Private Meeting Logs

World's No. 1 Nice Person I

Balthilde
Comander. Please move aside. You’re blocking the bear’s paw from receiving sunlight.
Commander
Huh? What’s the bear’s paw…
Balthilde

The bear’s paw is a type of succulent that I’ve been growing aboard the Elmo. They’ve been in a rather poor state lately, so I looked up lots of information and determined that they are suffering from a lack of direct sunlight.

I brought them into my dorm room as the daylighting furnishings here are capable of helping them meet their sunlight requirements.
(Balthilde stands unmoving, tool-laden hands at her sides like some sort of stiff, unpowered bot on standby.)
Commander
Oh… I… see… Good work, Balthilde.
Balthilde
Anything you need, Commander?
Commander
Nothing much. I just wanted to check how you were doing.
Balthilde
I’m good.
Commander
Mm…
(Balthilde approaches me with a pair of pliers in her hands, then turns to repair a small hair dryer. The dismantled hair dryer’s various parts are arranged according to category and size. An open toolbox is sitting on her table.)
Commander
You seem busy…
Balthilde
Not really.
Commander
Then… maybe I should come again when you’re free?
Balthilde
I’m not busy.
Commander
Huh…?
Balthilde

I’m already done with dismantling the hair dryer. Now, I just have to replace the broken parts and reassemble it.

I don’t have to spend much computing power on this kind of thing.
Commander
So Balthilde, you mean that I can talk to you while you work on the repairs?
(Balthilde lowers her head, then gives me a subtle nod. A faint blush quietly shows itself on her cheeks.)
Commander
You’re the one who handles most mechanical engineering tasks like these in the Doll Community, right? Great work.
Balthilde
Work is a responsibility. Plus, this is all I’m good for.
Commander
More people should learn from your work ethic.
Balthilde
Perhaps.
(Balthilde finishes assembling the hair dryer. She connects it to power before giving it to me.)
Balthilde
Do you want to try it out, Commander?
(I take the hair dryer offered to me and raise the heat level by one notch. A torrent of heat blasts me in the face; I was even more unprepared for the hair dryer to vibrate this much and I lose my grip.)
Balthilde

Watch out, Commander!

(Hisses in pain) I’m fine. Stay put, I’ll turn it off.
(Balthilde manages to catch the hair dryer before it hits the ground, but sustains a burn to the synthetic skin on her hand. She turns it off and looks at me.)
Commander
Sorry, I’ll get some ice for your hand.
Balthilde

No need. I’m a Doll. We’re not that delicate.

This kind of thing happens quite often whenever I’m working at the Doll Community.

World's No. 1 Nice Person II

Commander
Doesn’t it hurt?
Balthilde
I’m used to it. Much worse has happened before.
Commander
Sorry, I guess it was a pretty stupid question.
Balthilde
Stupid? What are you referring to?
Commander
I’ll go get a towel and some ice for you. Wait for me.
(When I got back to Balthilde’s room, she was already working on fixing a terminal that was used to the point of breakage. The cover had been removed, exposing the circuit board.)
Commander
Why don’t you take a break, Balthilde?
Balthilde
I’m not tired.
Commander
But we still have to treat your hand.
Balthilde
It’s just a minor injury. Nothing much for a Doll.
Commander
I’m your Commander.
Balthilde
...Alright. Since it’s an order from you, I’ll follow it.
(Balthilde sits on the chair, looking at me with unease. She seems unsure of how to conduct herself.)
Commander
...Give me your hand.
Balthilde
Okay.
Commander
The hand with the injury.
Balthilde
Sorry.
(I wrap an ice cube in the towel and wait for it to melt a little before covering Balthilde’s scalded skin with the towel. Her expression is that of confusion, before she lowers her head, unable to meet my gaze.)
Balthilde

Thanks…

Commander, there’s something that I have to tell you.
(We converse while I hold her hand in mine, checking to see if the swelling has gone down.)
Commander
What’s wrong?
Balthilde

I told you that there is no need to spend this much effort to take care of an injury this minor. I’m a Doll, you know?

You’re just wasting resources and your labor trying to treat it with ice, Commander.

There is no need for you to do this if it happens again in the future.

I know that you’re my superior and that I should listen to your orders, but I have a responsibility to inform you of any low-quality decisions that you’re making.

With all that said, I did do something wrong here. I shouldn’t have asked you to check whether or not the hair dryer was successfully repaired.

I didn’t anticipate that you would lose your grip on it, so it was a failure on my part as your subordinate when I decided to hand you a dangerous object. I would like to apologize for this.

That’s all.
Commander
Hmm…
Balthilde

You’ve been quiet for a long time, Commander.

Did I say something wrong again? Sorry. I shouldn’t be like this.
Commander
You’re quick to apologize, but do you know what was wrong with what you said?
Balthilde
I…
(Balthilde lowers her head in dejection. She stares at the circuit board with her peripheral vision, gripping her pliers tighter.)
Balthilde

I don’t know, but whenever I put things plainly as they are, people are unhappy about it.

So whenever something similar happens, I apologize immediately as people’s moods seem to return to normal if I do that. However, this happens over and over again.

I don’t know what to do anymore, Commander. I don’t know what’s wrong with the way I talk, or why I keep upsetting other people.

I should just stay quiet. Can’t cause problems if nothing is said.
Commander
I believe I have a pretty good grasp on what’s going on now. You haven’t done anything wrong, Balthilde. Let us deal with this together the next time it happens.

World's No. 1 Nice Person III

Commander
Can you trust me, Balthilde?
(Balthilde’s head shoots back up, her eyes looking into mine with determination.)
Balthilde

...I don’t like humans very much, but you’re different from the others, Commander.

When I chose you, I chose to place my very existence in your hands.
Commander
Hmm, let us do a small exercise for starters. Balthilde, can you tell what kind of emotional state I’m in right now?
Balthilde

Calm and serious?

Why did you ask me to do that, Commander?
Commander
Try to give it a think, Balthilde. Why did I ask you to do that?
Balthilde

I… It’s because…

If I can accurately determine the emotional state of my audience, I could adjust my statements based on their current status…

For example, you're displaying calmness and seriousness right now, so I can ask you more questions…

…without you getting angry or frustrated…?
Commander
That’s about right, Balthilde. You have a real knack for this. How did you feel when you were trying to determine my state of mind?
Balthilde

...It felt strange. It’s tiring.

I’ve practically never done such things before. My sensory module feels like it’s overloading. I’ve spent… too much computing power…

It’s… difficult for me to play along with people’s emotions, as a Doll with reduced emotion analysis capabilities.
Commander

You weren’t designed for such tasks, so it’s normal that you feel that it’s difficult and tiring.

But these frustrations aren’t limited to Dolls. Humans often encounter such difficulties as well.

We agonize over how to better communicate with others, how to improve our own likability so that we’d be more valued and loved.

Yet these troubles won’t stop people from becoming likable. It doesn’t matter whether we are good at socializing or not, intention matters the most.
Balthilde
Intention…
Commander
You’re always thinking about others, repairing and maintaining so many Dolls in silence. Plus, you’re quite the courageous Doll in combat. People will like you even if you are a little dull.
Balthilde
...! W-what the heck are you saying, Commander–
Commander

In addition, you’ll get better at analyzing people’s emotions the more you do it. As long as you keep practicing, your speed and accuracy will definitely go up.

We’re just like the molds used to make modifying tools more convenient… Humans aren’t that different from Dolls.

It’s just a matter of time. So I know you’ll do well in the future. Don't worry and try not to feel too anxious about it. Keep calm and believe in yourself.
Balthilde

You… have a way with words…

You make, people happy.

I don’t understand how making me happy benefits you, but I’ll take it as a gain for myself.
