The ART556 is a select fire 5.56x45mm caliber assault rifle designed by Brazilian manufacturer Taurus. The weapon apparently closely resembles the FN SCAR and the Remington ACR.

Very little is known regarding the performance of this assault rifle, although some basic features can be seen on the weapon's exterior. The weapon seems to be using the same receiver group as Taurus' MT9 G2 9mm SMG, with an upper receiver made of aluminum alloy and a lower constructed of a polymer material with an integrated magazine well grip. Based on the visible gas cylinder, the rifle is likely utilizing a gas-operated, rotating-bolt action similar to the FN SCAR.

The ART556 has a forward-facing charging handle, and the ejection port can be swapped to the other side of the rifle. Combined with a safety selector on both sides of the receiver, this makes the rifle potentially ambidextrous. The fire selector switches the rifle between semi-automatic, 3-round burst, and fully automatic fire, and also functions as a safety. The weapon stock can be folded to the side for easy storage.

Aiming of the weapon can be done using either the rifle's built-in iron sights or a separate optic. Optics can be attached on the long Picatinny rail placement on the top of the receiver which extends all the way down to the muzzle end of the barrel. Shorter rails can be found on the side and bottom of the barrel for attaching other combat accessories. The weapon is likely fed with STANAG pattern magazines. It is to be noted that the magazine well looks big enough to potentially accept 7.62x51mm NATO/.308 Winchester cartridge magazines, hinting that the weapon could potentially be modified to fire the larger caliber.

Taurus seems to have offered three different length barrels for the weapon. Other than ART556, Taurus also advertised a semi-automatic only carbine version of this rifle, in the form of the CT556.<ref name = "art556 firearmblog">[http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2011/05/12/taurus-art556-assault-rifle-and-ct556-rifle/ Firearm Blog entry on ART556]</ref>

| backgroundinfo = The ART556 Assault Rifle is a Brazilian Gun designed by Taurus as its name suggests, is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO. Externally, the rifle appears to have borrowed features from the FN SCAR and the Bushmaster ACR. It has a forward charging handle that looks like it is able to be switched to either the left or right side. The upper is aluminum and the lower is polymer with an integrated magwell grip. The gun appears to use an AR-15 compatible pistol grip. It has a safe/semi/3 round burst/full selector switch.

Weapon Background[edit]

Other than ART556, Taurus also advertised a semi-automatic only carbine version of this rifle, in the form of the CT556.[1]
