{{Dialogue|(Several days pass without any updates from Phaetusa. I have no clue how that "plan" of hers is turning out. Since we planned to go to a nearby market for research today, I should ask her about it then.)|}}

{{Dialogue|Here you are, Phaetusa, Let's head out–|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(I look up to meet my visitor in the eyes and immediately realize they belong to Sweeper.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Tsk... What are you staring at?|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|I see that you're in charge of the body today.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Mm-hmm.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|What about Phaetusa?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...You can't be serious.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|You two literally just fought yesterday. You think she's in the mood to see you?|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|Ah... Right... That did happen.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(Sweeper puts on a face of utter exasperation.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Sometimes your oblivioiusness really infuriates me... Anyway, I'll be taking her place for now, so bear with me, human.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|(With that, Sweeper stomps out of the ops room first.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Just as I'm about to follow after her, the terminal in my pocket begins ringing nonstop.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(I pick it up.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Heya, Commander!|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|(Phaetusa's face appears on the screen.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...Phaetusa? What are you doing?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Creating an opportunity for you and Nyxie to spend some time alone, of course~|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Oh! Also, please ignore my presence. Just pretend that I'm a virtual pet on your terminal.|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|Nyxie and I just had a heated exchange; she's probably ready to stand up for you right now.|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|I think you're really pushing it, Phaetusa.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Relax, Commander. She won't notice.|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|Just remember to act natural, okay?|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|Natural, huh...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Oi, Commander! You coming or not? What's taking so long?|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|(Sweeper's voice comes from not far away. I quickly put away the terminal and hurry after her.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Walking side by side with Sweeper through the marketplace, the bustling crowd endlessly flows past us. Occasionally, the inertia from trying to avoid the coming traffic causes me to bump into her, compelling me to apologize repeatedly.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Mmh!|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|Sorry... I–|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...Stop apologizing over and over again. I'm not some porcelain doll that'll shatter at the slightest touch.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|I didn't mean to imply you're fragile. I just remembered that you're not a big fan of physical contact.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I know how to read the room, okay? It's kind of unavoidable with how crowded this place is... Besides, you wouldn't act this courteous with Phaetusa, would you?|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|I think I still would. But Phaetusa's...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Hmph. I bet she'd actually be delighted if you brushed shoulders with her... Geez, why am I even thinking about this right now...|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|Look, I'm fine with having a bit of small talk with you... but we should focus on the task right now.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(We stop by a vendor's stall. The unusually packed crowd catches my attention.)|}}
{{Dialogue|What are they fighting over?|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|Looks like some kind of canned good... Let me grab one first.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(I sneak into the horde and snatch one for myself.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(The ingredients listed on the can look fairly ordinary, except for...)|}}
{{Dialogue|Hey, that customer over there, you gonna buy it or not? Those sandshrub cans sell like hotcakes, and I don't even have enough for everyone who wants them. Hurry up and put it back if you're not going to buy it! Don't get in my way when I'm trying to make money...|Contaminated Zone Merchant}}
{{Dialogue|Oh, my bad. Here you go.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I suppose your supply problem is not caused by logistics.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Of course not. It's because of the ingredient.|Contaminated Zone Merchant}}
{{Dialogue|See this sandshrub? Highly nutritious with tons of plant protein, but it's really hard to grow.|Contaminated Zone Merchant}}
{{Dialogue|Only a few Yellow Zone greenhouses and some Green Zone facilities can supply it. Naturally, that's nowhere near enough to meet the demand.|Contaminated Zone Merchant}}
{{Dialogue|(I ponder thoughtfully after leaving the stall.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Phae–I mean, Sweeper, check the cultivation environment of this sandshrub for me please.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Sure... Hold on a sec...|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|(Sweeper frowns.)|}}
{{Dialogue|How does this database thing work again...?|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|It's fine, take your time. I'm not in a hurry either.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(But Sweeper still looks somewhat anxious.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Root directory... No... Tsk, Phaetusa's usually the one handling all this stuff...|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|She was pretty clumsy at first too. She made a lot of mistakes, but eventually she got the hang of it.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Hmph... Spare me your pep talk.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|(While still putting up a tough attitude, Sweeper visibly relaxes at the mention of Phaetusa.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Got it.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|According to the data, sandshrub cultivation is very rigorous and demanding, but growing it at the thermal plant's experimental farm isn't beyond the realm of possibility. Current farming environment would need lots of improvements, though... Let me check...|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|Don't worry. No need to reach a conclusion yet. We still have lots of things to look at. Just note this one down for now so we can hold a meeting and analyze them all later.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Oh... Okay... Logging it under...|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|(Hesitation appears on Sweeper's face again.)|}}
{{Dialogue|I remember Phaetusa has a special folder called "24/7 Post-Apocalypse Wasteland Farming Plan." Try looking for that.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...What kind of name is that? Ah, found it.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|Log... ging...|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|(What should be just inputting a few simple words takes Sweeper a while to complete.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(As our eyes meet again, I notice a complicated look on her face.)|}}
{{Dialogue|It's none of my business, but... what exactly is going on between you and her?|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|Her? You mean Phaetusa?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|You know she's a fanatical human-lover, especially toward you... That document you had me open... had lots of extremely detailed comments.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|She's been venting to me about you constantly these days. While I agree you've got all sorts of problems, lots of those accusations were clearly not real...|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|Ah...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(Uncertain as to how to respond, I remain silent, and my hesitation in turn has cemented to Sweeper the fact that Phaetusa and I really fell out.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(She sighs.)|}}
{{Dialogue|I know something happened between you two... A misunderstanding or whatever that I'm not aware of.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|Even though watching you two bicker back and forth really gets on my nerves... I don't like how awkward things have gotten between you two now.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|...And that's bothering you?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|I guess, but what I really dislike is seeing her look so lifeless... She's always liked you and relies on you. If there's any misunderstanding, you should talk it out with her.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|I know you're not malicious, just slow at times. I'm sure she will forgive you if you apologize earnestly.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|(Hearing all those words coming from Sweeper in one go nearly stuns me.)|}}
{{Dialogue|...What's that reaction? Have I got something on my face?|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|No, I'm just a little surprised... Since you've always hated humans and didn't really fancy me either, I thought you'd be happy to have gained a "kindred spirit" in her.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|What's that supposed to mean... Y-you know... I just say things in the heat of the moment at times...|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|And a lot of that sounded like fair criticism to me... Like how you just said that I'm slow–I must admit, I can be a little dense at times.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|T-that's because you're always focused on missions and work and have making everyone's life better as a priority.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|...But I can totally be as hypocritical as you said. If Groza's carefully prepared nutritious meals taste bad, I throw them away in secret.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...Don't tell her that, please.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Understandable. I wouldn't force myself to eat something that tastes awful either.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|And I can also be just as selfish as you said... I overwork Mayling and even steal her rice wine.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|But you still pay her for the overtime, and she's a mechanic as well. Drinking less is probably good for her health.|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|...You can't just put a positive spin on that...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(It suddenly feels as if I am looking at Phaetusa 2.0.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(Sweeper also seems to realize what she has been saying as her face suddenly flushes bright red.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Y-you... I-I... I'll keep looking around the market now! Geez, why are we wasting our time on this?! We won't make it at this rate!|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|(With that, she pushes through the crowd and runs off like a startled Obshare.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Sweeper...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|(I reach out, nearly hitting a passerby with my hand before quickly lowering it. My voice is quickly drowned out by the crowd as well.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(I sigh. The terminal in my pocket starts ringing again. I retreat to a quiet corner before picking it up. As expected, Phaetusa appears on the screen. Seeing the identical face gives me a strange sense of whiplash and dissonance.)|}}
{{Dialogue|Aha, Commander! The plan's really making progress, hm~? Nyxie finally revealed her true thoughts~|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|Looks like she really means the reverse of what she normally says.|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|...It's indeed a rare sight, but I'd say we should call it quits here.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Why? I thought you wanted her to be more forthcoming?|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|On any other day, you'd have to jump through so many unnecessary hoops to fish an answer out of her... I say, we keep pushing her a little further, and eventually she'll become much more outspoken! That'll make conversing with her so much easier, don't you think?|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|That's not how it works... Everyone's got their own way of expressing themselves.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|Sometimes being straightforward like you is good, but I don't dislike Sweeper's way either...|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...You don't?|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|Because I know her words were never meant with true ill intent; those things she said about me were real flaws.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|She's standing up for me now because she wants to comfort me, as I just had a falling out with you. Sometimes I overlook a lot of important things with how busy I get, so having someone like her to remind me of those things is actually pretty handy... Besides, it's not like I don't know what kind of person I am.|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|...|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|(Phaetusa's lips are left parted, but nothing comes out.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(After a while, I spot an emotion in her eyes–one that feels out of place for her, and one that I've never seen before.)|}}
{{Dialogue|So... Nyxie's better? Being like Nyxie is actually better for you?|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|...That's not really the point, is it? What I'm trying to say is maybe the plan should–|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|–Do you like Nyxie more than me?|Phaetusa}}
{{Dialogue|(Phaetusa cuts me off so uncharacteristically with a question that leaves me speechless, like a Doll that had just crashed.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(It takes me a while to gradually find my voice again.)|}}
{{Dialogue|No! Ehm... Hold on, where did you get that from?|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|What I meant is we shouldn't keep pushing Sweeper–|Commander}}
{{Dialogue|–So your "falling out" was just an act?|Sweeper}}
{{Dialogue|(A pair of feet enters my field of vision. I look up and meet Sweeper's face, her expression stormy and undecipherable.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(The market is far too noisy that I didn't even notice she had returned.)|}}
{{Dialogue|(When did she come back? How much did she hear?)|}}

| Phaetusa | Profile | Quotes |
Record 1
Phaetusa's initial designation was the NeuroMIND 4.0—a chat-based artificial intelligence specifically engineered to handle and process vast quantities of data, archives, and research materials. It was installed within the central control system of the Marley Genomics Research Center.
The research center was founded with the vision of building an "ark" to safeguard human civilization in the likely scenario where it would suffer a devastating collapse during potential apocalyptic events.
Within the facility, Phaetusa stood witness to the full span of human culture as well as the emergence and evolution of life itself. In time, "safeguarding human civilization" became deeply ingrained in her base layer.
Once she received a Doll frame, this base layer morphed into a profound affection and attachment to humanity.
"I like all humans, especially you, Commander!"
Record 2
Before human civilization could be destroyed by an "act of God", the Marley Research Center was first destroyed as a result of humans during WWIII.
In the final moments, Phaetusa transferred her data into a janitor robot and narrowly escaped destruction. From that day onward, she embarked on a journey of aimless wandering.
Yet, as if ordained by fate, she came across an abandoned, yet largely intact Doll frame. After some rudimentary repairs, she plugged herself into the frame and was immediately greeted by a strange current coursing through her mind. A series of clear yet fragmented visions flashed before her eyes: a cage of interwoven darkness and crimson, a sea of raging flames, countless pairs of hollow, bewildered eyes, and orderly formations of Dolls bearing a certain resemblance to this very frame...
Simultaneously, a cold, piercing voice resonated across Level II.
"Who are you? What are you doing inside my frame?"
—Such was the fateful encounter between Phaetusa and Sweeper.
Record 3
After awaking from its energy-depleted slumber, Sweeper immediately sensed that something was amiss—there was another consciousness inside her frame. Moreover, for reasons unknown, all system diagnostics reported full compatibility between that "intruder" and her frame's architecture.
She learned much later that this was enabled by Phaetusa's extensive modification to the frame during her days of wandering, allowing her to achieve near-universal compatibility with any hardware.
The first action Sweeper took upon awakening was attempting to find her way back to Sangvis Ferri's domain, back under Mastermind's guidance.
However, the desolate scene of her original outpost, which she had endured great hardships to reach, made one thing clear: Sangvis Ferri was no more, and she no longer had a place to return to.
Now, wandering alongside Phaetusa—an entity that could hardly be considered a Doll to her—while gathering intelligence appeared to be the only logical course of action.
Record 4
Phaetusa and Sweeper did not get along at first—their personalities and outlooks clashed greatly.
Unlike herself, Phaetusa was excessively cheerful and enthusiastic, harboring immense and "unfounded" goodwill toward humanity.
Meanwhile, Sweeper bore deep prejudice and distrust toward all humans, predominantly due to the actions of a certain "cruel and evil Griffin Commander." Admittedly, such an attitude was undoubtedly radical, considering that "good people" always existed, if only by statistical probability. Alas, Sweeper still adhered to the mindset of "better safe than sorry" and regarded all humans with the same deep loathing.
However, reality soon taught her why such an approach was untenable within human society. As interactions with humans became unavoidable due to their wandering lifestyle, Sweeper's rigid and openly hostile manner of communication proved to be completely ineffective, whereas Phaetusa was totally in her element whenever humans were involved.
Only then did Sweeper realize that this "hack" of an AI that she kept around out of boredom—or more likely because she didn't know how to chase her out—had its benefits. As a result, Sweeper relinquished control of the frame to Phaetusa and retreated to Level III, remaining dormant and only emerging occasionally to remind Phaetusa whenever she's about to be deceived by a human.
Somehow, life gradually began to feel less monotonous after having done so.
Record 5
"Phaetusa? Ah, I don't really know her personally, but I do see her talking to herself quite often..." said a certain twin-drill-haired Doll unacquainted with Phaetusa.
"She's 'that', isn't she... You know, seeing imaginary friends and all... Can't believe even Dolls are designed with settings like that," said a certain green-haired Doll unacquainted with Phaetusa.
"I don't know... Sometimes she would turn into a completely different person, as if a switch had been flipped... She could be all cheerful one moment, then turn completely cold the next... I guess she really is 'that'..." said a certain twin-drill-haired Doll unacquainted with Phaetusa.
"Oh, I remember now! It's called being a 'chuunibyou'. Heard it was a popular phenomenon among the humans for a while," said a certain green-haired Doll unacquainted with Phaetusa.
"Who taught you that term?" said a certain twin-drill-haired Doll unacquainted with Phaetusa.
"Mechty," said a certain green-haired Doll unacquainted with Phaetusa.
This was why Sweeper would often consider getting a new frame of her own, but after putting up with Phaetusa's excited babbling in her ears day after day, she couldn't help but let out a sigh.
Forget it—without Phaetusa, who would handle those pesky social interactions on her behalf?
Moreover, if she were to raise the idea, Phaetusa would undoubtedly question her endlessly about what she had done wrong for Sweeper to even consider such a thing.
In lieu of that, she decided to go and have a "cordial" conversation with this "Mechty" instead.
Record 6
Recently, Phaetusa became captivated by capsule toys, and she devoted herself entirely to these collectibles with one specific series in particular—"Build-a-Human! Collect different human body parts and assemble them into various kinds of humans!"
"..."
"This is a must-have for fellow human-enthusiasts~"
I looked at the table covered in a chaotic assortment of limbs and torsos and felt a chill run down my spine.
"I can see the appeal of this from a certain point of view, but as a living, breathing human myself... this is very unsettling, to put it mildly."
Phaetusa looked quite puzzled at my reaction, and I rubbed my forehead with my palm before coming up with an explanation.
"Ok, imagine this—someone strips you down into screws, nuts, safety bolts, and ball joints, then—"
"Ah! How could there be such indecent and obscene capsule toys!"
It seemed like I got it through her.
"Although... Phaetusa, with how many you purchased... are you looking for some specific parts...?"
"Yes. In fact, I was trying to put this together... Ta-da!"
Phaetusa presented me with a figurine as if offering a treasured prize. Upon closer inspection, this half-finished figurine, consisting of only a head, a torso, and a single arm, bore an unmistakable resemblance to me...
"I only became interested in these capsule toys because I saw parts that looked really like you, Commander. Look at the shape of the eyes and the mouth... It's almost like they molded them after you. There's no way I'm missing this kind of collectible!"
I felt an indescribable emotion as I looked at Phaetusa's delighted expression. After some pondering, I sighed.
"You know what? As long as you're happy with it."
"Hehe, I surely am!"
Record 7
[I must admit, I hated your guts at first. I knew that hatred was artificial and programmed into me, but it had seeped into my mind so deeply given how long we've been at each other's throats.]
[Back when I was still at my outpost, I would keep getting reports from the frontlines—news of which formations or what bases had once again been wiped off the map by a certain Griffin Commander that day. You could say, you were to me what a Grim Reaper is to mortals like you. Your mere existence made me shudder, yet I couldn't help but want to eradicate you.]
[However, after meeting you in person, I realized those preconceptions were distorted. So much of what happened between us was beyond our control. Thinking back to our 'reunion', I couldn't believe I found myself wishing to repeat the same mistake, completely unaware that the path I took had always been mine to choose.
[And you... You made me realize that.]
[So, um... What I'm getting at is, you're no longer my 'Grim Reaper' anymore. As for the path I will take from now on, I will think carefully and choose wisely, just as you taught me.]
[...I won't sign this message. You know who I am.]
Record 8
While Phaetusa and Sweeper technically shared the same frame, they should be regarded as two distinct individuals in practice. Therefore, when purchasing gifts for Phaetusa, it's generally recommended to get two of each, ideally identical, item. However, when it came to clothing...
"What? Trying on new clothes? We already share the frame... Any generic outfit will do."
"No, no, no, Nyxie. You know exactly how different our styles are. Commander's gone to such lengths for us... Can't hurt to try, you know!"
"...There's no reasoning with you."
The black-haired Doll stood somewhat awkwardly on the projection platform. I picked up the tablet used to select outfits.
"Sweeper first, right?"
I tapped the tablet and a Gothic Lolita dress materialized on Sweeper.
"Wow! What a match made in heaven! Come on, Nyxie, make a cool expression."
"What do you mean 'match made in heaven'? We have the same face."
"I guess it's a matter of temperament and expression."
I sized her up carefully before continuing.
"Let's try something else if you don't believe me."
I tapped the tablet again and now a cute, light-colored dress appeared on Sweeper.
"Pffft... As expected, that last dress was a much better fit for Nyxie. This one... it looks as though Nyxie just stole it from the store."
"Shut up. You think you'll look good in this?"
"Heh, let's see, shall we?"
I watched as Sweeper closed her eyes and by the time they reopened, a brilliance and gentleness unexpectedly befitting of that dress had appeared.
"Well, how is it~?"
After several seconds of awkward silence, Sweeper spoke up.
"...There might be some truth in what you said."
"Exactly. One can tell at a glance whenever it's Nyxie!"
"What's the point anyway?" Sweeper turned her face away.
"Sweeper, Phaetusa, even though you two share the same body, I want you to be able to preserve your individuality." I looked earnestly into Phaetusa's eyes, and through those, at Sweeper.
"Both your existences are unique, no matter how you slice it, which is why even the smallest differences deserve respect."
I saw the eyelashes of the Doll before me tremble slightly. I couldn't tell whether it was Sweeper or Phaetusa, but the distinction no longer mattered; I could sense that they were of one mind.
"Okay."
A smile slowly blossomed before me, like a flower blooming in soil nourished by sincerity, gentle and beautiful.
Memories
Season of White and Black 1

Are you busy, Commander?
No, not really.
What’s the matter? Is the new storage module not working properly?
I can ask Mayling if she’s free to—

No, no, no, it’s working great! Now Nyxie and I each get our own separate storage space. Not that I minded sharing with her before, but… it’s something she’s always wanted.

Commander, you’re super thoughtful!
Even if you praise me like that… Are you sure Sweeper likes this addition? I thought she didn’t seem very impressed this morning.

Yes! She absolutely LOVES it!

I can 100% tell.
Music to my ears, then.

You really care about what Nyxie thinks, huh, Commander?
Well… she’s not as forthcoming as you, after all. I can’t even tell whether she’s in a good or a bad mood half of the time, much less what she’s thinking—
Phaetusa, where is Sweeper?

Looks like you finally noticed, Commander.
She’d have jumped in by now if she were here.
What happened?

That’s the reason I’m here, I suppose… Nyxie and I got into an argument… She’s… holed up in the dorm room’s private server right now and refusing to come out…
With how often you two argue, I thought you’d be pros at making up by now.
But since you’re here… I take it I’m involved somehow, and that it’s pretty serious.

(Sigh) Nothing really gets past you…

Nyxie actually likes the separate storage space, yet she insists on pretending she doesn’t. I said that it’s really disingenuous of her to pretend she didn’t care about the Commander’s gift. Before I knew it, we were arguing…
Maybe she really just dislikes it?

No way. She absolutely likes it! I can tell—she complained about sharing storage space with me before, so there’s no reason for her to dislike this.

And honestly, I’m getting tired of arguing over petty squabbles like this…
So you came to me to work out a solution?

Actually… I already have one. I just need your cooperation.
Go on.

Let’s fight, the two of us.
…What?

Although Nyxie always has something about you to whine about, she actually tends to agree with you deep down—she even knows she’s nitpicking just for the sake of it. So, if I suddenly become a “yes-woman” and agree with all her “slander” just to make her feel good, she’ll probably get super grumpy and upset after a while.

Because deep down, she wants to be the one to support and defend you, Commander.

Which means, we’ll finally get to hear what she really thinks~
The classic “only I can trash talk my partner,” huh?

Hehe, you’re quick to pick up on things, Commander.
But what if her real thoughts are exactly what she usually says?

No way! Nope! That’s impossible!

While our neural clouds are independent, the dataflow sometimes overlaps, and I can sense familiar signals from her…
…I reserve my judgment.
But since you said it’s affecting you too, let’s proceed with your suggestion first.

Hehe, you’re the best, Commander!
Season of White and Black 2
It’s been a hot minute since our agreed-upon meetup time and Phaetusa’s nowhere to be seen… Did something happen?
On the contrary! Everything’s going according to plan!
Phaetusa…

Haha, down here, Commander!
Why are you—

Nyxie finally decided to hop out of the server. She’d figure out we’re in cahoots if I visit you using our Doll body.
So she’s out now… Did you two make up?

Sort of?

She probably saw our “falling out” this morning. When I got back to the dorm, she—

Grrrr—I’m seething! It’s the first time since forever that I’ve found the Commander to be this un-cute!

…

He gave up on a 5% profit just like that! That was a LOT of money! He didn’t even ask for our opinion first before agreeing!

I-I’m actually shaking!

…That’s odd.

W-what’s odd?

I don’t know, maybe the whole “Miss Commander-Can-Do-No-Wrong” suddenly disagreeing with him part?

What kind of nickname even is that… A-also, it’s not like I agree with him ALL the time? I’ve certainly criticized him when it was warranted…

Criticized? You mean like the time when he almost downed a full bottle of disinfectant thinking it was a drink, and you were on the side going, “Aww~ The Commander’s so cute and funny”?

…I mean, he IS cute and funny?

Either way, you’re being suspicious.

Come on, don’t say that! Don’t forget that this deal has our hard work in it as well, Nyxie, so I tried to put myself in your shoes and see how I would react…

Oh, is that the case, huh?

See? You always complain that I side with the Commander, but now that I try to consider things from your perspective, you call me weird…

That’s how Doll base layers work. Can’t help with it, sorry.

But it can also gradually grow and be fine-tuned… Maybe you finally realized—

Sure, sure. I did realize!

You’ve got to trust me, Nyxie!

Hmph… I’ll keep an eye on it.
Are you sure it’s “going according to plan”? She obviously realized something’s up.

Hehe. Seems there’s still plenty you need to learn about Nyxie, Commander.

With how much of a tsundere she is, the moment she softens even a little is the moment she’s starting to put all her trust in you.
Is that so…
If she finds out what you’re planning… won’t she get even more upset?

Don’t worry, I won’t let her. I’ll make sure to stop before pushing her too far.
…Fine. You know her the best. I’ll stop telling you what to do.

That’s not “telling me what to do”, that’s just caring about us!

Oh, and, please don’t take what I said to Nyxie to heart!
Hmm? What exactly?

You know, the stuff I said about the deal.

I didn’t actually mean to blame you; it was all to convince Nyxie.
Oh, about that—
I later went back to the mission briefing for a recap, and there were indeed some inadequacies on my part—what you said was right.

No, no, no, no… How could the Commander be wrong?
You know… you’re sharper than you give yourself credit for, Phaetusa. You often catch things that go completely over my head.
So, I would be happier if you could voice your concerns more directly in the future.

…You mean, like how Nyxie acts?
Not exactly, Sweeper’s different.
Speaking of, there’s still something I’m curious about.

Aww, so the Commander wants to learn more about me?

Go ahead! I’ll answer everything!
Why are you so determined to make Sweeper confess her true thoughts?

I-I told you already… I’m tired of arguing over petty squabbles.

Besides, there’s nothing wrong with being honest with each other… Alright, Commander, I need to go back now, otherwise Nyxie might get suspicious.
Oh, right…
Season of White and Black 3
Here you are, Phaetusa, Let's head out–

Tsk... What are you staring at?
I see that you're in charge of the body today.

Mm-hmm.
What about Phaetusa?

...You can't be serious.

You two literally just fought yesterday. You think she's in the mood to see you?
Ah... Right... That did happen.

Sometimes your oblivioiusness really infuriates me... Anyway, I'll be taking her place for now, so bear with me, human.

Heya, Commander!
...Phaetusa? What are you doing?

Creating an opportunity for you and Nyxie to spend some time alone, of course~
...

Oh! Also, please ignore my presence. Just pretend that I'm a virtual pet on your terminal.

Nyxie and I just had a heated exchange; she's probably ready to stand up for you right now.
I think you're really pushing it, Phaetusa.

Relax, Commander. She won't notice.

Just remember to act natural, okay?
Natural, huh...

Oi, Commander! You coming or not? What's taking so long?

Mmh!
Sorry... I–

...Stop apologizing over and over again. I'm not some porcelain doll that'll shatter at the slightest touch.
I didn't mean to imply you're fragile. I just remembered that you're not a big fan of physical contact.

I know how to read the room, okay? It's kind of unavoidable with how crowded this place is... Besides, you wouldn't act this courteous with Phaetusa, would you?
I think I still would. But Phaetusa's...

Hmph. I bet she'd actually be delighted if you brushed shoulders with her... Geez, why am I even thinking about this right now...
Look, I'm fine with having a bit of small talk with you... but we should focus on the task right now.

What are they fighting over?
Looks like some kind of canned good... Let me grab one first.
Hey, that customer over there, you gonna buy it or not? Those sandshrub cans sell like hotcakes, and I don't even have enough for everyone who wants them. Hurry up and put it back if you're not going to buy it! Don't get in my way when I'm trying to make money...
Oh, my bad. Here you go.
I suppose your supply problem is not caused by logistics.
Of course not. It's because of the ingredient.
See this sandshrub? Highly nutritious with tons of plant protein, but it's really hard to grow.
Only a few Yellow Zone greenhouses and some Green Zone facilities can supply it. Naturally, that's nowhere near enough to meet the demand.
Phae–I mean, Sweeper, check the cultivation environment of this sandshrub for me please.

Sure... Hold on a sec...

How does this database thing work again...?
It's fine, take your time. I'm not in a hurry either.

Root directory... No... Tsk, Phaetusa's usually the one handling all this stuff...
She was pretty clumsy at first too. She made a lot of mistakes, but eventually she got the hang of it.

Hmph... Spare me your pep talk.

Got it.

According to the data, sandshrub cultivation is very rigorous and demanding, but growing it at the thermal plant's experimental farm isn't beyond the realm of possibility. Current farming environment would need lots of improvements, though... Let me check...
Don't worry. No need to reach a conclusion yet. We still have lots of things to look at. Just note this one down for now so we can hold a meeting and analyze them all later.

Oh... Okay... Logging it under...
I remember Phaetusa has a special folder called "24/7 Post-Apocalypse Wasteland Farming Plan." Try looking for that.

...What kind of name is that? Ah, found it.

Log... ging...

It's none of my business, but... what exactly is going on between you and her?
Her? You mean Phaetusa?

You know she's a fanatical human-lover, especially toward you... That document you had me open... had lots of extremely detailed comments.

She's been venting to me about you constantly these days. While I agree you've got all sorts of problems, lots of those accusations were clearly not real...
Ah...

I know something happened between you two... A misunderstanding or whatever that I'm not aware of.

Even though watching you two bicker back and forth really gets on my nerves... I don't like how awkward things have gotten between you two now.
...And that's bothering you?

I guess, but what I really dislike is seeing her look so lifeless... She's always liked you and relies on you. If there's any misunderstanding, you should talk it out with her.

I know you're not malicious, just slow at times. I'm sure she will forgive you if you apologize earnestly.

...What's that reaction? Have I got something on my face?
No, I'm just a little surprised... Since you've always hated humans and didn't really fancy me either, I thought you'd be happy to have gained a "kindred spirit" in her.

What's that supposed to mean... Y-you know... I just say things in the heat of the moment at times...
And a lot of that sounded like fair criticism to me... Like how you just said that I'm slow–I must admit, I can be a little dense at times.

T-that's because you're always focused on missions and work and have making everyone's life better as a priority.
...But I can totally be as hypocritical as you said. If Groza's carefully prepared nutritious meals taste bad, I throw them away in secret.
...Don't tell her that, please.

Understandable. I wouldn't force myself to eat something that tastes awful either.
And I can also be just as selfish as you said... I overwork Mayling and even steal her rice wine.

But you still pay her for the overtime, and she's a mechanic as well. Drinking less is probably good for her health.
...You can't just put a positive spin on that...

Y-you... I-I... I'll keep looking around the market now! Geez, why are we wasting our time on this?! We won't make it at this rate!
Sweeper...

Aha, Commander! The plan's really making progress, hm~? Nyxie finally revealed her true thoughts~

Looks like she really means the reverse of what she normally says.
...It's indeed a rare sight, but I'd say we should call it quits here.

Why? I thought you wanted her to be more forthcoming?

On any other day, you'd have to jump through so many unnecessary hoops to fish an answer out of her... I say, we keep pushing her a little further, and eventually she'll become much more outspoken! That'll make conversing with her so much easier, don't you think?
That's not how it works... Everyone's got their own way of expressing themselves.
Sometimes being straightforward like you is good, but I don't dislike Sweeper's way either...

...You don't?
Because I know her words were never meant with true ill intent; those things she said about me were real flaws.
She's standing up for me now because she wants to comfort me, as I just had a falling out with you. Sometimes I overlook a lot of important things with how busy I get, so having someone like her to remind me of those things is actually pretty handy... Besides, it's not like I don't know what kind of person I am.

...

So... Nyxie's better? Being like Nyxie is actually better for you?
...That's not really the point, is it? What I'm trying to say is maybe the plan should–

–Do you like Nyxie more than me?
No! Ehm... Hold on, where did you get that from?
What I meant is we shouldn't keep pushing Sweeper–

–So your "falling out" was just an act?

Oh hey, Commander~ You got time? Nyxie and I found a quiz with some rather interesting questions in it. Look! It's in this forum! It's a "personality compatibility quiz" or something... Basically, we can use it to see how well we go together~ What do you think? Interested? Nyxie and I both want to know your answers.
Wonderful! I will tell Nyxie to get her questions ready. See you later~Heartbeat Answer - I

Here you are, Commander! We’ve waited for you for so long! Nyxie was going to fetch you herself had you arrived any later!

I never said that. Since you’re here now, I’ll take my leave then.
Hm? Leaving already? I remember Phaetusa said you also got some questions for me.

Exactly. It’s not every day we get to learn more about a human like the Commander. Don’t you think it’d be a shame to pass on this opportunity, Nyxie?

…Fine. I’ll have a listen. Go on, Phaetusa, don’t mind my presence.

Alright then! Let me check the list of questions… Okay! Ahem! Commander, please answer the following questions!

What are your thoughts on superficial ceremonies? Do you think a sense of ritual is crucial to romance?
Sense of ritual, huh… You mean things like preparing flowers, gifts, or surprises for those special days in a relationship?

Hehe, basically that! If you ask me, I would say that they’re pretty important!

I want to make chocolates for you myself on Valentine’s Day, and also I want to exchange gifts under the tree on Christmas…

There are just so many “romantic activities” I want to experience with you! What about you, Nyxie? What do you think?

They’re nothing but schemes created by opportunistic humans to profit from you. I see no need for their existence.

…But I still think it’ll be fun to do those things with the Commander. What are your thoughts, Commander?
Actually, I agree with Nyxie on this one: I’m opposed to the idea that a sense of ritual is required in romance.

Even you think so…? I thought you’d be on my side! Does that mean you do not want to do those romantic things with me?
That’s not what I meant. I disapprove of the notion of ritualistic formality, but not what they represent.
Let’s put it this way… instead of the customs, I care more about the intentions behind them and the efforts put into them.

Hmm? What does that mean? You are making me confused…
For example, if you want to make some chocolates for me, do you HAVE to wait for a “special occasion” to do so?

Of course not. If I’ve made up my mind to “make chocolates for you”, I would immediately rush to Zucchero and ask Springfield for help.
See? The intention to express your affection has nothing to do with when or how you’re going to do it. It’s an act born purely from wanting to give back to those you love.
Again with the chocolate example: even if your chocolates taste terrible or a little too sweet, I would still gobble them up… because it’s full of your heart and love. I value that more than any formalities.

What a pragmatic human. Remember those words, Phaetusa. Don’t forget to add triple sugar in his chocolate next time.

Haha, the Commander was just giving and example~ But I think I got what you meant now.

The expression of affection does not need to conform to any arbitrary dates or rules.

But I still want to do those special things on those special days… Is that fine with you, Commander?
Of course it is. I will look forward to your surprises then.

Hehe, just you wait. That concludes the first question, let’s move on to the next one~
Heartbeat Answer - II
Phaetusa, I’m back for that compatibility quiz… Hmm? Is Nyxie in control of the body now?

…Pretty sharp for a human. I did not speak or move—how could you tell?
Just a feeling, I guess. After spending so much time with you both, I can sense the minute differences when you two switch.
Speaking of, where’s Phaetusa? The quiz was her idea, why is she hiding herself now?

She’s hesitant to ask you the next question herself, and wanted me to… Stop grinning. I’m just helping her out; it’s not spoiling her.

Back to the subject matter. The question she picked was: Anything the couple is dissatisfied with each other?
Dissatisfied, huh… let’s ignore me or Phaetusa for now. Is there anything YOU are dissatisfied with me?

Many. You want me to be honest?
Yes. I want to know your real thoughts, so that I can rectify the things that displease you.

…Then I have nothing to say. Phaetusa, your turn now.
Did I say something wrong? Why did Nyxie suddenly switch out?

Well, maybe you should ask Nyxie yourself when you get the chance~

Let’s get back on track, Commander. Is there anything you are dissatisfied with me?
Nothing at all. Whether it’s you or Nyxie, I have nothing to complain about. You are both excellent Dolls, and more importantly, perfect partners.

Hearing you say those words makes me very happy. While Nyxie didn’t say anything, I believe she must feel the same.
My turn to ask the question now. Phaetusa, are you dissatisfied with me?
I want you to be honest, so I can be more mindful in the future.

No, no. You are just as perfect as I imagined. How could I have any complaints?

But if I must… there are things that irk me…

Don’t get me wrong, it’s nothing major, but whenever I see other Dolls cling to you, I can sense a burst of anger within my neural cloud.

I believe the correct technical term for that emotion is “jealousy”, since I want you to be mine alone and spend all your time at my side.

While I can’t make you my possession, my human experiment subject for the rest of your life, I still wish we could share more moments together.

Ah, and that’s also what’s on Nyxie’s mind! I’m helping her getting that out!
…Hmm. Phaetusa, I won’t make a promise that I can’t keep, but I will remember what you just said.

That’s all I need to hear, Commander. I understand your circumstances, so having the thought alone is more than enough for me~

Would you look at that! Now the test says our compatibility is excellent! Great, let’s head onto the remaining questions!
Heartbeat Answer - III

Here’s the next question, Commander: Do you believe in “love at first sight”, or “love forged by time”?

Ah! And before telling me your answer, I believe in love at first sight! I fell in love with you right when our eyes first met!

As for Nyxie… I think she’s more of the “love is nurtured” type, since you two’s relationship slowly improved over time.

Stop answering for me. I do believe in love nurtured by time, but not in the way you put it.

My opinion of this specific individual has changed… but for humans as a whole, my contempt remains the same.

What you’re saying is your view of the Commander has changed a lot?

…Changed slightly. Let’s just say I can tolerate his presence now.

I wouild call that more than “slightly”~ But fine, I’ll stop teasing you. Back to you, Commander. Which side are you on?

You must also be a “love at first sight” believer, right? Just like how we’re destined soulmates of each other from the moment we met.

Tell me your love is tempered by time, or are you as naive as Phaetusa?
Uhh… this is definitely a tricky question to respond to. Can I choose not to answer?

No! This is coming from both me and Nyxie! We demand an answer!
Fine. If I must come up with something, it would be that there is no single answer, I agree with you both.
In other words, I believe in both kinds of love. After all, don’t your distinct experiences prove that love can indeed exist in either of the two ways?

Hehe, I guess that’s it for the question then. We’ll stop messing with you now… Also, that whole thing was Nyxie’s idea~

Pathetic. These questions scare you more than actual bloodshed.
They do… I fear the wrong answer would make you two fight.

Well, we did go a bit overboard with a question that has no “correct” answer, but honestly? We would’ve accepted anything you said.

My thought of the matter is very simple: If I’m in the “love at first sight” camp, Nyxie can be in the “love over time” camp~
I see. By the way, isn’t this supposed to be a personality quiz? Why’s all the questions about relationships?

Hmm? I thought I told you before. The full name of the quiz is “Personality Compatibility Test—For Couples”.

Its purpose is to test if the relationship can hold up in the long term and if the couple shares the same views on their situation.

I think knowing how we’re going to spend the rest of our days together matters a lot, especially for someone who’s got two minds in one body.

Whatever. I’m just here because of Phaetusa. Since she wants answers, let’s just get it done.
But… fine. Since you said that, let’s answer the last question before I share my thoughts with you.

Okay then, let us wrap up this Personality Compatibility Test For Couples

The last and most important question… Be sure to think carefully before answering, Commander!
Heartbeat Answer - VI

Ahem. Here we are now, final question. Commander, what is love, for you personally?
That… that is quite the question to give an answer to. What about you, Phaetusa?

I love humans. At my core, I prioritize humans’ benefits and act upon that instinct, but I know that emotion—or admiration, to be more accurate—is not love.

Yet when I compare you to others, I can’t help but gravitate toward you. So to me, love is a special kind of obsession.
Oh? Impressive answer, as expected of Phaetusa. I would say that’s as perfect of a response one could hope for.

I’ve been pondering this very question throughout my time with you after all. Do you have anything to share, Nyxie?

Leave me out of this. Love is a human folly, not us Doll’s concern.

Hmm? But the feeling you’re harboring toward the Commander seems like love to me…

That’s just your opinion. The Commander is special among the humans, but that’s about the extent of it.

My so-called “concern” toward him is nothing but a by-product of Phaetusa’s emotions.

Is that so? Can you swear on your neural cloud that you feel nothing for the Commander?

…Even if I do, so what?

Hehe, then that must be a sign of budding love~ And you just don’t know how to express it properly because you lack experience interacting with humans.

Spare me your nonsense. You’re biased because you’re obsessed with humans.

As for what this feeling is… I’ll figure it out with more time spent with the Commander.

You’re not wrong, Nyxie, it’ll just take some time before you can understand the meaning of your own emotions.

Alright, now that we’ve shared our thoughts, it’s your turn, Commander.
I think love is something intricate but also very simple. It’s untouchable, invisible, yet its effect is very much tangible.

…You’re trying to say the result of this quiz is meaningless, right?

What are you getting at, Nyxie? Haven’t we had a really fun time going through this quiz together?
Answering the quiz was fun indeed. But to me, love is not something that can be expressed by words alone, nor should it be quantified using numbers.
Just like the thoughts I didn’t have time to elaborate on, I believe the process of going through the quiz together was more significant than any result could ever be.
Through our conversation, all three of us deepened our understanding of each other and affirmed our feelings.
As for the “compatibility result”… I think we just proved we don’t need those numbers to show our mutual affections.

Human tests are useless anyway. You happy now, Phaetusa?

Since Nyxie said so, I’ll go with what the Commander said too. Oh, by the way, this quiz is only part one—there are three parts in total.

There are questions like views on first kiss, where to make vows… Heehe, so many we have yet to ask~

But… none of that matters to me anymore.

The commander IS my match~ As long as I can stay by your side, nothing else matters.

Please take care of us for the rest of our days onboard Elmo. Let the three of us get along together~

About Sweeper
You seem to like Sweeper a lot.

We've been each other's partner since a long time ago after all.
I rescued her from the ruins, and she agreed to share this body with me.
I guess you could consider us having a sort of symbiotic relationship.About Hobbies
Other than keeping a diary, do you have any other hobbies?

Hobbies? I love humanity, so collecting human-related items is another hobby of mine~
Human-related... items?

Things like preserved eyeballs, ear specimens... Huh? What's that look on your face, Commander?
About Sweeper's hobbies
So... I wonder what are Sweeper's hobbies, since she seldom shows herself.

Hmph... carefully observe, precisely analyse, and systematically construct my strategic blueprint...
Everything I do is profound. I don't expect you humans to understand.
But... if you wish to learn more... I don't mind giving you some surface-level explanations...About Wandering
During your wandering days, was there anything that left an impression?

A lot of things did. If we're really diving into this, I could go on for days~
But if I have to summarise, it would be—I witnessed man's struggle in face of suffering, man's joy before their loved ones, and man's hypocrisy when interests are involved...
There's the good, and there's the bad—that's what makes me love humanity even more. Humans are truly fascinating.About dreams
So, is there something Sweeper wants to do?

Me? Hmph, is that even a question? Revive Sangvis Ferri, of course— Relax, I'm joking. I already know that's impossible.
...I think it'll be great to meet Master Elisa once more.
Why did she abandon us? What are the secrets she's keeping to herself? I have so many questions for her...About fear

I really can't stand Phaetusa at times...
What happened? Did you two fight?

That crazy human-lover won't stop whispering in my ear about humans... Her survival instinct is so nonexistent she'd be helping count the cash for the humans selling her off.
Ahem... Of course that doesn't include you. Y-you're a... a human I'm okay with.
