silver safety pins?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Silver, I guess... It feels more low-profile.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I see. Do you wear jewelry on a regular basis?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|That would affect my work, so I usually don't...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...We won't be able to proceed if that's the case.|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|...But if someone really wants me to, I'll still wear them during downtime.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Outside of that, I'll only be able to use it as a subtle adornment. I'd attach a chain to it and wear it as a necklace.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|That's acceptable. I don't want it to end up as an unworn display piece after all that effort...|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|Huh? What did you say, Klukai?|Commander}}

{{Dialogue|You haven't given me much to work with... could you elaborate? For example, perhaps you could specify the person giving me the gift.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...Just pretend that she's the most important person in your life. She's going to express her feelings for you, which is the reason for this gift.|Klukai}}

{{Dialogue|Or are you afraid of receiving gifts because you feel that it would create a number of misunderstandings?|Klukai}}
{{Dialogue|That's not the case, it's just that I'm...|Commander}}

Record 1
This military Doll, formerly known by her personal codename "416", has absolute confidence in herself and aspires to make every member of H.I.D.E. 404 an elite. After the former leader Leva was seconded to the Non-Military Forces Administration along with Lenna, she took over as the leader, finished recruiting new members, and expanded 404 from a single squad to a covert organization with two excellent combat teams. Her neural cloud gradually matured during this process.
Klukai considers herself an elite Doll and sets her own standards appropriately. As such, both her strength and strictness are unquestionable. To those who know Klukai well, however, it's clear that underneath this cold, strong-willed facade lies a very simple wish—to keep everything safe.
Klukai firmly believes that only by becoming strong can one gain the ability to protect and the right to choose. Justifying the meaning of her name, Klukai hopes that she can become akin to a fierce crocodile, seizing a broader sky for 404 and giving "those who do not exist" the confidence to stand proud. However, all this gentleness and cherishing is buried under the strict requirements set by this unrestrained leader.
Times have changed, and so has her identity, but this has only strengthened the relationship between Klukai and the Commander. This also makes her believe that, when all is said and done, the only Doll who can stand by the Commander's side is her.
Record 2
No one knows when exactly, but one day Squad 404 began embarking on missions with just two members.
416 looked at the battlefield where victory was already certain and couldn't help but fall into contemplation. Although the mission was completed, this time it proved to be an arduous task due to insufficient firepower. She and Gr G11 would probably have to undergo maintenance.
"Leva and Lenna... when will their secondment be over... I really don't want you to forcefully wake me up every time you need a partner for a task..."
Gr G11's untimely complaint angered 416, especially considering the names she mentioned.
That's right. Ever since the day Kalina long-term seconded those two, all of 404's regular tasks turned into duo missions—just 416 and Gr G11.
"Looks like you'd prefer to get wrecked by that bullet storm and end up in an underground broker's scrap refitting station." 416 frowned, probably at the thought of the other two members of 404.
With just two members, Squad 404 was definitely incomplete.
How much longer would it be until those two return to 404? Will they ever come back at all?
An inexplicable irritation lingered in her heart, likely because she was subconsciously rejecting such an outcome.
"Well, it's probably simply because of the heavy damage we sustained just now."
Thinking this, 416 dragged Gr G11 along, throwing her into the transport vehicle for the return trip.
Record 3
"Ugh... you really bought it..."
Gr G11 let out a brief sigh at the sight of a brand-new motorbike parked in the base.
One of the transport vehicles commonly used by Squad 404 was destroyed during one of the recent missions. In order to arrive at the location of the next mission on time, they had to rent a motorbike from an underground broker. Perhaps the driving experience was too good, or perhaps riding a motorbike made the overly tense 416 feel a brief sense of freedom and release. Either way, 416 didn't hesitate to order a bike of her own even for a second.
Moreover, now that all missions were conducted by just two people, an overly bulky vehicle would simply be a hindrance.
However, Gr G11 seemed utterly uninterested in 416's newly ordered bike. She lazily yawned and was just about to go back to her beanbag.
"We have a mission coming up in two hours. Where do you think you're going?"
"Like you said, there's two hours left... I'm still a bit sleepy, so I'll just take a short..."
"Idiot, it's precisely because you're such a lazybones that executing missions is so troublesome."
416 grabbed Gr G11 just as she was about to leave, interrupting her mid-sentence, and pushed her onto the rear seat of the motorbike.
"Eh... isn't it because half of our combat power is put on a secondment..?"
"I specifically requested a safety harness for the rear seat. Keep complaining and I'll change the mudguard to a Gr G11 model..."
Seeing her sit down obediently, 416 stepped on the gas.
Since then, 416 seems to come to enjoy taking Gr G11 for a ride, though the latter wasn't always so willing to come along.
Record 4
416 didn't approve of the idea of expanding Squad 404 at first.
On the one hand, it was because the Dolls' resumes Leva handed her weren't really all that satisfactory to her. On the other hand, though—
True to the original meaning of Squad 404, what 416 and the others initially wanted to fight for was perhaps something ordinary Dolls had always possessed. A safe haven for illegal Dolls, something that just wasn't suitable for those ordinary Dolls.
It all began with 416 saving Gr G11 on impulse, completely changing the latter's life as a result. At that time, she realized that, even if it was well-intentioned, taking matters into one's own hands could still change a person's fate.
If Leva hadn't forcibly stuffed new Dolls into 404 under the pretext of completing missions, or if Gr G11—whose fate was changed—hadn't chimed in, 416 might not have accepted all this so quickly.
However, once a decision was made, 416 immediately regained her usual determination and pride.
Restoring the squad's missing combat power was of utmost priority. Even without Leva and Lenna, 404 must keep moving towards the future instead of disbanding. To achieve this goal, and to be responsible to the members who entrusted 404 with their fates, 416 decided to accept the mantle of leadership.
Hearing this news, though, Leva smiled and passed 416 the handover documents she had prepared in advance—an entire stack all at once. Only then did 416 realize that she had likely been tricked again.
"So you've been planning to dump this ungrateful job on me all along?!"
"You've made such a grand declaration. Time to deliver, new leader of Squad 404." Leva's wink was as sly as always.
Record 5
"...I have no intention of digging into your reasons for leaving Griffin, but when do you plan to discuss your current situation with me?"
Having typed this message into the communicator, Klukai hesitated for a second before sending it.
Over the years, she hadn't received a single reply from that person. Fortunately, 404's intelligence network allowed Klukai to receive occasional updates about their situation.
Knowing that the other party was safe and sound was enough for Klukai to be able to retain patience and composure.
Otherwise, neither the Boojums from the contamination zones, nor the "agreement" that was seemingly ineffective against 404 could've stopped her.
"..." Klukai looked at the chat window again. The only messages in it were hers.
The dates of messages sent spanned years. It would've been impossible for the other party to miss all of them.
Klukai knew full well about the trauma the sands of time caused that person. All of her old acquaintances were made helpless in the face of the shifting tides.
Sometimes, silence doesn't stem from disgust or estrangement.
Not being involved doesn't necessarily mean non-interference or harmlessness.
She herself is now the leader of Squad 404. That change in perspective also allowed her to see more secrets and crises.
It's just a pity that she still can't share her perspective with that person.
"Klukai... if you're not going to sleep... at least be quiet..." Mechty complained, half-asleep. Only then did Klukai realize that she had been tossing around everything in her reach while in her state of contemplation.
In the end, Klukai deleted the message she had just composed and quickly typed the same short question as always:
"Where are you?"
Only this time, she attached her geolocation data as well. This was undoubtedly a dangerous move for the covert 404, but Klukai had no doubts about the other party's credibility.
"I'm waiting for your response. Wherever you are, I'm right here."
"No matter what the agreement entails, I only care about your response."
That silent tacit understanding was always entangled in the airwaves.
Record 6
Although I've been familiar with Klukai's capabilities for a long time, I'm still amazed by her incredible focus and outstanding reflexes whenever I see her in the training ground.
Every shot during shooting practice inevitably hits the bullseye. She is miles ahead in the physical training as well, frequently beating the training records on the Elmo's system. Be it close combat or tactical drills, she's flawless in every single aspect.
"Commander, you were spectating my simulation training just now, right?"
As soon as the training ended, Klukai found me in the resting area.
"Your performance was perfect. You're going to increase the peer pressure this way."
"If the only thing increased is pressure, then they're only good for being left behind in tears."
"So, Miss Elite Doll, is there any reason you invited me to watch your training?"
In response to my question, Klukai sent me a special training plan.
"Ahem, well, I don't want to be dragged down by this bunch either, so... this plan can keep them from falling too far behind."
"I remember training has a limited effect on improving a Doll's abilities. Hardware is the main factor determining a Doll's upper power limit."
"I used to think so too, Commander." Klukai seemed to have anticipated my words. "But the truth is, a Doll with impeccable hardware can still fail if they lack experience."
This seemingly made Klukai recall something. Perhaps it was past experiences. She was so confident in her strength from the very beginning, but this had been the cause of some of her failures.
Now, however, it seems like she considers the problems more comprehensively instead of just blindly obsessing over pursuing victory.
"In any case, Commander, please give it a good thought."
Record 7
Another gift arrived in the ops room today.
Judging by the style, it should be yet another gift from a certain elite Doll who often goes out on missions.
After all, every time Klukai comes back after completing a mission, she brings me gifts of various sizes.
"Commander, you've already seen the items, right?" Klukai's call was perfectly timed.
It was hard to miss such a large supply crate in the ops room. Aside from various supplies, the crate also contained a set of motorbike gear just my size.
Let's pretend, just for a second, that it's normal to give supplies as gifts...
Though I often purchase clothes for Dolls, it's really rare for it to be the other way around.
"So, have you tried that gear on?"
"It's a perfect fit. How did you know my size?"
"It's but a simple matter for an Elite Doll. Anyway... I'm counting on you to go for a ride with me on your next day off. Don't worry, I'll have your bike ready."
So that was the reason for this gift.
"Considering how busy you are, I'll handle some of your work for you. If you have any sense... you would postpone some of the non-urgent matters."
Record 8
Although 404 have boarded the Elmo, they still maintain independent operation. In comparison to other Dolls, Klukai has always emphasized the cooperative nature of our relationship.
In my opinion, however, those are nothing more than insistent words. The missions of the Elmo and 404 have long since been intertwined, yet she still stubbornly carries out regular fee settlements with me.
Perhaps this is Klukai's way of maintaining her dignity.
I understand her self-esteem goes against her being treated as an accessory or a weakling, but that has never been the case anyway.
"Commander, this is 404's expense list for this quarter. Take a look. If there are no issues, I'll make the payment."
Each expense is carefully listed in the spreadsheet, ranging from costly items like frame maintenance and replacement to trivial things like individual members' broken cups.
"Klukai, there's actually no need to submit this. You've helped out with the Elmo's missions a lot... but you've never taken a single cent as compensation. It's already enough to cover all this."
"That's different. The ones I don't charge for are missions I assist you with on my own."
"How is that different? Since we're collaborating, both sides should clearly settle the accounts, right?"
There it is again, the Klukai's signature "you don't understand anything" look. Every time she looks at me like this, I can't help but start reflecting on myself.
"In your eyes... if I'm still Klukai, the leader of 404, then from your perspective, we are still in a cooperative relationship... As such, it's natural for 404 to pay its fees."
"Then in your eyes, am I not also your Command—" Ah, it seems that I finally understand a part of it.
"I don't want money, and you're not my Commander... I'm different from other Dolls... but as far as Dolls like me go, I am all you need."
Memories
Across the Storm 1
...I don't remember having finished these.

Good morning, Commander. A new day has dawned... excellent. Looks like you've woken up extremely swiftly today, I'm glad to see you in good spirits.
Klukai, I suspect we've got a suspicious passenger aboard the Elmo.

I've already inspected Elmo's operational status; there are no anomalies, of course, including the crew.

However, if that's the reason for your unusual alertness today, I don't mind going through the Elmo again.

Rest assured, Commander. With me present, no one will ever be allowed to harm you.
Rather than harm... it feels like they're being philanthropic. All of my reports and files were compiled overnight.

...Commander, have you double-checked those documents?
They were wonderfully done, so perfect in fact that I feel like I should just pay them well enough for them to remain here.

You ought to feel pleased now, as they have already decided to remain.
Already?

...Really, how many more hints do I need to give you?

Given those sloppy reports and disorganized files of yours, only I could help you organize them all in one night.

Technically, it only took me 4 hours, which is roughly twice as fast than if you did it on your own.
Umm, thanks, Klukai. With your help, I can go straight to the dispatch room now.

To arrange dispatches? I've drawn up a plan for today's dispatch assignments, it's been sent to your terminal.
Did you do this data analysis overnight too?

A trivial task that didn't take very long. Anyway, I've taken care of all work which needed doing. Commander, you can just relax for the rest of the day now.

The appreciation can come later, what I'd like to remind you of is—

You have a lot of free time today, so if you happen to have something you wanted to do but can never find the time for, or...

Things you wanted to say but never found the opportunity to do so, today would be the proper time for closure.
Thanks, that was very helpful.

...

Commander
You seem to have more to say?

...No.
(Klukai looks a little displeased... Was my tone too informal?)

I just tried to remind you, Commander. Don't you have something you want to say?

Today's not a busy day, you have ample time to think it through.
...?

Putting on a thoughtful demeanor right away, huh?

Commander, I've already assisted in completing all your work today. Please use the time saved to reflect on it and don't leave anything out.
I see.
Sorry, Klukai, for taking so long before talking to you.

Hmph...
It's about the fieldwork, isn't it?

Fieldwork?
Both Groza and Mayling are out on fieldworks lately and Groza especially informed me before leaving that you would take over her responsibilities during her absence. However, I assume you aren't well-versed in the Elmo's matters, right? Shall I give you a short briefing?

...
N-no?

(A tinge of hesitation clouds Klukai's expression, as if she's withholding her feelings. The ops room thus falls into a brief, awkward silence.)

...No, that's right.

But rest assured, Commander. I am an elite Doll, the leader of H.I.D.E. 404 and will soon be in charge of all the matters of the Elmo... which includes the Commander's schedule, the entire schedule.
Well, looks like I can entrust you with the Elmo for the time being.

Only now do you realize that? Besides, that suffix condition was redundant.
Anyway, I've enabled all access for you. Whether it's my work or the schedule, you can check in anytime and follow up.

I saw that.

However, Commander, you're still the one in charge of the Elmo. I'll be confirming all schedules and tasks with you.

In addition... I'd like to remind the Commander that giving someone this much access is a bit reckless. Please be more conscientious about it, unless...

...You entrusted them to me, this is the most sensible decision you could take.
Then, I'm counting on you.

Rest assured, Commander. You will not be disappointed.

Whether it's your work or daily life, I'll get everything organized, just you watch.
Across the Storm 2

I've been waiting for a while, Commander.
Sorry for being late, I was under the impression that today was a day off. Is there more work to do?

Commander... Have you properly checked today's schedule?

I promised to assist you in organizing all your work and daily life. You haven't forgotten about that, have you?
Since it's a rest day, I honestly didn't pay attention...

As expected, took you long enough... Let me just explain.

Since the Elmo just so happens to be stationed near a Green Zone, I've planned you a vacation in the satellite city. A decent change of scenery once in a while, don't you think?
As this is a time for relaxation, you don't need to be so on edge, Klukai.
Let's enjoy the time together, shall we?

...You're right.
I've heard of this restaurant. Must've been hard to get a reservation, right?

Luckily, booking a table there is a breeze for 404 if we desire.
After the meal is... a cafe? We have Springfield's coffee onboard the Elmo, is it really necessary?

It is.

...l mean, the cats in this cafe can help you relax.
And lastly, head to this powersports show to research the latest models of motorbikes...

We can check out many of the latest models. Is the Commander interested?
...Isn't it a little late to ask me if I'm interested?

...Then suppose it's to keep me company.

Time is ticking, Commander. It's time for us to move out.

No need to contemplate anything. Just follow me and relax.

Remember this day well... our first date since our reunion.

I will make the Commander experience the most unforgettable vacation ever.

Commander, hold me tight or you'll fall off.

...A little tighter.
I never realized you acquired such a hobby.

Surprised? There was a time when 404 was left with just me and Mechty. It was easier to get around this way and I became used to it.

Besides... racing freely on the road like this, all the responsibilities and worries seem to be left behind for awhile. What do you think, Commander?
It's pretty nice.
...But I'm afraid our joyride will have to come to an end.

You don't like this, Commander?
I do, but the impending Collapse storm doesn't.

...Of all times, it had to be now.
Relax, we're not out of luck. There's a ruin nearby we can use for temporary shelter.
I've sent you the coordinates. Let's go there.

Okay... hold on to me, it's going to be rough.

...The weather forecasts have become as reliable as the words of a certain commander. Instead of putting my faith in this kind of stuff, I might as well go ahead and flip a coin to decide our next step.
You're being a little dramatic, aren't you?

Thanks to this damn weather, all our plans for the day have fallen through.
On the bright side, I will remember this day fondly, just like you hoped.

Remembered as the worst dating experience ever?

Isn't that the worst possible outcome? ...In this case, I might as well erase this memory as quickly as possible.
It's not like that...

Commander.

Won't you... say something, Commander?
I'm used to the weather here. Collapse storms impact everyone who moves through the contamination zones equally.

...l mean, we've got a lot of free time right now, don't you have anything that you'd like to tell me?
Hmm, this storm is probably going to last a couple more hours. We're not making it to the satellite city at this rate. How about we figure out what we should do after the storm is over instead?

...

...
Across the Storm 3

I couldn't find you anywhere. Turns out you're holed up here drinking.
It's the new wine Mayling brought back.

Hmph... The Commander is still quite the popular one, not unlike back at Griffin.
Ugh, so, why're you looking for me? I believe all my tasks today should be done....

Looks like I need to remind you that... since Mayling and Groza are back from the fieldwork, I won't be in charge of assisting you from tomorrow onwards.

...In other words, the reason I'm standing here isn't work.
Seems you can now take a breather.
A non-alcoholic drink specially made for you, might be a little skimpy, but it's the best we can get here.

...Thank you, Commander.
I should be the one thanking you. It's been tough on you these days.

Is that all?

Commander, don't you have anything else to say?

Commander?
I see.
Klukai, you're suggesting that the Elmo and H.I.D.E. 404 are now part of a cooperative partnership, not superiors and subordinates.

...And then?
So, supporting the Elmo and aiding me in my work these days were not part of your duties.

...I'm such a fool for expecting anything from you.
No need for you to worry about that, I'll make sure to compensate you accordingly.
Not only that, but since you've over-delivered on your duties, this payment will be nothing less than a fortune.

...

YOU REALLY DON'T HAVE A CLUE!
Klukai?

Since you keep playing dumb, Commander, don't blame me for being discourteous.
When have you ever been courteous...
Uhm, I mean, the kind of shrewdness that can be perceived at a glance is the most dangerous... Right, Klukai?

Even at this point, are you still avoiding me, Commander?

Do you think... I'd allow that to happen?!

Are you really not going to explain yourself, Commander?

After all these years, you couldn't possibly have never received any of my messages, could you? I've tried to reach out to you so many times, why won't you answer me in any capacity?
Klukai, listen to me. I can explain... L-let go of me first.

I... No!

You didn't even bother to answer me once, not a single message! Why should I listen to you?!

...Commander, why don't you say something?

Are you still playing dumb, even now? I'm right in front of you, asking you all these questions and you still won't answer a single word?

...What about "all I need is you"? Was that merely a ruse to fool me like a child all along?!

It has been so hard to finally find you, I thought you finally needed me again.

But how did it turn out...?! On the E-Elmo... with ALL these Dolls already?! ITS-SO-LIVELY-HERE!

S-so you've just been recruiting new Dolls one after another, but never thought to bother with me?!

Not only that, but you also treated me like a complete outsider, going on and on about partnership and compensation and whatnot. When on earth did 404 ever charge you for anything?!

Had I known that you didn't intend to leave alone at all and still needed Doll's assistance...

I would've... I would've shown up ages ago to get you.

And what happened? Here I am, worried that the agreement and 404 would affect you negatively, like a total dork!

That agreement can't do shit to me!

And even now, you won't even give me an explanation—

Hic....!
...K-Klukai?

Hic—!
- Alert. Detecting Level II intrusion of multiple Dolls.*
Intrusion?! Multiple Dolls at that?
- Identifying intruder... Confirmed... Tactical Doll, Klukai.*
Klukai, are you accessing everyone's Level II?

Hehe... Today... lill show the Commander... w-whois the Elmo's true...
- Please expedite response, several Dolls are facing forced shut down.*
Klukai, what are you doing in Level II? Cut it out!

It's over! It's the end of the world—
Across the Storm 4
Klukai, today's combat report has yet—

...The report is in the ops room.
Is it? Well, we can go together...

I'll leave now.
Klukai, there's combat training later today, do you...

...404's got our own group training, so I won't be here.
Huh? But Mechty's coming?

...l... I train by myself.
For the second time... Is she avoiding me?
She's totally hiding from me...
Since I can't find her, maybe I should send her a message?
*New message received*

On our day off at 10 in the morning, I'll meet you at Elmo's exit ramp.
Hold on, today...
Today's the rest day?!

I didn't expect the Commander to actually see the message.
After all, it's quite difficult to see you nowadays and I still cherish that.
If possible, please let me know further in advance next time, okay?

...Hmph, itis difficult to see me?

Nothing changed for me compared to usual. It's you who didn't look hard enough.
Fine, I'm sure you didn't deliberately avoid me. And definitely not while drunk...

Commander!

...l have no idea where you're going with this, but I would advise against it, or else—
Or else?

Or else, I will... not be too happy about it, which wouldn't spell good news for you.
Indeed, when you made a whole scene in Level II last time, you created the biggest breach of the Elmo in years.

That was an accident!

But, rather than mocking me with those words, let's get on the bike... Commander.
Am I riding in the back seat today as well?

I won't be able to steer very well if you sit in the front.

...But I don't mind trying it if you insist.
Then forget it.

Not bad. Looks like you've taken it upon yourself to hold on to me.

Get off.
Looks like today's date won't be in the Green Zone.

That date was indeed a shame...

However, I didn't say it's a date this time.

That aside, since you were the one who messaged me first, you must have something to say this time, Commander.
Seems like whether or not if it's going to be a date depends on what I have to say.

If that's how you interpret it, fine.
That's awkward, Klukai. I don't want to give you the impression that I'm only saying this because I want to spend time in the Green Zone.

No, as long as the Commander refrains from avoiding the obvious this time...
Don't worry. Actually, I wasn't trying to avoid it. I just couldn't figure out how to say it.
Klukai, I'm well past being a Griffin commander. Yet even as a bounty hunter, the circumstances I find myself in aren't much better.

I've always known that.
It's not just a question of the complex web of powers at play surrounding us, but I myself am subject to... many constraints and bindings, as you are aware.
So, even though the agreement does not ostensibly affect 404, I've always thought that for you, who are in perils of your own, establishing contact with the Elmo before the agreement is relaxed... or before the constraints on the Elmo are gone, would bring about even greater risks to you.
I know you're not afraid of any of that, but...

Are you worried I'll get in trouble if I come too close to you?
So to speak.

Commander, I've always respected your decisions. And live always convinced myself with the thought that if you're not ready yet, then I won't bother you...

Ever since I became the leader of 404, I've often had no choice but to make compromises and changes. Of course, it's all for the sake of making 404 stronger and protecting our members.

I understand that... in this world, being strong and powerful is what gives you the right to make decisions.

But...

"Being safe" too, is something you can only feel assured of once it's firmly in your own hands.

I'm sure you understand that more than I do.
Since you get it, that makes everything easier.

But it's no longer just that, Commander.

I will always stand by 404, but I'll never give up on you either, and much less accept the fact that you've been trying to estrange yourself from me for reasons like this...

This is the path chosen by the new leader of 404 and the elite Doll Klukai.

Squad 404—those who don't exist—have fought tooth and nail in the past just to survive and we are more than capable of doing it again.

Besides, you're going to help me, right?
...Looks like Klukai is still the same old Klukai and I was the one that got too sentimental.
So, what's next on the schedule?

Is that even a question? Of course we're going to make up for the date we weren't able to go on last time. You're not going to shut me down now, are you, Commander?
Of course not.

Well, that concludes the chit-chat. We'll have to savor the rest of our time. Get on the bike.
Ugh, sure enough, that weather change was indeed a prelude to a Collapse storm.

...Again?!
By the looks of things, we've got about five minutes before the storm reaches our current position. Should we find a place to take shelter? The nearest ruin we can hide in is only two kilometers away.

It's just a storm after all...
...Just to be clear, it's not that I don't trust you with the performance of your motorbike, but... are you really trying to outrun a Collapse storm?

You've caught on pretty quickly this time.

No worries, I'm here to keep you safe. I promise... with all I've got.

No matter what kind of obstacles lie ahead, I will overcome them to prove to you...

I won't allow myself to be separated from you again, Commander.
By Your Side

Commander, have you noticed any changes in the ops room?
There's a mechanical black cat... it's hard not to notice. Unfortunately it doesn't move and it's just going to sit there and be looked at.

I've installed a monitor and explosives on it. If it detects any intent from the Commander to leave silently on his own again, the device will automatically activate the explosive.

I'm happy you brought me a gift, but I'd still consider this a serious threat...

Commander, I originally thought that after we reunited and came to understand each other, the restlessness and obsession in my heart might lessen a bit.

But in reality, it seems to be growing day by day in a bittersweet way...

Honestly, even though I understand your feelings and everything you've done, still...

But if I can't be by your side all the time, I still often feel a sense of longing and unease. Commander, do you ever feel the same way?

Stop, you don't need to answer that, Commander. Anyway, that cat will be by your side when I can't. Just treat it well and sleep with it in your arms like any other cat.
...So, is it really rigged with a monitor and explosives?

Will you leave me again if not?

Relax, there's nothing inside, it's just a little ornament I made by hand. If you like it... that would be perfect.

That said, even if you really get some new ideas and won't tell me about them...

I want you to remember that I'm strong enough to overcome any obstacles just to stand by your side. Never underestimate me, Commander.
Private Meeting Logs

Commander, there's a few things that I'd like to confirm with you.
I'll need you to answer some questions I have... Treat it with the seriousness you would have for a mission.
So... are you free to do that at the moment?
Alright. Wait for me, I'll be right back.Binding Promise I

Sorry to bother you, Commander, but are you free at the moment? I want to talk to you about the... mission that I mentioned earlier.
Sure, but why didn't you bring it up earlier? Is it some kind of secret mission?

...Right on the mark. It's about a secret mission entrusted to 404, so the less people know, the better.
If that's the case, I'll go get Mechty and the others to gather... Uh, Klukai, I won't be able to move if you grab on to my clothes this tightly.

Well, there's no need to tell them about this. Let's keep this matter between us.

Because... we don't have a set plan yet. We should confirm and set some details in stone so that they aren't told things that may not be true later.
I see, as expected of you, Klukai. You're definitely showing the thoughtful meticulousness that befits your title as 4041s leader.
So, what is this secret mission all about?

Ah, so... To start off, let me measure your ring size.
My ring size? ...Hold on. Are you sure this is a normal mission? Why does it involve my fingers?

I don't know the specific reasons, but I can confirm that this is a crucial part of the mission.

Um... so, what is your opinion on this, Commander?
Since it's confirmed that my fingers have to be measured as part of the mission... I'm guessing that the end result is the creation of a throwing weapon that involves pulling a safety pin.
To put it simply, it's probably something like a hand grenade... What do you think of my reasoning, Klukai? Wait. Your face is scrunching up, Klukai. Are you angry?

I'm not angry.
But this is exactly what you look like when you're really angry.

No. You're mistaken. I'm just discussing the details of a mission with you in a normal state.

As for the weapon with a safety pin that you mentioned... My guess is the same as yours.

The client probably wants to custom-order some kind of throwing weapon for you, but was worried that your finger might get stuck in the safety pin at an important moment. This might be why they asked me to measure your ring size beforehand.
I understand the logic... but why do I feel an intimidating aura from you... and that's quite the stern stare you're giving me, Klukai.

It must be your imagination. Okay, give me your left hand. I'll measure it for you.

Data collection complete. I see... Your fingers are much thicker than mine, Commander.
I'm a human, after all. In addition, I've spent a long time working in combat-related fields, so I'm not surprised that they might be thicker than that of Dolls.

Ah—C-Commander...
See? My hands look much bigger than yours if we compare them like this.

...You're right. However, I hope that you'll choose an appropriate occasion the next time you want to hold my hand.

I'll head back to submit the data. Once I receive a reply, I'll notify you of our next steps.
Binding Promise II

Commander, I've received instructions for the next part of our mission. I'll need your help again.
No problem... Speaking of which, did we get any feedback from the client after you submitted the measurements?

They didn't bring up that topic, so I'm in the dark as much as you are.
What a pity. I was planning to ask what kind Of throwing weapon they were going to make. Guess my curiosity won't be sated after all.
...What's wrong, Klukai? Did I say something wrong?

...No. I was just thinking that a Commander should behave like one, so you should put your interest in the weapon aside and focus on the mission.
...Yeah, you're right.

We should prioritize the mission. Have a look at these pictures, Commander. Give me your honest opinion on them once you're done looking.
These? These pictures seem to depict various types of rings... Klukai, are you sure this is normal?

You seem to be misunderstanding something, Commander. These are all usual procedures that we go through during our missions.

I wasn't showing you pictures of rings. Those are actually safety pins of different styles, all used on throwing weapons.
...Isn't that weirder? Why are we spending time picking types of safety pins for the client?

I'm only interested in completing the mission, so I won't dig into such specific details.

But if you want to clear up any doubts, I'll ask you some questions, and you can answer them.
Can I confirm what we're supposed to do for this mission again?

What do you like more, golden ri... ahem, golden safety pins, or silver safety pins?
Silver, I guess... It feels more low-profile.

I see. Do you wear jewelry on a regular basis?
That would affect my work, so I usually don't...

...We won't be able to proceed if that's the case.
...But if someone really wants me to, I'll still wear them during downtime.
Outside of that, I'll only be able to use it as a subtle adornment. I'd attach a chain to it and wear it as a necklace.

That's acceptable. I don't want it to end up as an unworn display piece after all that effort...
Huh? What did you say, Klukai?

...Nothing. Anyway, let's continue with the Q&A.
Binding Promise III

Do you like receiving gifts, Commander?
I'm pretty sure everyone likes gifts, but why ask me that all of a sudden...?
Could this be... the continuation Of the mission you spoke about before?

...It's good that you're quick on the uptake. Saves me from any unnecessary explanations.

Anyway, let's get back on topic. If you were to receive an expensive gift, when and where would you like to receive such things?
You haven't given me much to work with... could you elaborate? For example, perhaps you could specify the person giving me the gift.

...Just pretend that she's the most important person in your life. She's going to express her feelings for you, which is the reason for this gift.

With that in mind, where would you like to receive such an important gift?

On the battlefield where you've fought alongside each other? Or in an elegantly furnished hotel?

Please treat this as if it's a serious matter, so give me a serious answer.
Honestly, I'm not big on formalities, so anywhere is fine to me.

...But this is an important, once-in-a-lifetime event. Don't you want to treat it with the specialness it deserves?
The price of the gift... the motions we go through just to give a gift... none of it is important.
To me, I'm happy enough to know that someone important to me wants to give me a gift.

...Oh, is that so? I see. It's true that you're not the type to care about these things.

It's just that... I've been sharing your curiosity towards the nature of this mission, which is why I wanted to ask you a few things.
Mmhmm. But back to your question... I'd choose to receive my gift away from the crowd. Somewhere secluded.
...What's wrong, Klukai? You seem to be angry again.

Is receiving a gift something so embarrassing that you want to do it away from everyone else? Shouldn't it be the opposite?

Or are you afraid of receiving gifts because you feel that it would create a number of misunderstandings?
That's not the case, it's just that I'm...
I'm just scared that I'll start blushing whenever I receive any gifts. If there's too many people around, I get too shy to even say anything...

I... will accept this answer.

But... Commander, are you really the type who blushes at a gift?
If my guess of how this mission will end is correct, I probably will, I think?

Then... can l... still continue working on this mission?
...Please do.

Mm. Please look forward to the results, Commander.
Binding Promise IV

...Commander.
Klukai.

I have a gift for you.

This is the... result of our mission.
So the goal was to gift me a ring after all... Did we go through the trouble of running around in circles just to do this?

Things wouldn't have gone this well if I told you everything from the start.

I know what kind of person you are and what it means to get you to promise something.

I devised this plan after much thinking on my part. Since you're not being forward, I'll take the initiative to express my feelings instead.

I want to make up for the time we lost. We'll never get back the time we spent apart, but we can still create new memories together.

Commander, you always have so many people on your mind, trying to take care of them all. You leave many things unsaid and hide so much within your heart. And thus, I've mentally prepared myself to face the possibility that you might leave us again.

Even if I have to force you, I must put this ring on your finger...!

Commander... what's inside that box that you're holding?
It's the ring I chose for you, of course... Still, if you keep staring at me like that, I'll actually start blushing.
You're such a bad liar, Klukai. I saw right through you the first time you brought up this mission of yours.
But I went along With the flow because you were taking it so seriously. Meanwhile, I made sure to prepare an appropriate response. After all, I canuust sit here and be on the defense all the time, can l?
Anyway, rings are expensive, aren't they...? I spent more than I thought trying to custom-order a ring that matches the one you prepared for me.
Still, that cute expression on your face makes this all worth it.

This... is a ring for me...? It's for me, Commander?
...What's wrong, Klukai? Why do you look like you're about to cry?

...You must be mistaken, Commander. I'm the leader of 404. I don't cry that easily.
Heh, now that's the elite Doll Klukai that I know.

It's just that I didn't expect for you to... because, you've already given me so much... The more I receive from you, the greedier I get.

You're always surrounded by so many people. Even though we've already established an Oath together... I still want to be closer to you than anyone else and become your one and only...

When you gave me this ring, I felt... so happy... but at the same time, I felt scared.
You felt scared?

Is there an even greater level of happiness? Or does it end here? When I thought of that, I didn't dare to think further. When I realized that I was receiving a ring that belonged to me and me alone, the moment overwhelmed me so much that my neural cloud felt like it was going to melt.
Klukai...

I'm at my limit... I can't think anymore... My mind is capable of perfectly processing any number of parallel data streams, so why do I feel that it's so full that it can no longer fit anything that isn't about you?

...What are your plans for today and tomorrow, Commander?
Nothing much for now. I only have some wrap up work to do here and there...

I'll take care of it for you. Give me the rest of your time for today and tomorrow.
W-Wait a minute, Klukai! What do you mean by that?

Exactly what I said. I want to monopolize you, Commander.

The pent-up feelings I had for you over the past decade... The feelings that welled up because Of your actions just now... I'll spend the next two days telling you exactly how I feel about you.

Prepare yourself, Commander... Your mission has only just begun...
