In between wars, the union started researching anti armour weapons, but progressed very slowly. After the war was declared they renamed the prototype as PTRD-41 and order me to be in service right away. Trivia
- On 1950s, several captured PTRD had replaced its barrel with M2 Heavy Barrel conducted by Army Ordnance Officer, Cpt. William Brophy. Later, the results proved the replaced barrel has significant improvement of the maximum effective range; the M2 Barrel fitted on PTRD proved effective to 1828m, or 2000 yards over the standard PTRD barrel.[3]
- During the war, Soviet Armored attempt to use PTRD as Anti-Aircraft weapon against bomber, although the effectiveness itself was questionable among historian and most of the capability only come from Soviet propagandist.[4]
- It's impossible to shoot down medium and heavy bomber at their altitude, however it is assumed if the propagandists refer the bomber as Ju 87 'Stuka' Dive Bomber due their nature of slow speed and possibility to shot down its engine or flight control surface although it is dangerous to face Stuka without heavy cover or in dive bombing position. Fyodor Modzhenok, from the 75th Guard Rifle Division claimed to shot down a Junkers bomber, reported the usage of PTRD as Anti-Aircraft Rifle by putting a wagon cart wheel to chopped tree as an anti-aircraft turret were popular.[5]
- Aside of Propagandists claim, the 14.7mm which PTRD used later became a primary ammunition for Soviet ZPU.
- Further experiment of PTRD was conducted by attaching a scope which involved famous Soviet Sniper, Vasily Zaitsev. However, due its harsh recoil produced, the scope mount wasn't strong enough to grip PTRD receiver, and it'll easily dislocate the scope mount. During Korean War kickoff, U.S Army conducted a same experiment as Soviet does, by attaching Lyman Alaskan Scope on it.[6]
