Trivia[edit]
- The name is a reference to AAC's .300 AAC Blackout cartridge. This cartridge was designed for use in M4 carbines and other AR-15 platform rifles. The SAAMI designation for this cartridge is .300 BLK and .300 AAC Blackout.
- In real life, the cartridge was developed to fulfill a need of Special Forces soldiers for ammunition with better performance than a standard high-energy high-velocity round (like the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge), and superior subsonic performance when compared to a standard 9x19mm round. More specifically, it was meant to have terminal ballistics similar to the Russian 7.62x39mm round. The .300 Blackout ended up with cartridge dimensions of around 7.62x35mm.[1]
- One of the requirements for the cartridge was a high degree of interchangeablity with a standard 5.56mm M4/AR-15 and the ability to be used in a STANAG magazine with no reductions in maximum ammunition count (i.e. being capable of inserting 30 rounds of .300 BLK in a 5.56mm 30-round magazine). This was accomplished successfully, with the only obligatory change to convert a firearm from 5.56 to .300 BLK being a barrel swap. No changes to the fire control group or bolt are required.[1]
- Supersonic loads for the .300 AAC Blackout do exist, although when making use of them the suppressor will have its effects diminished, as the supersonic projectile will break the speed of sound and produce a supersonic "crack" that cannot be completely suppressed. For that reason, subsonic loads are used to keep the sound signature as low as possible.[1]
