M1903 Springfield has been issued with Pedersen Device, the attachment that able to fire smaller caliber(.30-18 or 7.62x20 Longue) semi-automatically and increasing ability of close combat for trench clearing. The magazine itself were placed diagonally at the right of receiver and hold 40 ammo. Unfortunately, the World War I had to be ended before being delivered to American Armies in Europe. Moreover, Pedersen Device had been stopped their production after losses with more-compact full-automatic SMG(Thompson), Semi-Automatic(M1 Garand), Full-Automatic Battle Rifle(BAR) and more devastating shotgun(M1897).[2]
The M1903 Springfield 'Air Service' was introduced for pilot as survival rifle, in case of hard landing and managed enough to survive from the crash. The Air Service M1903 uses 25-round detachable magazine which useful for pilots who doesn't have time to reload with 5-rounds stripper clips, and reduced the weight by cutting the half of the wood. However, this weapon only appeared in 1919 Ordnance Storage Catalogue and doesnt entered US military service because still retain its mechanism and doesn't provide significant Rate of Fire.[3]
