The first weapon to introduce the concept of intermediate rifle cartridge and assault rifle into small arms infantry fighting doctrines. The StG44 (abbreviation of Sturmgewehr 1944, "assault rifle 1944") is a German selective-fire rifle developed towards the late stage of World War II. The Wehrmacht divisions that entered the invaded regions of Soviet Union during Case Blue were pushed back by the Red Army by late 1942, more and more infantries in Soviet rifle companies were issued PPSh submachine guns, while the trained guard troops were issued semi-automatic SVT-38 rifles, whereas the majority of the Wehrmacht divisions still replied on the bolt action Kar98k. Facing the overwhelming level of automatic firepower difference, Nazi forces leadership urged development of new arms and warfare doctrines. Due to the political atmosphere at 1943, early StG44 models were released under the designations MP43 and MP44 (Maschinenpistole 1943, 1944 respectively), after recognising the weapon performance and the new fighting doctrine's success in Eastern front of 1944, the rifle received minor improvements and was redesignated under StG44.

The StG44 was designed to chamber a new shorter cartridge, the Kurzpatrone 43 (Short Cartridge 1943), a 7.92mm calibre bullet derived from the 7.92×57mm full cartridge used by the Mauser rifles. A few selected units were chosen to test StG44 at first, the fully automatic firing weapon had more range than the MP40 SMGs chambered in 9mm Luger pistol cartridge, while being able to fulfil the automatic fire suppression role of a machine gun. By replacing the bolt action Mauser K98k rifles with StG44, the units were able to move quicker in the combat zone while being more lethal, the success of the rifle prompted further productions, StG44 were widely given to upper hierarchical units of Wehrmacht such as the Panzergrenadier (Mobile Infantry), the Fallschirmjäger (Paratrooper) and most importantly the Waffen-SS.

The Sturmgewehr 44 (commonly known as StG44) is a gas-operated automatic rifle made by Nazi Germany, and considered the first mass-produced assault rifle in history (an assault rifle is a select-fire infantry weapon that uses intermediate rifle cartridges). It is chambered for the 7.92x33mm Kurz cartridge, a shorter version of the the 7.92×57mm Mauser rifle cartridge. It has a magazine capacity of 30 rounds and is relatively heavy, weighing around 5kg loaded. It also has a fairly slow rate of fire of about 500 rounds per minute, which made the gun controllable in full-auto. It had a cross bolt switch for fully automatic and semi-automatic modes.

The rifle's automatic action is actuated by gas, which pushes back a long-stroke piston rod, fed by a 30-round curved magazine, StG44 can sustain 500 rounds per minute of automatic fire rate. StG44 itself is a relatively heavy rifle weighing around 5kg loaded, while firing the low powered cartridge and having a fairly low rate of fire, the rifle is relatively controllable when fired in full auto. StG44 also comes with selective fire function, which enables the more precision based semi-automatic firing similar to the conventional battle rifles all the soldiers (at the time) were familiar with.
The StG44 was developed in the latter years of World War II as a response to the overwhelming firepower of the PPSh-41 submachine guns and SVT-40 semi-automatic rifles fielded by the Soviet Red Army. The StG has a longer range than the MP40 submachine gun, while being more effective in close combat than the bolt-action Kar98K. By supplementing the Kar98K and MP40, soldiers were able to function better in many battlefield situations. It was also capable of suppresive fire, thus lessning the burden on MG34 and MG42 machinegunners.

However the introduction of the new generation of weapons and infantry fighting doctrines were to late to have an effect on the war itself, by 1944 it was clear the defeat of the Nazi regime was imminent. stockpiles of StG44 rifles recovered after the brutal war had inspired the world of the weapon's concept and fighting doctrine, such was made evident by Kalashnikov's AK rifle and later on Stoner's AR-15 rifle. Despite the defeat of the Nazi regime, a small batch of StG44 were produced post WWII, this batch of produced StG44 and surplus units from the war briefly served the East Germany army as the Iron Curtains of USSR had fallen onto Europe.
After developing the MKb 42 prototype, the finalized design was manufactured in 1943 under the designation MP43, then in 1944 as the MP44 (Maschinenpistole 1943 and 1944). It was named this way to hide the project from Germany's leader Adolf Hitler who did not approve of the concept due to logistical reasons, though he found out later and kept it in production after heeding requests for a new infantry weapon. Hitler had a change of heart after witnessing a demonstration of the MP44 and had the weapon renamed as the "Sturmgewehr 44" (Storm/Assault Rifle 1944) for intimidation purposes.

Her insignia with a winged parachute makes it possible to assume she is a Fallschirmjäger. Several nations use this combination of symbols to distinct their airborne troops. Historically, the German Fallschirmjäger were not solely dropped by plane, but were also used as a kind of elite infantry. Their usage of the StG44 is also well documented, but not typical to see on photos.

Interestingly, her uniform completely lacks any Nazi iconography, replacing it with German flag designs and GK symbols, likely the submitted artwork design of artist 八才 had undergone censorship.

*Her grenade launcher skill was based from real-life Portable Grenade Launcher called "Schiessbecher" or Gewehrgranatengerät which stands for Rifle Grenade Device, which also equipped on K98k Rifle. *StG44's grenade launcher skill in-game is based on the grenade launcher attachment for the StG44, called the "Schiessbecher" or "Gewehrgranatengerät" (shooting cup/rifle grenade device). This device used various 30mm grenade rounds, and was able to be equipped on the Kar98K, StG 44, G98/40, and FG 42. There's also a Japanese copy of the "Schiessbecher", the Type 2, that was used with the Type 99 and Type 38 Arisaka rifles, although the barrel was shorter on the Japanese version.
*The Krummlauf, or curved barrel attachment for StG44, was released during the war. Krummlauf has a sighting device to safely aiming behind the cover. Despite there's many version of the curved barrel angle had been implemented, only the 30° and 45° which entered the service. However, their durability is unreliable; 300 rounds for 30° barrel, and 160 rounds for 45° barrel. In addition, the bent barrel will make the bullet shatter and exit from the curved barrel with spreading fragment, causing shotgun effect and thus worsen the accuracy. Krummlauf was released for Infantry Version(I) and (F) for tank use in order to face off assailant approaching their tank. Krummlauf itself became a mastermind of Corner-shot.
*The "Krummlauf" was an optional attachment for the StG44, featuring a 30° or 45° curved barrel and appropriate sights for firing behind cover. However, their durability is unreliable; 300 rounds for the 30° barrel, and 160 rounds for the 45° barrel. In addition, the device made bullets shatter and fragment while exiting the barrel, worsening the rifle's accuracy. The "Krummlauf" had an infantry version (I) and an (F) variant for tank crew use in close-range fighting. It was a main influence for the modern era Corner-shot device.

**It should be noticed that Syrian Rebels captured the weapon load out containing 5000 unit of StG44. The source of weapon itself is still unclear, but the Soviet Union or Yugoslavia is the possible source as they sold their stock of StG44 to their friendly regime, mainly to communist-backed African Region and Middle-East in Cold War era. It should be noted the Soviet speed up their aid to Syria during Suez Crisis in 1956.

Weapon Background[edit]

StG44 rifles were mainly given to upper hierarchical units of the Wehrmacht such as the Panzergrenadier (Mobile Infantry) and Fallschirmjäger (Paratrooper). It was also widely distributed to various Waffen-SS divisions. The rifles proved especially effective in the Eastern Front.

The introduction of the StG44 and new infantry doctrines were too late to have an effect on the war itself, as by 1944 it was clear the defeat of the Nazi regime was imminent. Stockpiles of StG44 rifles recovered after the war inspired other nations to develop similar arms, a trend made evident by Mikhail Kalashnikov's AK rifle and Eugene Stoner's AR-15 rifle. A small batch of StG44s were produced post-WWII, and together with other surplus guns they briefly served the East German army as the Iron Curtains of the USSR fell across Eastern Europe.[1]

Character Design

Her outfit suggests a strong pride in her country of origin, but her reason for wearing it is almost entirely based on cosmetics — she likes how it looks, and her quotes indicate she works hard to maintain her flashy uniform and gear, so as to always present a professional angle to her fellow T-Dolls.

The doll is dressed in a similar manner to a general of the German Luftwaffe, the air force branch of the German military during World War 2. Her rank as a general is indicated by the golden color of her insignia, aiguillette, buttons, and the braided chinstrap on her peaked cap.[2] Her affiliation to the Luftwaffe can be seen in the dark-blue colors of the whole uniform and her coat, which is inspired by a Luftwaffe general's overcoat with its distinctive openly worn white lapels.[3] It is also not uncommon for the peaked caps of the Luftwaffe to have comparable winged insignia to hers.[4] Visual similarities as a whole could also be drawn to the Allgemeine-SS or the Kriegsmarine, but altogether are much more unlikely when the details are compared.

Her winged parachute insignia makes it possible that she is a Fallschirmjäger, as several nations use this combination of symbols to distinquish their airborne troops. Historically, the German Fallschirmjäger were not solely dropped by plane, but were also used as a kind of elite infantry. Their usage of the StG44 is also well documented, but not typical to see on photos.[5]

Interestingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly), her uniform completely lacks any Nazi iconography, replacing it with German flag designs and GK symbols. It is likely that the submitted design of artist 八才 had undergone censorship.

Trivia

  • StG44's grenade launcher skill in-game is based on the grenade launcher attachment for the StG44, called the "Schiessbecher" or "Gewehrgranatengerät" (shooting cup/rifle grenade device). This device used various 30mm grenade rounds, and was able to be equipped on the Kar98K, StG 44, G98/40, and FG 42. There's also a Japanese copy of the "Schiessbecher", the Type 2, that was used with the Type 99 and Type 38 Arisaka rifles, although the barrel was shorter on the Japanese version.[6]
  • The "Krummlauf" was an optional attachment for the StG44, featuring a 30° or 45° curved barrel and appropriate sights for firing behind cover. It was a main influence for the modern era Corner-shot device.[7]
  • Syrian rebel troops modified the StG44 to be fired remotely by using a connected wired joystick to control the gun and a modified scope with CMOS camera with support of video output components mounted behind the scope.[8]
    • It should be noted that a weapons cache containing 5000 StG44 rifles was captured from Syrian rebels. The source of these weapons is still unclear, but the Soviet Union or Yugoslavia are possible sources as they sold their stock of StG44s to friendly regimes, mainly Communist-backed African regions and the Middle-East during the Cold War era. The Soviets also sent aid to Syria during the Suez Crisis in 1956.[9]
  • Many people cite that the AK-47 was heavily influenced by the StG44, a claim that holds some merit when looking at the long stroke piston system both guns use, the use of an intermediate cartridge, and the fact the Hugo Schmeisser (the designer of the StG44) worked in the Soviet weapons industry after WWII.
    • Unknown to a lot of people, the AR-15/M16 was also influenced by the StG44. Similarities include the spring loaded buttstock, the location of the thumb safety, and the location of the magazine release.[10]
